Awesome interview. I love this lady. I grew up watching her skate in the early 70's as Captain of the Philadelphia Warriors. My all time favorite female skater. I was blessed to connect with her on fb some years ago. Such an inspiration she is!!!

In reality Judy was not real nice to people who would come up to her and asked for a picture or autograph.I remember I asked her in Korvettes in The Audubon Shopping Center near where she lived in Mr Ephram N.J. and she,was very nasty to me how she got to be a minister I don't know.

Sad to say I heard the very same thing. I never personally met Judy Arnold myself though yes heard similar stores from other fans who encountered her off the track. I always respected many celebrities even if in person give them personal space. I've always assumed they be swamped by admirers & like any human being, every now & then would love to turn off their work after hours too. Always hoped Judy Arnold would return to the Bay Bombers too sadly that never happened either!

@@georgegong6813 Got to meet and, spend a little time with Judy in 1972 at a fund raiser she so graciously attended to raise funds for our non-profit organization. I found her to be reserved and rather shy. I wasn't surprised because I could always see that underneath the Roller Derby facade, was a gentle, shining soul not really anything close to what she appeared to be. Guess you could say, she wore her heart on her sleeve. When I asked if I could have her autograph, she kindly gave it to me. She was my hero for many years here in Philadelphia and will always be. I had the opportunity to talk to Judy by phone a few years ago and she was as gracious and sweet as she was decades before. Sometimes we don't look at "stars" as people. Judy is just like any other person. We all have our good days and bad. We all are troubled at one point or another in our lives. Instead of judging, perhaps we should put ourselves in her shoes. Sometimes the limelight isn't really bright at all. That's why she got out from under it - It was blinding her to what she really needed to see. She's a lovely woman and one of the kindest souls I've ever met. She has succeeded in both Roller Derby and her Spiritual Path in bringing happiness and joy to so many. With Judy, what you see is what you get. She's real and, she's really quite a gentle soul.

@@terrymiddleton6077 That is indeed very good to read thank you for sharing that with me. Or this group. I had a profession myself that got me very close to celebrities from around the world myself. I totally agree with you that there is always another side of majority of them too. I was specifically assigned to work beside many VIP because according to my "Boss" I wasn't star struck & just treated majority like it was just another job. Honestly I've always felt anyhow it pays not to get too close to anyone of them. Though as you noted they're all (Well Most) different off screen. Years ago someone else mentioning approaching Judy Arnold in a grocery store & then described the meet as Judy Arnold coming off as "Cold". I wanted to explain to this person imagine having to have your screen persona on 24 hours. Not knowing if the person who''s approaching you likes or hates you! Anyhow not going any further I think you get the idea. Majority of Roller Derby Skaters were working stiffs like you & I. Perhaps that was another reason why they were @ least endured by me as well. As opposed to other celebrities. I've also found a good secret in having them open up to myself is just treat them no different then another person. Be surprised the reaction or response you will get. Sometimes it is negative like spectrumlocalb191 mentioned. Sometimes not though honestly we do need to put things into perspective here. They're off work perhaps rather stick to themselves for some quiet time. Personally wished Judy Arnold stayed in Derby & especially with the team she broke in with...the San Francisco Bay Bombers. Then the Roller Derby we all knew & love no longer too! Guess nothing is forever.

@@georgegong6813 Your replay says it all, George. "Working stiffs, like you and I," is spot on. They had to assemble that Banked Track before putting on a show and break it down afterwards. They had to wash their uniforms in laundramats when on the road, as Anne Calvello wrote in "Five Strides on the Banked Track," and traveled from one city to another in a bus. Can you imagine how our favorite sports stars of today would treat us if we asked for their autographs after having to go through all of that? Not too great of a life style, right? The Bombers were great! Nope, things just ain't the same with Roller Derby anymore. So glad we had it when it was fantastic. Just gotta thank our lucky stars we did.
