    Ataturk is a hero to the Turkish people, because he led the defence of the homeland against the invasion at Gallipoli. He helped prevent his country from being divided up by the victorious allies and became the first President of modern Turkey.

      We were reading about some of his policies, and it seems he did the country a big favor by secularizing it as well. Thank you for further context, it is always appreciated 😊

    I have lived in Ankara for over 20 years. Other than Ankara, I lived in Antalya for 3-4 years as well and currently I am calling Istanbul home. Ankara is a very unique place. There are not many tourists and usually people outside of Ankara find it rather boring. I have never found Ankara boring while living there. It is a rather well constructed and designed city with lots of museums and as you have stated, it is huge. So, finding things that you are looking for is rather easy there. If you are interested in table top rpg games, or theaters there are always new events happening. Infrastructure was also pretty good with nice healthcare and good internet connection. Houses are pretty big and comfortable and public transportation is nice. There is no earthquake risk as well. So, it is a stable, nice city in my opinion. There are also some lakes and nice, big parks. I miss my apartment there for sure. Also Ankara is considerably cheaper when you compare it with Istanbul and it is located in the middle of the Turkey. While living there, I have traveled a lot because it was very convenient. You can just go to south, west, east, north and see all parts of Turkey just with a 2-3 hours flight. Also what you guys were eating is a very old dessert called ottoman paste. It is usually sold at events or touristic places. It is pretty much sugar with fruit flavoring.

      @@OnePackWanderers i think it's winding down, as summer is coming to the end, we decided to skip the ultra touristy balloon ride as in my opinion was extremely expensive and not worth it. We decided to rent a car insted very cheap for 2 days and explored some amazing places away from the crowds. We did experience the sunrise in different locations it was amazing.

    For whatever flaws Ataturk had, one thing he got right was to insist Turkey to be a secular country, sort of like Separation of Church and State in the U.S. But similar to what's going on in the U.S. with pushing religion into the country, Erdogan wants Turkey to be a Islamic country.

    • @OnePackWanderers
      @OnePackWanderers  2 года назад +2

      Ankara is very clean from what we’ve seen. The infrastructure is nice too, we noticed a lot of metro points but we never used them. Nice streets and sidewalks.
      Istanbul I would say was a bit dirtier, but also it is a much bigger city and it’s very old so roads and stuff are a struggle when the city has been around much longer than cars have existed!

    Istanbul is a vibrant metropolitan city that boasts a diverse population from all over the world. However, Ankara offers a more authentic experience of Turkish daily life and culture. In my opinion, Ankara serves as a gateway for foreigners to truly understand and appreciate the essence of Turkey.
