  • Globalism isn’t a new phenomenon. When French vehicle maker Renault began investing in America’s Mack truck company, the cross breeding began. There is Re-No-Way this 1983 Midliner isn’t a Mack truck.

Besides Volvo this cabmodel was also used by german Magirus-Deutz (Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz, today IVECO), the dutch DAF (Van Doornes Autofabriek) and the french Saviem (today Renault). It was called the "Vierer Club" (Club of four). Renault/Mack is today a division of Volvo Trucks just as White.

The company I was hired by in 1991, ran Mercedes straight trucks. They were stone axe reliable, but miserable to drive. When they bought a few of these Macks, some guys didn’t care for them. I guess they were too different. But man, I took one at any chance I got. They were smooth, quiet, and ran really nice. Not long after that, I moved up to a tractor and trailer, which were all real Macks, just like that R Model you featured the other day. And they really were built like a Mack back then, not so much now.

In 1988 I was working for a city bus company here in Australia, and an order was placed with Renault for new buses. When the first one arrived it was labeled Renault, but polititians decided that because of the French nuclear testing on Moruroa atoll they couldn't use the Renault name so they were badged Mack. We ended up with over 200 of them both rigid and articulated.
