    we´ve mostly done prompts in english class in high school. I always struggled a bit with getting going, and maybe it was because of the added difficulty of it being foreign language, but I remember several times having to read my work to the class and being decided as the "best". Once my teacher wrote on the bottom that he loves my writing style and I should never stop writing and I think about that every time writing gets hard

    Prompts are an excellent tool to not only strengthen writing skills, but to also stretch and broaden one's imagination and to branch out of one's comfort zone.
    Over the course of my writing career, I've written thousands of prompt practices. Looking back and rereading them is like viewing a snapshot of my skill level and comfort zone during that particular time in my life and authorship journey.
    While I've been mostly out of the game for a few years now, focusing my energy on my toddler and moving to a different state, I've recently begun feeling the itch to get back into daily prompts. They'd be an excellent, obligation-free way to rehone some skills that may be dulling due to lack of regular writing sessions.

    I do a daily writing prompt, and I am part of a writing prompt group that meets on Sundays. I tend to use magazine articles as sources for the daily prompts. It is a way to get me to read more magazines (The Economist, Cosmopolitan, New Scientist, etc.) rather than just reading short stories, comic books and novels. For the Sunday Writing Group, each member of the group supplies a prompt and we combine the prompts to write our own stories. Because the prompts tend not to be connected thematically (since they are chosen in the moment by each member), it makes the writing exercise challenging. We try to make the prompts work together logically and cohesively in the narratives we write. I am trying to use prompts as not just warm up exercises for writing, but to continue WIPs. Thanks a lot for sharing how you are using prompts, Kate. 🙂

    I love how we both used our dice for the prompts. I need more reasons to use my dice especially that d100 since I don't usually need it in game. My DM does ask us questions at the start of each session from a list of 100 questions (they are questions about your character, but it is so fun and such a neat way to get to know the party). That's about the only time I use it lol. I've also used the dice in the past to make decisions in my manuscript and for my D&D story, I set up actual combat scenarios and rolled dice for my chararcter's characters (so yes I made character sheets for my character's characters).

    To answer the actual question though I use prompts all the time! Mostly for fan fiction but my friends and I would also pick prompt lists to write brief pieces of fiction that we’d read at our monthly girls nights! It captured the feeling of writing stories and swapping them in high school and I loved it

    i LOVE prompts like the one that was given to you. i like having other people give me random words, or pulling some off a generator. it's a fun game of how quickly can i get these in while still making sense, and it gets me writing more than i realize!

    • @KateCavanaugh
      @KateCavanaugh  Год назад +1

      Yessss! It's so funny, because when I think of writing prompts I don't often think of the "use x, y, and z, GO," but they've been some of my favorites I've ever done! There's so much flexibility and creativity in seeing what you come up with.
      Actually I'd love to try that as a challenge and see just how short I can make it while still making sense! You've inspired me bahah.

    So much fun to find a new Vlog!!! I still wake up at 5:30 but it's the Shelties asking for breakfast. When Darby was alive, I got up at that hour. But now, the shelties and Winnie are happy to go back to bed for a couple of hours. And that works for me too! Sorry I missed the Patreon streams. The one day I ran errands outside the house!!! (so I didn't see your email until the next day after the streams were finished, lol. ) Have a great day! Hugs and love!

    I am so excited to hear your thoughts on the Artist’s Way. I read it/attempted to go through it for the first time when I was 18-19, and while I think there’s a lot I don’t love, I also know doing the pages and the artist dates does help me when I’m in a rut, and when I was 18 and hurting, it was really helpful.

    All writers do different things at different stages of the writing process, so just do it when you feel up to it, Zero -draft is always garbage but we need it to get started to find the story in later drafts etc... Some days are very productive and others much slower, it's all part of the game to get a story done. There is variation in everything connected to writing, the time we work, the modes we juggle, never ending variation., that is the key term here. The hardest part is organizing all the ideas and scenes that takes forever in many ways.

    I used to get up SO early, but now my youngest wakes even earlier and if she sees me up before 6am she puts her hands on her hips and demands that I go back to bed and get some more sleep! Which is very sweet. She knows I have chronic fatigue and has decided that I need more rest. She's probably right.
    I haven't done prompts in AGES, so this seems kind of fun to me, though I feel like my time is so limited already that it would mean I get less of the other things done that I need to.
