I've been following you Forrest since summer/fall of 2021. Kinda fallen off my youtube radar for a minute. Today, I'm kinda going through a mini-binge catch up. The algo gave me the Jenny Thai Swede interview , and now this interview with Eric. Both were great. Keep pushing!
I absolutely loved this interview, articulate, open, upbeat and relevant for pretty much everyone. I knew a handful of black guys in the late 70s who stayed on after the Vietnam era and they had interesting stories but later there seemed to be fewer in Bangkok so it was interesting to hear an uptodated story. I lived in Bangkok for 30 years before moving to Chiang Rai and I can relate to everything he feels about Bangkok. I tried to approach Thailand as a "foreigner" and not as a white guy or American. Put out the right energy, speak the language and understand the people and culture, and the whole identity issue fades into insignificance. We are all just foreigners in a foreign land and what a great place to live. My only gripe with you Forest is that you never interact with your viewers and never respond to comments.
I didnt know of Erick but from this video he seems like a great chap, awesome mindset and i think if we can we should all try lead more with positivity because everything and everywhere in world you only can get what you put into it 💜

I am happy every time that people feel that Thailand is home. I am the 3rd generation whose ancestors immigrated to this country. It's been like this for a long time, it's a melting pot of races and will always be. We are multicultural, a culture of reconciliation. Welcome to the Thailand family.

That aint hard at all unless you've never been to either. THAILAND IS 100xs better and less stressful that the FAILAPHINNES. Been in Philippines for 6 years until Sep 2021. Take my word leave Philippines and filipinas ALONE.

About the Filipina relationship thing been there done that, Its like rolling the dice, hit or miss it sucks big time if you miss and your Pinày is full of drama, so I have stayed away dating a Filipina since 2014. The Philippines is meant to be my paradise Islands of peace and solitude and intend to keep it that way and not about having a relationship again. I can resonate with your perspective about Filipinas though and the complications if you get married or date the wrong Filipina and controlling her family.
Unfortunately in America there is no box for just American You have to check a box white, black, Hispanic/white Hispanic, Asian, or native American There's no box for German/American or Canadian/american America doesn't let black people be just American. And doesn't acknowledge the culture we bring to america

Mr. Lee. This was the first vlog I saw on your site. It was compelling and insightful. Mr. Prince was straight to the point and gave me more insightful information for me, an African-American male, than all the other sites that frankly "sugar-coated" the black experience in Thailand, or generally Asia. I just subscribed to your site and will also subscribe to Mr. Prince. I'm retiring in five years. Bangkok, along with Baguio City, Philippines, and Panama City, Panama, are the three places I plan to travel to before settling in my chosen location. Keep up the excellent work. Peace.

15:40 THIS IS EXACTLY HOW I FEEL RIGHT NOW!! 🤣🤣🤣 I’m 39 going on 40 this Dec and I’m dedicating the next 2 - 3 years to saving as much money as possible then flying my ass out with middle fingers up in the air as I leave the country. I’m tired of the racism, the hate, the unnecessary culture wars and the constant feeling of anger every time I turn on the news or open my social media. Ok enough of my ranting, just in a mood lol. Make sure to generate enough passive income to retire at such a young age in your early 40s. Inflation can rob you of some security that might look good now but in the future will be harder to get buy even in a lower cost of living country like Thailand. Even in Thailand as Covid restriction have gone away and tourist returning prices are going up for housing and food.

RUclipsrs are mostly pushing the Narrative of how great it is abroad because it Sells 💲 💰👈and especially that there is little to No Racism for black Men! Interesting interview. I liked hearing your observations about racism in America vs the way people treat you abroad. I’ve met Eric several times at a Bangkok expat hangout. Great guy with a lot of energy.
Great interview, but I have to disagree with the part about the USA being the most racist country in the world. Thing is in a lot of Asian countries, especially Thailand.. the locals will smile to your face, but behind your back will say all kinds of racist things about you. Would you ever see a shop or night club in the USA, with a sign on the door saying, “No blacks” or “No foreigners”?
Uhhhhhhh YES!!!!! Because the US doesn't have "Whites Only" and "Coloured" signs doesn't mean it's not there. As I said, there's levels to this and context matters. What place is more racists than another is a matter of perspective. I don't know if you're black or not, but that's where my perspective is coming from. And I acknowledge that I can only speak to the experience of myself and my community. If you feel differently, then ok. But lets not pretend because some progress has been made that the states is some mythical utopia. Sundown towns still exist.
@@Minoritynomad ask a Nigerian about their experiences in China. They were basically all kicked out of their condos and hotels, because they were accused of spreading covid. They had to sleep out on the streets.

Quick question, have you worked for a Thai Company? Have you went to a Thai school? Any sane person knows the US has issues. If you think the US is so bad and racist, then why don't you get rid of your American Citizen and switched to a different one?
Digital nomad is only a solid means of employment here in Thailand if you can get a work permit. So, teaching English just to get a work permit is a smart way to go. Note that I have lived here for over a decade and I know of very few people who have ever gotten in trouble for working without a work permit.
Interesting conversation. This vlog popped up out of nowhere. If you think that Bangkok wasn't sterile back a decade ago, imagine how non-sterile it was back in the late 1990s which is when I first started going to Bangkok almost annually and solo. It was before there was either a skytrain system or a subway system. A hot mess, but a beautiful chaotic hot mess. LOL! I was last in Bangkok on my 2019/2020 trip. I hope to get back as I miss it a lot. Back around 1999 or 2000, I remember my taxi pulling up to my hotel on Rajadamri Road, around midnight to drop me off, and a man with an elephant was walking his elephant down busy Rajadamri Road. There was all kinds of cray cray back then. The hotel concierge and I were talking about it around 6 years ago as he was retiring, after 50 years of service, and we were going through humorous memories of Bangkok's past. When I first got to Bangkok, I also felt comfortable there. But, then again, I had been used to being around Thais as L.A. has the largest population of Thais living outside of Thailand. I've been around Thais since a teen and I'm in my mid-60s. It seemed natural even though being in Thailand was chaotic at first. Bangkok either stimulates the brain or wears it out. But, when I need rest from it all, I head to Penang. As for the African American vs African situation of treatment, I agree there can be a difference in treatment. I've seen situations of Africans treated differently in places around the world. But, by showing a U.S. passport, many times I was just flagged through in places overseas whereas Africans were detained. And there were also non-passport situations that I have observed over the decades. As far as racism in travel, racism can be found anywhere. But, it's about how one deals with it when it happens as opposed to whether or not it will happen. And how one deals with it, depends on one's mindset. I've seen and experienced a lot of stuff over almost 5 decades of regular overseas travel, both with racism and sexism. I started traveling overseas solo as a teen in the early 1970s. As for police shakedowns in Bangkok, I never had to deal with that situation, but there were a lot of folks who did. And I agree with the Thonglor area. I canceled a short-term rental on one trip when it got really bad in Thonglor with foreigner/tourist shakedowns, around 2011 or 2012, I think it was. The situation ended up in the Bangkok Post and also on travel forums in discussions as people who had experienced it were reporting it.On that trip, I got a rental in my regular neighborhood. No problems. The only times I've been in Thonglor are with my Thai friend, born and raised in Bangkok. Greetings from Los Angeles
Intresting guy seems very good natured. I would like to see his his video about what soured him about living in America. We can all guess what happened specially if he has been away for so long. But its great that he can choose to live where hes most comfortable. The world is usually not so kind.
maybe i'll do that video in the future. But I can save time, the TLDR; My overall quality of life, from social interactions to living cost, are all significantly better abroad. There's no reason for me to ever live in the states again because it would be going backward for me personally.
@@Minoritynomad Race dominates so much of life in the US. Reading about the violence of racial politics is also shocking specially to an outsider like myself. It seems like the experiment has gone wrong specially if your in the middle of it. As an outsider who lived there as a college student and has personally experienced prejudice but now occationally visits as a tourist I however have felt that we asians are being treated better. This is all prepandemic of course and asians are now targeted for hate crimes since my last visit. It should be intresting for my next visit, being called a gouk doesnt bother me as much now as it did as a student but violence is another thing altogether.
The whole truth and nothing but the truth my goal is to set roots in Pattaya but after this interview I may look into Bangkok I’m coming for two weeks next year.

Great interview Erick, thanks for sharing your experiences. America has devolved enormously over the past few decades and frankly, I have no intention of ever going back there. Ignore the negative comments here which clearly betray a lack of international experience and general naivety. I left Thailand the year you arrived but am looking to move back there at some stage. I've been around the world a hundred times but Thailand (specifically BKK) is the place that keeps calling to me. Maybe our paths will cross in the future and if they do it'd be my pleasure to shout you a beer. All the best.

I didn't agree with everything he said. I wish he would have explained why he things America is the most racist country. The media fans the flames of division and racism but I rarely if ever encounter direct racism in the US.
Me and Forrest definitely don't agree on everything. A very important characteristic in all of my friends. I wish I had more time to discuss why I feel America is the most racist country in the world. But generally, it's a topic I tend not to want to dig too deep into as I've largely removed myself from the US. Maybe a future video. But, I tend to try and keep things as positive as possible. Racism exist but as a person of color, I will say this gets way overblown and can often be used as an excuse to lock yourself into a victim mindset. While society is not perfect yet (When has it ever?) I certainly have seen progress in my own lifetime. Most people have faced some sort of unfairness in their lifetime if it's not racism. People need to take ownership for their own reaction to life if they want change. As you have a greater probability to change yourself and your reaction than changing others. Which ironically you often see the change in the world around you when you focus on self improvement and reframing your initial reaction. Rather than try to point out the weeds in the other persons garden.
I agree mostly. Humans are talented creatures. We can both focus on ourselves and the world around us. Your position taken at face value would result in almost no social progress and a society that's more selfish than it already is. I fully agree that many people use racism as an excuse.

15:40 THIS IS EXACTLY HOW I FEEL RIGHT NOW!! 🤣🤣🤣 I’m 39 going on 40 this Dec and I’m dedicating the next 2 - 3 years to saving as much money as possible then flying my ass out with middle fingers up in the air as I leave the country. I’m tired of the racism, the hate, the unnecessary culture wars and the constant feeling of anger every time I turn on the news or open my social media.

Make sure to generate enough passive income to retire at such a young age in your early 40s. Inflation can rob you of some security that might look good now but in the future will be harder to get buy even in a lower cost of living country like Thailand. Even in Thailand as Covid restriction have gone away and tourist returning prices are going up for housing and food.
I’m 49 and will be there in 4 years. I gotta get that passive income stream first. Best of luck to you!

Great interview, but I have to disagree with the part about the USA being the most racist country in the world. Thing is in a lot of Asian countries, especially Thailand.. the locals will smile to your face, but behind your back will say all kinds of racist things about you. Would you ever see a shop or night club in the USA, with a sign on the door saying, “No blacks” or “No foreigners”?

Uhhhhhhh YES!!!!! Because the US doesn't have "Whites Only" and "Coloured" signs doesn't mean it's not there. As I said, there's levels to this and context matters. What place is more racists than another is a matter of perspective. I don't know if you're black or not, but that's where my perspective is coming from. And I acknowledge that I can only speak to the experience of myself and my community. If you feel differently, then ok. But lets not pretend because some progress has been made that the states is some mythical utopia. Sundown towns still exist.

Digital nomad is only a solid means of employment here in Thailand if you can get a work permit. So, teaching English just to get a work permit is a smart way to go. Note that I have lived here for over a decade and I know of very few people who have ever gotten in trouble for working without a work permit.

If you think that Bangkok wasn't sterile back a decade ago, imagine how non-sterile it was back in the late 1990s which is when I first started going to Bangkok almost annually and solo. It was before there was either a skytrain system or a subway system. A hot mess, but a beautiful chaotic hot mess. LOL! I was last in Bangkok on my 2019/2020 trip. I hope to get back as I miss it a lot.
Back around 1999 or 2000, I remember my taxi pulling up to my hotel on Rajadamri Road, around midnight to drop me off, and a man with an elephant was walking his elephant down busy Rajadamri Road. There was all kinds of cray cray back then.
The hotel concierge and I were talking about it around 6 years ago as he was retiring, after 50 years of service, and we were going through humorous memories of Bangkok's past.
When I first got to Bangkok, I also felt comfortable there. But, then again, I had been used to being around Thais as L.A. has the largest population of Thais living outside of Thailand. I've been around Thais since a teen and I'm in my mid-60s. It seemed natural even though being in Thailand was chaotic at first. Bangkok either stimulates the brain or wears it out. But, when I need rest from it all, I head to Penang.
As for the African American vs African situation of treatment, I agree there can be a difference in treatment. I've seen situations of Africans treated differently in places around the world. But, by showing a U.S. passport, many times I was just flagged through in places overseas whereas Africans were detained. And there were also non-passport situations that I have observed over the decades.
As far as racism in travel, racism can be found anywhere. But, it's about how one deals with it when it happens as opposed to whether or not it will happen. And how one deals with it, depends on one's mindset. I've seen and experienced a lot of stuff over almost 5 decades of regular overseas travel, both with racism and sexism. I started traveling overseas solo as a teen in the early 1970s.
As for police shakedowns in Bangkok, I never had to deal with that situation, but there were a lot of folks who did. And I agree with the Thonglor area. I canceled a short-term rental on one trip when it got really bad in Thonglor with foreigner/tourist shakedowns, around 2011 or 2012, I think it was. The situation ended up in the Bangkok Post and also on travel forums in discussions as people who had experienced it were reporting it.On that trip, I got a rental in my regular neighborhood. No problems. The only times I've been in Thonglor are with my Thai friend, born and raised in Bangkok.

Intresting guy seems very good natured. I would like to see his his video about what soured him about living in America. We can all guess what happened specially if he has been away for so long. But its great that he can choose to live where hes most comfortable. The world is usually not so kind.
maybe i'll do that video in the future. But I can save time, the TLDR; My overall quality of life, from social interactions to living cost, are all significantly better abroad. There's no reason for me to ever live in the states again because it would be going backward for me personally.
@@Minoritynomad Race dominates so much of life in the US. Reading about the violence of racial politics is also shocking specially to an outsider like myself. It seems like the experiment has gone wrong specially if your in the middle of it. As an outsider who lived there as a college student and has personally experienced prejudice but now occationally visits as a tourist I however have felt that we asians are being treated better. This is all prepandemic of course and asians are now targeted for hate crimes since my last visit. It should be intresting for my next visit, being called a gouk doesnt bother me as much now as it did as a student but violence is another thing altogether.

I left Thailand the year you arrived but am looking to move back there at some stage. I've been around the world a hundred times but Thailand (specifically BKK) is the place that keeps calling to me. Maybe our paths will cross in the future and if they do it'd be my pleasure to shout you a beer.

I didn't agree with everything he said. I wish he would have explained why he things America is the most racist country. The media fans the flames of division and racism but I rarely if ever encounter direct racism in the US.
Me and Forrest definitely don't agree on everything. A very important characteristic in all of my friends. I wish I had more time to discuss why I feel America is the most racist country in the world. But generally, it's a topic I tend not to want to dig too deep into as I've largely removed myself from the US. Maybe a future video. But, I tend to try and keep things as positive as possible. Racism exist but as a person of color, I will say this gets way overblown and can often be used as an excuse to lock yourself into a victim mindset. While society is not perfect yet (When has it ever?) I certainly have seen progress in my own lifetime. Most people have faced some sort of unfairness in their lifetime if it's not racism. People need to take ownership for their own reaction to life if they want change. As you have a greater probability to change yourself and your reaction than changing others. Which ironically you often see the change in the world around you when you focus on self improvement and reframing your initial reaction. Rather than try to point out the weeds in the other persons garden.

For example, if you look at Forest's videos he doesn't talk or interview how the Myanmar or even the Rohingya, etc. are treated into slavery or racism in Thailand. There is no laws against racism in Asia. He talks about racism against Americans, which doesn't exist in pretty much all of Asia. Because almost all Asians love Americans. Even when I was walking in the Streets of Hanoi they where playing American Pop Music. But in Asia if you come from a country that is bottom of the food chain you will feel racism is much worse then the US and you might become slaves just like in Thailand enforced by the Thai government.
