I love this. No "lifestyle" BS, no overt ad placement, no frills. Just the search, with locals, undisclosed breaks, and seriously challenging conditions.
So true,,,,,,,, I wish I had a Go Pro in 1967 , when I surfed Lake Erie in Nov. with only a sweatshirt. This great video brings back fond memories of surfing storms.
@dan111dan111 well im from the island - you would have to come here.. I would suggest taking a trip to tofino... good spot to learn! cheers and enjoy its a special place
I saw this at the House Of Vans in Chicago. Burton was there and he was unbelievably cool he was really stoked and just so cool. He kept going on and on but it was all good. Anyways Dylan Graves has been personal invited to Lake Michigan by the President of the South End Surf Club.
Soooo much respect for these guys!!! This is why I love surfing. Just pure good vibe and positivity. Specially Burton I would love to hang with that guy at the line up he’s just a pure positive spirit!! Yyeeeewwwww!!!!
Did this for ten plus years . You spend 90% waiting for the day . This is why I took up strapless kitesurfing these lakes are epic for kiting . Really miss that place🤙
Dude, paddling in looked terrifying!!!! unfortunately ill never not be scared of the power of the ocean. Waves and all the crazy movement. You guys are so skilled.
Burton, that was crazy brother. I'm so stoked to see you living your dreams. Love you and your passion for life. Much love to you brother. Off The Wall Dude!!
Well explained and put together - hoods off to the production crew! Great job making it out at that first break Dylan. Not an easy paddle! Burton... what a call!
I have only surfed along the Texas Gulf Coast. Port Aransas, Fish Pass Jetties, Surfside, Matagorda Beach. Choppy, sloppy waves. Longboards, eggs, funshapes, old style fish shapes. Nothing crazy, just some mellow frontside turns. I live in Austin, 4 hrs from the coast. I gave my 8'2" funshape to a friend so his daughters can use it at their beachhouse in Port A. This series is the most entertaining thing I've seen in a long time. Makes me wanna go down there and paddle out! Thanks for showing the fun side!
I live a couple hours south of there, and remember the weather reports of how big the waves were going to be. Glad to see some people got out there at the right time, great video!
I still can’t get my head around lake waves. I understand that wind drives it an all but these are solid waves. So stoked for you guys 🤙 As an add on, these guys are real surfers, fuck that
Great job Dylan!! I learned to surf with your dad in South Miami Beach. Saw him from time to time when we lived in Brevard county. Last time I saw him was when I lost to him...AGAIN...in the finals of a early '70s Easter contest at Canaveral pier. Happy to see you're continue his legend.
This video i will always remember to come back to when life is shit .... i will look at Burtons stoke .. and just feed of that! He seems like one of the coolest dudes that walks this planet! Nothing makes me happier than to see people like him! And i totally agree with Paul Roman ... He is the definition of "Off the wall" ... Vans needs to put this dude on a lifetime sponsor, just for beeing the coolest dude ever! Loooaaads of love from cold ass Sweden!
this is awesome and the name is crazy haha! back in 2012 I did a photo documentary on Lake Erie Surfers for my Documentary photo class semester project in college and I called it "Strange Waves" so seeing "Weird Waves" season 1: Great Lakes made me smile and took me back. Its one of my favorite photo projects i've done! Also, really great video!
Gosh what a great home movie of your surf trip visit DYLAN !...Glad to see you got so stoked and even slammed around a little bit in the cold. Now you're Ice Water Superior official. Open invite to visit up here again anytime. Again, Great Vid !.....e..
Thanks E Wilkie, great answer. Used to do a bit of diving and went for a couple of surfs in the 5 and 7mm suits. Hard work so lots of respect for that. I guess if the suit seals well that probably helps. Ill check out your channel. Cheers from Oz - close to 40C down here at the moment☺
Much respect fellas.... Gnarly just having the balls to paddle out with ice cubes bobbing around with you in the water.... looks fuckin’ freezing. Great work Dylan Graves.
Should have went to Marquette Michigan on Lake Superior. Definitely guys that have been surfing the area for a while.. great video . This yooper girl enjoyed it
so refreshing.. Best project / best Vid of the year. Thank you Dylan, thank you Vans, you guys made my day. Surfing is all about having fun . We're just a big family and that's fucking good
Loving this video right here. Dylan, you don't have to go all the way up there for novelties. Jump a few islands over to St. Croix, it always feels like a novelty when it's going off here....Of course if it's going off here then it's bananas for you back home....
I was a Lake Erie Storm Surfer in 1967. With 5 other dedicated surfers. A few could afford wetsuits,, rest of us wore Sweatshirts, and had a bonfire on the beach. Pretty gnarly in Nov. Cowabunga!
Wisco in da Haus! Fresh water waves in Wisconsin? These guys are LIVIN' da stoke the Wisco way!! After 24 years surfing SoCal waves this Wisco boy needs to catch one of these!!!
How can you look to check the waves? Blizzard time! Offshore, even. Barreled on Superior, light up a bomber dude!! That first place- rad rocks, chunks of ice, good waves.
That second break was sick. I'd imagine the first one can prob get good too when it's a little smaller. Can't imagine what it's like being prob 1 out of 10 people to get barreled in the great lakes
Hey yo.... Could any of youse Ben Gravy followers please explain to me what it is that you like aboot his vids? The Nub crew used to be Jackass wannabees. Nut kicks and falling off of roofs... Now it's aboot pontificating while driving, closed-out Jersey swells, and novelty waves. The dude isn't witty nor entertaining in the slightest bit. Maybe he'd be considered a "character" in Iowa, but not in New Jersey. Around here he don't even register. Plus, he started filming at my jetty the other, or otter, summer. And that sucks. You people really get that excited aboot catch phrases like "Nuking" and "for the dream" or whatever? Really? Oh well, I guess it does make sense as surfing has been taken over by the hobbyists and that coincided with the emergence of the "RUclips Celebrity." Y'all know what is worse than Jersey D-list pros? All the hanger-ons and ass kissers that they have. The Barrier Island Heroes whose notoriety decreases ten fold for every mile they travel inland. God damn you, Al Gore, and your Internet machines.
@@Phillyhomicide im from new jersey and what i like about ben gravy is that he can make a video about surfing close-out, 1 foot waves and it is still fun. All of the dumb terms like "nuking" and "for the dream" is just for humor and shouldnt get under your skin. Surfing isnt all about riding clean overhead barrels and winning competitions. I relate to ben gravy because i am not usually blessed with perfect waves but i still have fun with what i have. What is wrong with that?
I’m not even a surfer but this series is entertaining! Love that you surfed Superior in the winter lol! At an average depth of 400’ it’s not much better in the summer haha! Great content, thanks for posting!
Burton is literally the definition of "off the wall" Vans needs to sponsor this dude.

Stoked!!!
Duuuude, Give Burton his own show man!!!
No matter how good/bad a surfer you are - if you're getting out in that cold, you're a pure shredder in my book. Respect!!
