moloch49, No need to take umbrage, it was just a passing comment that in the 1940's many family's lives were devastated by the war. In other terms I agree with you, in many respects society was much better in the 1940's and indeed the 1950's when the war was over. This a great lyric from a gentler age, and an excellent foxtrot. The joy of this music is that every syllable can be heard

My son [28 months] and I are listening to this after watching "Memphis Belle", he starts to dance and tries to sing along. When he sings "gypsy violins" it's magic. As for class and the country, it starts at home.......... It's a choice to raise our children with it. Some sadly choose not too.

Clarinet playing the lead melody with a tenor sax playing the same melodic line an octave lower and harmony filled in by the rest of the saxes. NO band has ever played it to get the same sound that the original Miller band did. The sound is unmistaken and for all time belongs to Glenn Miller.

Just Beautiful. Wolfsky9
I can't believe it! I've been looking for this song since I heard a part of it in the film Memphis Belle. It's marvelous! I've passed hours in the net, in the last months, trying to find about it and I hadn't found anything, now I just suddenly find it! It's a beautiful song!
@@Rogue.Warrior No, I haven't seen the real Memphis Belle, but in 1999, when I was 11 years old, my dad, brothers and I went to the Museum of Flight in Seattle and met Captain Robert Morgan, the man who flew the Memphis Belle during WW2. It was quite an experience and we have an autographed photo of him with his crew that was taken after their last mission, as well as photos we took of him with us. That plane was immaculate! It was renovated to what it would have been as it rolled out of the Boeing plant in February, 1943! And, that very plane is the one in the dance scene in the movie! You know, where the tail gunner sings "Danny Boy." Lastly, on June 24, 2017, I flew in both the B-17, "909", and the B-24, "Witchcraft," of the Collings Foundation. The voice of Pat Friday who dubbed for Lynn Bari, gave this vocal a poignacy no one will ever do better. This is a perfect example of why GM & His Orchestra were so far ahead of everyone else. This is an unbelievably sophisticated melody, with so many chord/ rhythm changes, it boggles the mind. Harry Warren & Mack Gordon out did themselves with this masterpiece-- We'll not see or hear music like this, ever again. Wolfsky9
The opening number from Glenn's first feature film, "Sun Valley Serenade" (1941), incorporating his theme, "Moonlight Serenade", just before the segue into "I Know Why", written by Mack Gordon & Harry Warren. Pat Friday is actually singing for Lynn Bari...backing her are Miller's vocal group, "The Modernaires". Gordon "Tex" Beneke plays the sax solo in the middle...Milton Berle, playing Glenn's agent, is "comedy relief" during the film.
It's important to mention the composer of "I Know Why": Mr. Harry Warren. He wrote so many hit songs for Glenn Miller, show numbers like "Chattanooga Choo-Choo" & "I've Got A Gal In Kalamazoo", the timeless ballads "At Last" & "Serenade In Blue", etc. etc. all for the two musical comedies "Sun Valley Serenade" & "Orchestra Wives" ... pure genius!

when I listen to this I think maybe, just maybe I was born out of my time lol
@BegunCupid I know exactly what you mean!
Wow, this is in stereo - all my GM records are mono. Now I gotta go find them in stereo!
the real Glenn Miller and his band!!!
John Payne on piano.
This when there was real music and musicians
Always makes me cry!... So beautiful !
This reminds me of my early childhood years. It's strange that the older you get, the more you want to go back to those days.
Inigualable, no vuelve a existir una orquesta así. Excelentes músicos la integraban,
@Audacissimus I'm 68 and it gives me goosebumps to hear you say that. I was born 3 years before Glen Miller died but grew up through late childhood with his music and, of course, other great band leaders of the time.
Greatest generation that every lived despite war going on in Europe and in the Pacific.....Wish they were with us today...They had a lot to share.....They saw the best and worst of mankind......
not enough people my age "23" enjoy this music
Glen Miller --just the mention of his name brings goosebumps.
This is a fabulous song.
musica para apaciguar el espiritu, no pasara nunca de moda, ya no hay mas genios musicales con Glen, todo un clasico..
Very classy.
