I know this video is a year old, but I was talking to my dad today & I told him about your paint-making.
I promised to send him your video about how to make binder, coz he loves buying dollar store eyeshadow to draw with.
I also sent him your paint-mulling video.
Hopefully, he'll be inspired to create again. 💖 He's the most talented artist I know.

I hope you don't mind me asking. How does your dad use the make up? (ie with a brush straight from the pot? as a paint? with a dip pen? etc....?)
I need ideas! I have so much old make up that I thought I could use like a pastel powder or... something (I haven't tried it). I was so excited a couple of hours ago when I watched the paint-mulling video 😆 but now I've come crashing down to earth to find the equipment is a bit out of my price range 😭

    • @maggpiprime954

@@PrincessFidelma I don't actually know. His finished work looks like chalk pastels, so I assume he just uses his fingertips. Probably brushes, too, which can be moistened with water for more saturated colours.
And no fixative, so I doubt his stuff will have any real longevity.
He's used makeup pencils too, but they tend to leach out greasy moisturizers (bleh).
      Also:
If you don't already know, a really good hack I learned from more than one art teacher, is to use hairspray as fixative. My preference is unscented pump, not aerosol.

    • @PrincessFidelma
      @PrincessFidelma Год назад +4

@@maggpiprime954 Thanks 😊 Used like pastels was the only way I could think of working, but I was worried about how well they would last. I'd forgotten about the hairspray hack, then I remembered I few years ago I found an old aerosol hairspray in the back of a craft cupboard, and was like "What is that doing here?" then I remembered that 1 pastels lesson I had at college about 12 years earlier 😆 I was always afraid to use it, I was scared the chemicals would eat the paper.
Oh! Sorry, I thought I replied straight away 🤦🏻‍♀

@@PrincessFidelma No worries, I recognised the convo right away! 😄

What you need to make watercolor binder:
    Container
    Measuring tool
    Funnel
    Mixing tool
    Gum Arabic powder
Distilled water (water thats been boiled to get rid of impurities)
    Vegetable glycerin (makes paint glossy)
Optional: honey, and few drops of clove oil
    Recipe:
Measure half a cup of gum Arabic powder
About a cup of hot distilled water
Mix together for little bit (clumps won’t dissolve right away)
About a tablespoon of vegetable glycerin (helps paint looks less chalky if dealing with powdery pigment) (other option: honey)
About half a tablespoon of honey (might help paint re-wet better)
Couple drops of clover oil (apparently helps to last longer and smell nice)
After mixing gum Arabic you want it to turn into a sap
Leave alone for half an hour so it cool and dissolve
After about 30 minutes should be little thicker than water
Put lid on and put in fridge
Keep in fridge when not in using because it could mold
Tends to last about 1-2 months depending on the care
You can keep bits of paint binder out at a time
Squeeze bottle makes it easier to apply to the paint
Now you have a watercolor paint binder that you can use to make paint out of almost anything
    This is what I’ve learned

Water+sugar+warmth= mold. So if the binder isn’t refrigerated it can mold, but once the paint is in pans and dried, it’s unlikely to mold. As long as you make sure your paints are completely dry before storing. 😊

    • @torakfett3351
      @torakfett3351 Год назад

There are other ways to make watercolor. I highly encourage you to read into old recipes (that’s basically what we’re doing, using old recipes with eyeshadow. If you mixed the eyeshadow with oil paint binders you can turn it to oil paint as well) so you can play with a bunch of ingredients, you can even just buy the binder flat out from a company.
QOR sells their watercolor binder for $11. Which is cheaper than all these separate ingredients so if you just want to not have your old eyeshadow go to waste and not play with making paint as much, just getting the binder and a crystal mortar and pestle would be the cheapest way to do this. I checked, a lot.

The palette knife? You can get them anywhere, online, craft stores, in packs with paint brushes, with paint.
She also mentions the tools in the beginning of the video.

You can use honey without glycerin. Glycerin really just helps the paints spread smoother and helps with keeping your paints hydrated if you're making paint pans

You can but it in any small container like: beer/bottle caps and many more things. You let it dry in it and you can use it like water color ( it doesnt need a lid)
