🚁 DJI MAVIC AIR BEST PICTURE SETTINGS 🎥 - Prevent Noise/Grain and Soft Footage | 4K Cinematic

- The DJI Mavic Air is a great drone and a lot of people are discussing if the picture/video quality is better than the quality of the Mavic Pro. As of its small sensor, the quality of the Mavic Air is definitely limited and so you really need the very best settings to get great looking, cinematic results.
The problem with the Mavic Pro was that you needed to set the sharpness to +1 to prevent it from softening trees etc. You don't have this problem anymore with the DJI Mavic Air. But therefore you can easily get noise and also lose some fine details with the wrong settings when using the custom styles.
I always want to get the very best quality out of my cameras and drones. That's why I tested most of the possible custom styles (sharpness, contrast, and saturation) settings of the DJI Mavic Air. This way I found out the very best picture settings that work for me.

Nice! Will apply this tips on my drone!
beautiful

AMAZING footage bro!!! Well done and looking forward to learning from you :-)
Thank you 👍🏻
This has to be the best and most comprehensive video I've seen on the mavic airs video! Thanks for this, really liked it. I got one question, you mention about keeping sharpness at 0. What do you think of sharpness at +1? Is it too much?
Thanks a lot. I always try to keep the digital sharpening low as it easily gives an over-sharp look. That's why I wouldn't recommend using +1 for sharpness. You can shoot in 0 and add a bit sharpness in post when you want more. With too much sharpening you can also get some flickers at the edges, especially when there are a lot of small details in the video.
Great review and your cinematography is very nice 👍
Thank you 🙏
Good job Pascal, thanks!
Glad you like it. Thank you 👍🏻
Ive had so many issues with noise with my magic air even when I shot at iso100 and no one could help! Thx so much I’m gonna try changing my contrast and hopefully that helps. I really had no idea why I had so much noise! Great video!
Yes same for me on my first try. Also expose a bit to the right in the histogram. Usually an EV of +0,3 or 0,7 work pretty good for less noise and more details in the shadows.
great tips bro!
Thanks
Hi Pascal! One more great video. To make it even greater I think it would be good to add results of settings in text description. Thank you
Thanks for the suggestion.
This was so helpful, thanks!
You’re welcome
That's nice
Thanks man!
Welcome 👍🏻
Hi Pascal,
I really like your channel and looking forward to every Sunday for new material.
I have to question:
1. How do you handle local drone regulation around the world. I mean, do you just fly your your drone.... and of course think carefully where you fly - and hope for the best. Or? ( For example in Denmark you need a license to fly in city’s and only as a professional )
2. which fps do you normally use with your drone? ( film in 30fps and slow it down to 24fps to get the smoothness I know you do all your work in 24fps
Best regards
Brian
Thanks,
it depends on the country. If possible I try to stick as close to the rules as possible and get registration if it’s an easy process, like in France. And in countries that make it too difficult I either don’t fly or especially if the police is corrupt, I just fly very carefully. It’s pretty rare that I fly in cities. I think if it’s not professional work, flying in cities doesn’t do much anyway and just causes an unnecessary risk. If a city has a river or so, then that’s usually a good option to fly over to stay save.
Regarding fps i mostly shoot in 24 as most of the time you don’t need any slow motion for drones. It already looks smooth enough.
Interesting
amazing I subscribed :) where did you get your bag to fit everything by the way?
Thank you 👍🏻 You can use every bag. I putted the mavic air bag from the fly more combo inside and left it open to place the mavic air and everything else. Then placed my camera on top. Got that bag in a shopping center here in Thailand for 8€ 😉 But I already switched to the Lowepro protactic aw 350. This bag is amazing as I can take the drone through its side pockets. So I can get the drone ready while I‘m walking. Perfect when I do daytrips with groups that don’t want to wait for me.
Man hört den deutschen Akzent einfach überall raus:D
Gutes Video !
;-)
Thanks, Thanks, Thanks!
Welcome
Nice video. Helpful.. I just realized how noisy the image can get when you don't expose to the right, even at low ISO :/ It's definitively nice to have such a small drone, but I kinda regret I didn't wait for the mavic pro 2 to launch...
Yes, always expose a bit to the right. But I did not have much problems with noise in the long term.
I am one who uses Neat video with my mavic air footage. 0, -3, -2 works best for me. If there is less sun I use 0,0,0 or 0, -2, -2. Also make sure to use nd filters
Thanks for sharing your settings 👍🏻
I use the same setting as you, but my footage is really grainy. While verythin is correctly exposed and the ISO is 100
Hi Pascal, great video. When you sat on the rock in front of the water during the second half of the video, I am wondering if you used the GoPro 7 black there?
Thanks, GoPro7 wasn’t even out at this time... shot on the Panasonic GH5.
@@pascalbasel thanks for that information.
Nice job. I know exactly what you mean by the zebras on the Air. It defaults to more sensitivity than required. I think you like your image a little hotter than I do, but I may shut my zebras off too.
Yes, normally the zebras would be good but I can definitely work with the details that are usually hidden by the zebra. That‘s probably due to the less flat cinelike profile and 100mbit/s.
Hi there,
Thanks your video. Where did you buy your backpack?
Thanks, this backpack was actually a pretty cheap one from a shopping center in Chiang Mai. Now I use the Lowepro protactic 350 aw. Very good one for Mavic Air and DSLM. Quick access to everything...
Hey Pascal, great video, I tried those settings and it looks better now, but what about the gimbal settings? I can't get those smooth moves and turns that you do
Hi Dan, thanks.
Please make sure to use the newest firmware. The firmware one the GoPro when you buy it doesn’t support Ultrasmooth stabilization in 4K60.
Also like with a gimbal or other stabilized camera you have to learn how to walk or move the camera properly. Do small steps and slightly bend your knees while walking. Also some shots are just not possible to capture perfectly into your camera, so you have to stabilize a bit more in post. Then when publishing you should publish in either 30fps, 25 or 24fps and slow down your 60fps footage to 50 or even 40%. That also makes it look a lot smoother. That’s why I shoot in 4K60. I don’t publish in 60fps, just use it to slow it down.
I can make a tutorial video about that soon.
Great video man!! Very helpful. So what are the settings you determined worked best for you?
Thanks, settings are mentioned in the video.
Do you use iso 100? and saturation -8? And this was the best video for the mavic air I have ever seen... Thanks....
Thanks, yes I always use iso 100. For saturation you can use everything between -3 and 0. It’s not so important.
But there is an update: with the newer firmwares it seems like -3 contrast doesn’t cause that much noise anymore exposed properly.
Pascal Basel Videography okay but if it is to bright outside, do you put the shutter higher?
Like your video, I have a Mavic air as well and i wonder what is the best way to set the camera values? It is possible that a dark filter on dark enviroment caused a grainy and noisy footage? Thanks
A bit more specific please. A filter doesn’t cause noise.
Thanks for the quick answer, I mean not the filter itself, it is possible that a dark filter on dark environment on automatic settings, caused the ISO to rise adding noise to the footage?
Why should you use an nd filter when it’s dark? It’s only meant for bright environments to lower the shutterspeed.
Pascal Basel Videography Yeah, I know, I was on a rush and I forgot tonremove the filter, later that day, I was checking the video and realized how noisy was. My fault, never again, ha ha ha, thanks for your help and continue the way you are doing, good flights!
Hi Pascal! Any noise reductor for final takes?
Neat Video
Or do you mean in this video?
As far as I remember I didn’t use any noise reduction for this video.
@@pascalbasel yeah, final takes in the river. I have a Mavic Air and till now, cant configure it for noiseless takes. Low iso, exposing to the right, good light.. but in the post, same problems, too noise, mainly in the light greens :/
I think the only solution is Neat Video. But, it is expansive for brazilians filmakers :/ And a little heavy for MPB Retina Late 2012.
Ok..it didnt look bad was there a filter in front?
No ND Filters, Hard to get here in Thailand at the moment.
Pascal Basel very impressive results without having used any ND filters. I have a set I just got for the mavic air. I hope to capture footage as good as you and will try you settings. Can you go into detail on your EXP settings? Thanks.
Thanks, but the most noticeable difference with ND filters will be that you get more motion blur when flying close to objects. The image quality itself or noise shouldn't change. An ND is just like a sunglass. It lets less light in, not more dynamic range (maybe 0.2 stops or so as digital sensors recognize shadows more than highlights but not noticeable) or something else. Just helps with lowering the shutter speed. I prefer polarizers as they can really make the sky bluer, leaves greener and water more transparent.
was this on normal or c-chinlike
That was all shot in Cinelike. I wouldn't recommend using Normal if you want to get the most out of that drone.
so you like 0 0 -1
Loved the video, nice work! Very comprehensive. I've taken some notes for my next Mavic Air flight. I just posted a video talking about what I liked and didn't like about my air, I'd really appreciate some feedback on it! Cheers!
Thank you, and great video of your Mavic Air in BC.
Thank you, and great video of your Mavic Air in BC.
Thanks!
Cool , I have to say.. I am sorry to say but I am not VERY impressed with this footage (in terms of quality) ,it's not very different from Mavic Pro which also has it's drawbacks, i've seen many reviews comparing Pro to the AIR and I must say.. sometimes in good light Air looks a bit better but other time Mavic Pro looks WAY better than the Air footage.. and strangely it appears often.. that in some situations Air footage seems very mushy , muddy, with lots of noise and little colour information.. other time in good contrast light Air footage looks amasing.. Why is that ?, on the other hand I've seen lot's of Mavic Pro footage that looks also sort of "unsaturated" but at least low noise, and very sharp (always).. I think, both are great but in certain weather conditions and some kind of haze ? in the skies they both struggle.. with Mavic Air struggles a little more.., cheers! :) try use auto style instead of any sort of cine-d or natural style compare them! it may sort some issues. - found it true in some cases
Can’t agree. I recently color graded both MA and MP and the MP sucked like hell. The MA has a bit of noise in the shadows but when you expose (ETTR) correctly that disappears in color grading.
