I took a fancy chart and turned it into a McKinsey style slide

  • I took this beautiful chart from Visual Capitalist to see if I could reimagine it as a realistic PowerPoint slide. It's a chart that shows when each company passed the $1 trillion mark.
Plus, the chart is ranked and color coded according to present day market cap, with Apple at the top and meta at the bottom. What's good about this chart is it clearly shows the journey for each company.
But what's not good about this chart is it's hard to compare those journeys against each other. So to fix this, I put them all into a single line chart.
I first added a simple title, then changed the colors to match the original chart. Then I added a full sentence slide title to explain the key takeaway of the chart, and I highlighted that key takeaway by adding this $1 trillion line and shading the area that represents 2021.
Then lastly I added logos and arrows to show when each company passed the $1 trillion mark for the first time. The result is a nice looking slide that you could realistically use in a corporate presentation.

It's ironic how as data visualisation becomes more sophisticated, we (and our audience- Directors etc.) desire easy-to-comprehend simplicity (as the quote goes akin to "smart, intelligent, genius, simple).
I appreciate your work and outputs, Analyst Academy
