Transcript:
Hi there and thanks for watching. My name is Stephen Campbell and I’m the pastor at the International Baptist Church of Bonn.
You’re watching the eleventh video in our series What Christians Believe. We’re taking a look at the basic beliefs of the Christian faith as part of our aim at IBC Bonn to lay a strong foundation for our members so they can have an active faith and a consistent Christian life.
In the previous video, I discussed the Christian belief that God is the almighty creator of all things and that he still holds creation in His hands.
In this video, we will begin looking at the second section of the Apostles’ Creed.
But to remind ourselves of that creed and to help us remember what Christians believe let us now read those words together.
I. I believe in God the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.
II. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord;
He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary;
He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried;
He descended to the dead.
On the third day He rose again;
He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father;
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
III . I believe in the Holy Spirit,
The holy and global church,
The communion of saints,
The forgiveness of sins,
The resurrection of the body,
And the life everlasting.
In the first section of the Creed we profess to believe in the almighty God, who is the creator of the universe.
The second section of the Creed turns to Jesus Christ, God’s Son.
And today we will simply and briefly look at his name: Jesus.
Names often have a meaning. This was also true in Bible times. In fact, sometimes God tells parents in the Bible what they should name their children. And those names always have a special meaning. They give a hint about the life and purpose of the child.
And before Jesus was born, an angel appeard to his earthly father Joseph and told him to name the child Jesus.
Why? Because the name Jesus means “The Lord Saves.”
This is important because…
Christians believe that Jesus saves us from all our sins and that salvation can not be found in anyone else.
Also…
Christians believe that those who seek their salvation or well-being in saints, in themselves, or anything else do not also believe in the only Savior Jesus.
What does this mean?
Well, it means that you and I must decide who we will trust for our salvation.
But the only person who can save us is Jesus. No one else can save us.
And it means that those who accept Jesus as their Savior by true faith must find in Him alone all that is necessary for their salvation.
But it doesn’t matter how strong your faith is, what matters is WHO you put your faith in.
This means that you cannot look for your salvation in Jesus AND in something else. Either Jesus will have the first place in your heart or He will not.
Either you will trust in Jesus alone for your salvation or you are not saved.
To help you remember …
MEMORY VERSE:
She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins. (Matt 1:21)
That’s it for now. Thank you for watching, and God bless you!
