I love how healthy Andy looks at the end. So full of vitality and capacity to receive his travel worn friend. A friend who is at his edges of receiving life. And Andy is there to embrace him like a brother. It's just so epic
Subscribed as soon as I was done watching. No over reaction, no excessive talking, and you weren't constantly bewildered. You actually just...reacted, excellent.
I have the exact exact opposite view, she needs to develop a personality. I'm not clairvoyant, I can't read her mind. Just attentively watching with a poker face don't do much for me. I like those other reactors you dissed, although there are some that aren't attentive enough.

I thought i was subscribed after watching her 12 Angry Men reaction. I had seen that movie but shockingly never saw Shawshank so when i saw Sheila was reacting to it i thought id watch since ts my first time. If i decide i want more ‘reaction” then I’ll watch others. I have my favorite reactors some talk a lot more some over react to the littlest of things, some comment on direction and camera work. Some reactors i have been disappointed under react to some scenes in movies
@20:00mins "i hate those birds." Crows and ravens are some of the smartest birds around. Not only do they make good pets, but in the wild they are "professional garbage- disposals". They are problem solvers and they can recognize people's faces, even years from the last time they see this person. History gave them a bad name. But, we all have fears of feral animals, no matter what kind of animal they are. Mine is dogs. Go figure!
In the yard Red tells Andy, "Mexico is a shitty pipe dream" precisely what Andy crawled through to achieve it. I love that the warden held Andy's bible with the rock hammer inside in his hand and gave it back saying, "Salvation lies within". Later we see that the section Andy hollowed out to hide the hammer begins on page one of The Book of Exodus.
It was such a great period in movie history when we look at how many brilliant movies came out around that time.
Sadly the 2020's have bought mostly rubbish & whilst they blame covid & cost living for the down fall of the cinema experience, the reality is there is nothing being released that makes people want to go to the cinema's regularly.

You don't notice but the camera angles/shots is very well done because Tim Robbins (Andy) is 6'5". You don't see him towering over anyone. The only scene that hints that he's tall is after he polishes the wardens shoes the bars open up and he ducks to walk through with the guard behind him.
That's something I've never thought of before. He's even taller than Clancy Brown (Hadley), and you feel like Hadley has that imposing presence over him anyway.
He towers over the rock n' roll kid like crazy.
Truly enjoyed rewatching this masterpiece with you. Looking forward to more.

This is my GOAT movie. I have yet to see any film that I'd rank higher for me.

Good one, Shiela! This is such a great movie. There are two more really good films adapted from Stephen King stories that you might enjoy as well, The Green Mile and Stand By Me. In fact, the story for Stand By Me comes from the same book as The Shawshank Redemption. If you haven't seen those two you should add them to your someday list Thanks for sharing this one.
I always enjoy watching "The Shawshank Redemption". I've come to appreciate the screenwriting, the performances, and the wonderful score. Thank you for a heartfelt reaction.
There is a film, "Gattaca" (1997), which you might enjoy. On its face it appears to be a science fiction story but it's actually a story with a universal message.
I really appreciated your comments about films....on what they can be, and how they can be made. I am 76 years old, and one of the "losses" I experience now, compared to "the good old days", is thoughtful film making, with the attributes you mentioned.....

I was gonna say you are a very tough cookie as you didn't seem to get emotional with Brook's death scene but at the end you did, which was so nice to see. Don't worry about ahowing your emotions while reacting to certain movies, it's normal and many of us who even have watched those movies many times cry on certain scenes every time we watch. As long as the reaction is honest n real it's well appreciated by your viewers. Certain reactors, knowing that viewers like certain things tend to exaggerate showing the emotions and that ruins it for the viewers tbh. You are doing fantastic and i'm sure you will become many viewers favorite for your sincere, not talking too much n such, reactions.
The Green Mile is another masterpiece, the people behind it, Stephen King n Frank Darabont, are the same ones behind the Green Mile. Two other favorites of mine is The Last Samurai n Interstellar, wonderful movies

Good reaction. I like that you don't talk endlessly over the movie dialog like some others do. And I also wonder where the really good story tellers are these days. I'd like to suggest three movies to check out - "Pulp Fiction", "Fight Club" and "The Sixth Sense". There are lots more great movies, but these three are fantastic.

I don't think Andy was planning his escape 'all along'. He had Red get him the rock hammer for his hobby just like he said. Then one of the first things he did with it was carve something in his wall. That's when he ACCIDENTALLY discovered his wall was rotten and soft. THEN he began to hatch his plan. He wasn't even working for the warden yet. He asked Red to get him his first poster THEN got attacked by Boggs and the sisters for the last time. After that, things began to fall into place. The one thing about his plan that I think held the MOST risk is believing he'd be able to break into the sewer pipe with a rock. I'm sure he could see signs of degradation but still, making a hole big enough to get inside? He bet EVERYTHING on it.
1994 was arguably one of the best years for films in a long long time far back as I can remember. Shawshank Redemption, Pulp Fiction, Dumb and Dumber, The Mask , Natural Born Killers, Speed, Ace Ventura and True Lies just to name some. However, Shawshank was Best Picture worthy and was nominated but nothing stopped 'Forrest Gump' that year.

"Like" is not the word. A lot of sad things happen, in this movie, but I would have to say about the _saddest_ is what happened to Brooks.
When he was first sentenced, in 1905, he was 22. As one of the few prison inmates with a college degree, he quickly managed to maneuver his way into the position of prison librarian. That's the role he's played ever since.
But it's now 1955. It's been 50 years. Outside, there's been two world wars and the Great Depression. The first radio transmission has happened. The first TV transmission has happened. Before he was locked up, as he explained in the narration, he had seen _one_ single car, and when he was released, they were _everywhere._
What roads were paved in 1905 were paved with cobblestones, but most of the roads across the US were still dirt. When he was released, there was an interstate highway system and most roads were paved with asphalt because the cars in existence traveled a lot _faster_ than the one he had seen before he was locked up.
The world from which he was taken is _gone._ Now he probably could've adjusted to all this if he had still had his _youth,_ but he's in his 70's, now. He's at an age that, nowadays, one is granted Social Security benefits and moved into some kind of retirement accommodations because the general consensus is that one is well past one's prime working years.
So something has gone _seriously_ wrong when they set him up with a re-acclimation program that has him living in a _halfway_ house and bagging _groceries._

Hey, now. No fair skipping ahead.
39:21 Now, here, I want to call attention to a key detail that, at first, seems kind of surprising. See, Andy has to have been working on this hole for _years._
Now it's no surprise Warden Norton knew nothing about it. Norton is the main guy Andy had to _hide_ it from.
It's also no surprise that Captain _Hadley_ knew nothing about it. He and Warden Norton are operating an _enterprise,_ together. If Hadley had found out, _Norton_ would've found out.
The surprise lies in the fact that Red didn't know, _either._ Years and years and years of digging this hole and Andy told _no_ one about it, because of a well established fact. As the old saying goes, three people can keep a secret if two of them are dead.
The more people who know a secret, the harder it is to keep. If you want to keep a secret, _keep_ the _secret._ Andy stood to gain absolutely _nothing_ from Red knowing, so Red didn't know.

They kept him in because he was laundering corrupt money for the warden. If he got out not only would it stop but the warden be at risk
For Westerns, with your film background in mind, suggest you include some from the golden age of westerns (1930s-1960s). There are many from this era. In no specific order: The Searchers (1956), The Magnificent Seven (1960), The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962), High Noon (1952). Others have recommended Westerns after 1965, when the Western genre changed. Nothing wrong with them, I enjoy many of them myself. You'll be able to see how the Western genre changed.
This is a great story but it's Morgan Freeman's narration that makes it a classic. I think Stephen King said he thinks the movie is better than the book simply because of Morgan Freeman. You have a subtle reacting style but I like it.. I can tell you're really taking things in so it has more impact when you have something to say.
Some recommendations.. The Fugitive (1993), The Pelican Brief (1993), My Cousin Vinny (1992)
In the Steven King short story Red's crime is disclosed. It was withheld in the movie to make his character more likeable. Red is a triple life'er. Red took out huge life insurance policy on his older wife, and rigged the brakes on her car to fail. Red didn't count on his wife picking up her friend and baby daughter that day, and the resulting crash killed all three. BTW, Red in the book is a short, stocky, balding white guy with red hair. And he's Irish. There are numerous detail differences between the movie and the book, and it's one of those rare cases where the movie is better. The book is Red's recollection of Andy, and his story doesn't come out in chronological order like it does in the movie. Andy's motivations in the book are different, and they don't have the satisfactions that the movie brings.
I aways liked seeing Golden Age actors like James Whitmore late in their careers in (then) current movies. A couple others were Sylvia Sidney in "Beetlejuice," Burt Lancaster in "Field of Dreams," Mickey Rooney in "Night at the Museum," etc.
I really enjoyed watching you watch this fantastic movie, top 5 my all time favorites, my favorite part was when you finally released Andy was indeed innocent and you looked straight at us. Definitely priceless moment, I’ll be checking out the rest of your reactions, I hope you do The Sixth Sense

You mentioned at the beginning that it is like O.J. Simpson. Nicole Brown and Ron Goldman we’re not lovers. They were friends so it is not like the O.J. Simpson case as Ron had the misfortune of arriving at a murder in progress.

An excellent wrongful imprisonment film is *In The Name of the Father* (1993) with Daniel Day-Lewis and Emma Thompson. Based on a true story. Nominated for 7 Academy Awards- Best Picture, Director, Adapted Screenplay, Actor, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress and Editing.
3:44 So a key plot point begins in _this_ scene. Andy is assessing Warden Norton and Captain Hadley and reaching the conclusion, "These fellows do _not_ have my best interests at heart."

You know the most incredible part of this story? At its heart does _not_ lie a story of romance, but a story about _friendship._ At this point in his life, Andy probably doesn't have _any_ better friends than Red and Red probably doesn't have any better friends than _Andy._ And when I see the friendship that exists between them, I see the kind of friendship I think we should _all_ be so lucky as to have, one day.

Just to clarify, number 4 should be "Unforgiven" which is Clint Eastwood's 1992 masterpiece (he both directed and starred in the film). It won four Oscars including Best Picture and Best Director. Also I would add "True Grit" (the 1969 original with John Wayne, who won an Oscar for his performance, not the 2010 remake).
Give Casablanca a try. It is as good as this one with more fun but a deep meaning.
