Test Riding Harleys! - Harley 48, Low Rider S, & Softail Slim S

- On a recent Weekend Ride, we ended up stopping by Orlando Harley on our way to the Ace Cafe. SOMEHOW... we ended up getting talked into test riding some bikes. They weren't very busy and the salesman was insistent, plus Erick whispering "c'mon" in my ear didn't help!

Before I know it, I'm pulling out of Orlando Harley on a brand new, hooked up 2017 Harley Sportster 48, alongside a Low Rider S and Softail Slim S. So much selection!
While we did test ride them, I don't really 'evaluate' them in this video, so don't look to this episode to tell you what I like and / or disliked about each bike. This episode is just us having some fun on some new Harley's, and initial feedback and reactions. We'll get into the nitty gritty on reviewing bikes later!
What I learned from this experience? Don't test ride a bike that's bigger / better than yours. So long as you don't test ride it, you won't know that there's better out there! Alas, this is where the saying "Ignorance is bliss" comes from. They're right.
Thanks for tuning in all, hope you enjoyed the episode! Be sure to Like / Comment / Subscribe!
As always, ride safe out there, & stay vigilant!

Aw shit. Almost like what happened to me at the Harley Dealership. "Well why don't we go take it for a ride for a bit and see how it feels?" Walked out with a new bike a few hours later...
Koinonia lol good for you. ride safe.
Just did this today!lol Took my Roadster in for service and little did I know that would be our last ride together en route to the shop at San Diego Harley. Rolled in w Roadster rolled out w a Slim S!
That 48 was real nice man. Would never have thought white could look so good on a bike.
Looked awesome!
West Oz Rider I traded my iron for that white 48, kept struggling to choose between the black and white 48.... ultimately stayed with what the dealer called "The Pablo" bike/ the white... (Pablo being the deceased Colombian druglord Escobar) ironically in all this,I'm Colombian myself. Aside from that dealership story, lol, freakn dig my 48! Ride safe mate, cheers!
Dude I can almost FEEL your smile that first time you twist on that Low Rider S.. This is why I don't test ride anything, I KNOW I would trade in.. LOL edit: I LOVE that 48 with the white.
RideWithGonk yeah it's a good looking bike
I have that same problem with things, because the first time it makes me giggle like a girl is when I am totally screwed
I rode a 17 softail slim today with a screaming eagle kit on it down the beachside and OMG that bike was just perfect. If only I wasn't a broke college student.
Conner B still a broke college kid?
Still broke?
Still broke?
Still broke?
I bought my 1200 about 8 months before the Low Rider S came out. If I had known, I would have waited and bought the Low. When it comes to bang for your buck, the Low Rider S is a no brainer! Especially when it first came out, (If I am remembering correctly) it was around $1000 to $2000 less then the current price. Don't get me wrong I love my Sportster, but had I known that for a little more money I could have had a bike like that I would have waited. Oh well, you cant have everything LOL.
Hope you are doing well,
Ride safe my friend!
And this is why you dont do test rides lol. youll end up needing a bigger garage
nothing is better than a Sportster for everyday use including lane filtering. Only downside to the 48 is the small fuel tank.
Man that dealer does a good job of customizing those bikes before you take delivery. Nice.
2:43 "this is a mistake" LOL!! Beautiful bikes tho. Thanks for uploading, mate!
I have watched this video a few times. That is one slick salesman. His goal was to pitch the low rider s . Talks little to you while on the 48. He's prepping you. Talks to you more when he switched you to the low rider s. Praises the bike. Knowing he has you. Then from what I can see he did not talk to you when on the slim. Hook line sinker. Nice bike the low rider s.
Notice he doesn't push the low rider. Hint hint. He will let you do that blockhead.
That Dyna Low Rider S is a dream bro !!!! Thanks for the vid Blockhead !
Crazy to look back an re watch when you fell in love with the low rider s lol
And on the next episode of BLOCKHEAD We witness for the first time in history Mrs. BLOCKHEAD cussing and trying to stab Mr. BLOCKHEAD with a spork for buying yet ANOTHER bike
I like how you used a 'spork' vs a fork or a knife, haha
We gotta keep it classy in here bro LOL
I went down to that place. The dealership was cool and they had a lot of bikes, but holy shit were the sales reps pushy. Every other dealership I've been to has been chill, but these guys fit the stereotype of used car salesmen better than anything else.
+Dan A. They're very eager, haha
i got a sportster 1200c. i love the 1200 engine. its perfect on these bikes
I have that same face the first time I test rode the BMW I ended up adding to my garage. I like to have all kinds of rides from Harleys to adventure bikes. That 2007 K1200s was nuts. I need to head back to the Harley dealer. I like the new digital dash they integrated into the handle bar clamp.
I love the 883, it's a super sick bike....but I hope he gets the Dyna lol. Then again, 883 is perfect for Orlando stop, go, stop, go traffic. So many factors. Great vid man, loved it! Glad to hear Ms. Blockhead is learning the ropes.
hmm how can a 883 be a sick bike ? you are ok ?
sdq sdq the 883 is a nice bike for anyone upto a max weight of 170 lbs, it has enough power and handles well. Its a very good starter bike. The 110 motor is plenty of power even stock.
Dragan M ..im 5.7..210..my 883 is still super quick...
I thought the same when I first got on it, and it's definitely enough. Comparatively though, vs the 110 on the Low Rider S... let's just say, 'super quick' is relative.
lol super quick , your first bike ?
that white 48 with white walls though... looks great
Wish the slim s got more vid time or commentary... 😕
I was looking at the 72 sportster, before I bought my 883, the 883 was brand new and as soon as i saw the hard candy hot rod red flake in the light there was no turning back.
I have fallen in love with the '17 Road King Special. It has the Milwaukee 8 and is just super clean. Still has that sporty look with no front fairings or windshield. Soon maybe!
Blockhead I need your help!
I've probably watched this video 10 times already as this video is perfect for me and my current situation; thanks for making it! I currently own a Sportster 48 (first bike, owned for two years, plenty of upgrades like 48 in video), but looking to upgrade to a LRS or Slim S. I test rode both a 2017 Low Rider S, and a 2017 Slim S, (both with 110 motor) and now I'm torn on what I want...Not that I don't like my 48 because I really enjoy riding it, runs like a champ, and its fun to cruise town and throw it around a little when I want. Unfortunately, the small peanut tank, 5 speed trans, and riding position do not allow me to comfortably do any sort of distance riding (100 miles+) since I always have to be on alert for gas stations, RPM is high on highway (excessive vibration), the riding position does not compliment a comfortable cruise, and overall I need something with more torque for those longer hauls. Great bike rippin' around town, but taking it out on rural roads (Central Florida/Lake Okeechobee) away from town gets a little sketchy when I don't know when the next gas station will come up.
LRS Likes: power, braking, agility, smoothness, front fairing, tank size, looks/style, availability of aftermarket parts, but most of all I like having the ability to rip around town or highway if I choose to, and if I want to sit back and cruise I can do that too, very versatile bike.
LRS Dislikes: mid-controls (felt cramped since I have forwards now and I'm only 5'7"), speedo and tach on tank, shifter peg seemed squishy and not a firm shift like my 48, stock exhaust sucks, and also kind of disappointing that for the price of this bike there are still quite a few upgrades/changes that will require additional money spent to get it where I want to be.
Slim S Likes: power, braking, smoothness, tank size, firm shifts, but didn't feel wow'd about anything exceptionally great.
Slim S Dislikes: floorboards (made me feel like I was riding an old man bike and didn't feel right), floorboards scraping on turns, small rear tire in relation to size of bike (looks weird to me), felt heavier and less agile than LRS, dual shift lever, couldn't find neutral to save my life like you were experiencing, and I feel like the bike is purely a cruiser and doesn't have the versatility the LRS has for different types of riding.
Sorry for the long post but those are my observations so far. Overall, I initially felt more comfortable on the Slim S and I think that it's because it's most similar to my 48, just bigger and better everything, but I worry that I will get bored with the Slim S since I can really only cruise with it vs. the LRS may be a little different now to what I'm used to, but it's something I can turn into what I want and it will meet all of my needs (but at additional expenses of course, which is a factor). Any input to help me make my decision will be greatly appreciated!
Obviously I'm gonna side w/ the LRS, since after we did this test ride, I test rode it one more time, and ended up leaving the dealership with it, haha.
The Slim S was cool, but to me it felt too bulky. The LRS was much more versatile, especially with the endless amount of aftermarket options for the Dyna. Vs the two, to me it's a no brainer, especially for the fact that the LRS is a 2 year production bike and they discontinued the Dyna.
The issues you note on the LRS can easily be solved. Everyone puts an aftermarket exhaust on their bike! Mid controls are easily changed to forward controls, frame already has spots for em even.
You've got a good list between the two, and have test ridden both, so at this point it's up to you, but those are my thoughts. I went Dyna b/c it's a malleable platform, just like my Sportster was.
Right on, thanks for the reply, much appreciated! Maybe I'll run into you in FL one of these days...
Loved the vid I got the best feel for those bikes, and motorcycling, of all the vids I have watched. I'm about to take my licensing course. Thats my birthday present to myself. It's as good an excuse as any to finally do it.Thanks.
Sounds like a great birthday present! Glad you got a good feeling for the bikes from the vid, glad it helped :)
blockhead i personally recently traded my 2012 iron 883 in after owning the iron for 5 years 19,000 miles on her as well. got a letter from harley and wanted to know if i wanted to test ride some bikes, test rode the roadster, street 750, and the lowrider S, and after i rode the lowrider S i had to trade my old bike in to get her, brand new 2017 HD lowrider S with 10 miles 8 of the 10 miles from the test ride lol. bought the bike , purchased new pipes right away the magnaflow bandit exhaust 2 into 2 similar to the vance and hines short shots, but with a deeper tone. and new headlight and powervision tuner. the handbars are perfect as is, same with the intake. put my 1000 miles on in less than two weeks. would have been sooner if the weather wasnt crap. to this day i dont regret trading in my bike for the lowrider, power for days! even more when you put new pipes and a tune. the heat from the exhaust you felt i got the same thing, but once i switched pipes and tuned it so it wasnt running as lean to meet EPA regulations. night and day difference bike ran a whole lot cooler after that. same with the power! cruise control is awesome for highway riding. and the extra gear isnt too shabby either. bike can easily go over 140 mph, after you get rid of the limiter haha, and raise rpm limiter to 6200 rpms. no complaints thus far. did have a tiny leak on the shifter on the primary , but quick fix on that, and no problems since then. smooth sailing already have 2000 miles on her already, and only owned it since june 8th of this year. but only negative i can find is the damn double seat i purchased from harley damn thing sucks on long distance trips hard as a rock worst $400 i spent on a seat i can tell you that, wish i could have found a seat like i did on my iron 883 which i found at a rummage sale for $25 lol solid seat too! oh well hopefully i get lucky again, solo seat is actually quite comfortable with it.
That sporty was the best looking sportster I’ve ever seen I think so clean and classic! Loved that bike!
Hey Blockhead, we had demo days here recently. Go ride the Road King or the Road/Street Glide with the new Milwaukee 8 motor. 107 CI or kitted to 114 CI. Really nice, and quite peppy. The suspension is also all new and unbelievable.
Haha!!! I told you, you'd love that fxdls!! Your reaction to it is priceless. Grab one before they're discontinued!!! 😊✌ ride safe
Definitely a sick bike!
Hey man, I just wanted to say that I love the content you create on your channel. I've been wanting to get into riding and I'll be buying my first bike within the next month (Yamaha XVS650). I'd love a Harley but in Sydney Australia the CC limit for learner bikes is 650 :( Your how to video on learning to ride was super helpful! keep up the great work!
I rode the low rider S recently & the soft tail slim s. Great bikes. But the low rider S really rocked. Like you said.
+Ron L Awesome bike!
haha shoutout for that "great looking bike" xD
'cough' BIKE n' BIRD! 'cough'
So did you have any opinions on the slim? A part of me is super curious about the slim just for the mild fat bob look with a bigger tank.
Love mine
I want them all. Love the sound of a Harley❤..
Make sure you try out the street bob. I think you'll really like that one too and it's the cheapest of the dynas
AlphaMac17 already has he has rode mine
rlm151 Ok ok, yeah I can't wait until I'm finally able to purchase one myself.
AlphaMac17 there great bikea sir
rlm151 I'm curious, did you change the rear suspension? And If you did what size shocks did you get and did you change the front suspension as well?
AlphaMac17 yes it was lowered around 2 inches they are the burley 10.5 rear shocks and front is stock
I went to test ride a road glide. I told the salesman it was great, but I wanted to test ride the street glide and then the road king to compare. He said I would hate them and I would be wasting my time since the road glide was the best. I quickly left the dealership . . .
I love that Softail Slim S! I'm not a fan of the throttle cable elimination, though... I had that shit fail on my car and it cost me over $2,000 to fix it (and no one but the dealership would touch it). No idea what it would cost on a motorcycle, but to me, that stuff is just progress for the sake of progress and doesn't have any value- just my opinion, though.
How did the seat height feel compared to the Sporty? I'm on the short side and I've never been on anything other than my Sporty's- which I've lowered. I keep wanting to test ride some of the Big Twins, but I don't want to deal with the salespeople...
Seat height was great, very comparable to the Sporty. Felt very similar because of the mid controls, a little bit wider, but tons more power!
So how'd the forward foot controls feel vs the iron 883? :) mid vs forward controls basically xD
Fxdls hands down
I put a red thunder on mine and dyno tuned it
Stock 85 hp/105 tq pounds
Tuned 100 hp/120 tq pounds
I swear to you that it becomes a whole different beast with those changes
Also changed the tires, I put commander 2s
On it, it handles so much better than with stock tires
I'm obviously biased with my opinion lol
But I say fxdls for the win
love the low rider s!
Love this video! That tricked out 48 is damn cool, but an iron 1200 conversion would give you the power without having to start again?
So this is where the love for the low rider s started....
Would it be crazy to start out on low rider s?
I have a 2016 FXDLS. I can attest to the ridiculousness!! 👊🇺🇸 Nice video.
Damn. I love my Iron but I sure do miss my Nightster. So much more power!
all 3 are some sick bikes. my personal favorite is the dyna switchback I wish harley would not have done away with it.
I test rode a 2017 Softail Slim-S 110, and it hauled ass! I agree on the 48,it is a nice fun ride and almost a must have in the garage for that quick weekend squirt. I can't wait to ride a Dyna Lowrider S 110. I think you've made up my mind after seeing this vid. Cheers. Oh and a Lowrider S 110 in Australia is like $32,000. I so wish $17,000.
"this was a mistake" haha
that's why I've tried to avoid riding a new road glide with the 107... i love my dyna but I may end up coming home with that road glide haha
that low rider looks sick..... with a bit of work your 883 can ride as fast as that 48 #conversionkit 😎😂😂
Do you know what size those bars are on the 48
I'm torn. I have the 2016 48 and love it but I love the softail slim and the low rider S. I'm not a fan of the slim S though. But if I'm throwing down that many doll hairs I'm gonna have to go with a streetglide unless my girl learns to ride because those bikes are too beautiful to throw a 2up seat and sissy bar on. It's a shame I had to put a 2-up seat on my 48. But it honestly looks pretty bad ass with the speedline bars.
I do hope you spoke trade numbers for your Iron toward a 48 or that Low Rider S because that's where you're heading and why not now!?
Lowrider S is probably the most fun I've ever had on a motorcycle, and the one I rented was an old, busted rental. Just an overengineered funmobile.
Try the fat bob. Love it. With a nice pair of Vance and Hines you will be set!! Won't be disappointed.
I bought my FXDLS last month and I like it a lot. Very good performance bike!
Need a full test ride vid on the 2018 softail slim!
Haha, no wonder i can't get a test drive at my local or nearby Harley Davidson dealer! You are the guy they're always thinks is coming in for a "joy ride".
How do I go about on joining the weekend rides? Awesome channel man!
DM me on Instagram!
Use the heal toe shifter and the upshift won't be so stiff lol. Also you'll never want to ride without it again
just curious if you do go and talk numbers w the guy what they would give you for your bike I also have a 883 heard they dnt account for any of the customization or stuff you put on so curious to see what they offered you thanks
Yeah I know they don't usually factor in aftermarket parts / customizations at all, better off sometimes to go private sale for that reason or revert back to stock if able.
Drinking game idea: every time you hear 'man' or 'dude' in this video, take a shot! How long until you're messed up?!? X-)
Slim in the best looking one.
Blockhead do you by any chance remember the size of the z bars?
Hey brother, I really like that 48! I actually called to see what the price tag on that bike with all those upgrades was and no one has called me back. You by chance remember the price tag on that bike?
That green soft tail looks good...
I had to stop taking test rides when I actually traded in my car to get a second Harley. Ha
Damn, that's dedication, haha
Do you know what kind of bars were on the 48?
I don't care what bike someone rides. They're all cool. I was saying on Bike N' Bird's channel the other day ... I have a collectors mindset. So when someone asks me:
Question: "Which of the two, would you actually sell?"
Answer: "Yes, I'd buy three more bikes"
Huhwot?
LOL
That being said ... if you traded in your Harley after all that work ... ... ... I'd personally come down to Florida and beat your ass. LOL :D Love your Harley ... thing looks siiic
You are to build the "Jay Leno's Garage" of motorcycles. As it has been said, so let it be done !!! LOL
The "Jay Leno's Garage" of motorcycles, lol. I wish! Now accepting donations, haha
BLOCKHEAD
Hey chief... at 0:41 ... you are talking to your friend about joining you in the ride... could you please ask him the name brand of his sunglasses....please ... thanks... by the way ... do you consider low rider better than the slim?
At 8:02 what harley is he riding?
My next bike is definitely the Lower Rider S. Fun facts: twice the power of the 883 and only 100 more pounds? Yes please.
get the low rider s man! do it!!! fucking amazing!
I used to ride a 2006 Suzuki GSX-R 600. I am done with Super Sport as I am 37 years of age. Which Harley is right for me? I am 5'7"" at 150 lbs. I am considering the Iron 1200. What is the next step up from the IRON 1200?
Wojciech Czarniecki Yep, but skip the Sporty and go right for the Slim👌
love this place went in 05 bike week on vacation
dude if you going to upgrade get the Low rider S that is on a different level my friend got one and he let me take a ride and I'm in love is bad ass.
Was a crazy bike!
What kind of bars were on the 48?
if I was to get any of those it would be the 48
So which one are you buying lol
how much did they offer you for the 883?
dam, didnt talk to Darrin - hes the best at that store
Get the 48 man that was a badass looking bike
Definitely a classy bike!
BLOCKHEAD I have a 1999 1200 sportster and they are great because they are light, smaller and fast so you can really romp on them.
Wait.. your dealer is open on Sunday... Lucky.. past noon on Saturday and your waiting until Monday
The sporty was pretty cool.
So I'm curious as to what all these numbers mean. What's the difference between an 883 and a 48? I'd imagine an 883 would be 18×more powerful but obviously that's not the case
883 is the engine size in cc’s. 48 is the model name of that bike bc it has the style of HD bikes from 1948 👍🏼
@@BlockheadMoto I figured that 883 would be CC's based on my 650 being 650 CC's, didn't know about the 48 so that's pretty cool! My initial thought was "There's no way a 48cc bike has that much power" lol
u looking to get the dyna
I have the 2016 Harley 48, it's my favorite bike 🖤💀
What kind of pipes are on the 43?
What that exhaust of 48?
What handlebars are on that 48???
What size bars are those??
Does anyone know what air cleaner is on the 48? With the "1" on it
those bikes should come stock like that and they would sell more i think, i would buy one
Nice LaRue Tactical hat.
Traded my 2015 883 for a 2017 Forty Eight I DO NOT REGRET IT
Christopher Hernandez yeah man, i really enjoyed riding that white 48 that day, first time on a sportster and i loved it. i might consider one for ansecond bike one of these days
nobama it's a fun bike I should've went with that bike first haha
Christopher Hernandez same here mate.... now
I want to add the softtail slim I the garage to give company to my 48
poetx7 that's also my next bike! Good choice man!
poetx7 the Softail Slim has nice lines and a very retro look. You have to be careful , the lean angle isn't the greatest and you'll scrape floorboards barely leaning. Take that into consideration and make sure you get to test ride one. Sexy bike though
why are you uploading at 4 in the morning? and I know its 4 for you too because we're in the same timezone
I schedule the videos. I'm asleep at 4 in the morning! Scheduled early so they're up and ready for the early riser Blockheads ;)
I bought a sportster 1200 about six months ago. I went to the Harley dealership yesterday and I sat on a softail slim and a breakout. Even though they are heavier they felt less top heavy than my sportster. I am really wanting to get one now. I want to trade my sportster in. I think the softail would feel a lot smoother on the highway. Does anyone feel like the softail rides better than the sportster?
That's a nice slim
Love the color scheme on it! OD green / military style ftw
BLOCKHEAD I have a 2015 softail Slim with the 103. It's orange and black. Absolutely love the thing
Nice larue tactical hat
how much would a lowrider like that one typically cost?
They stopped making them in 2017, and they're a 2 year production bike, so they range in cost in the used market at the moment, anywhere from $16k - $22k
Ms.BlockHead #RelationshipGoals
For sure, hehe. I'm a lucky dude!
Call it what you want. But that low rider is a bit scary.
It can be! Just can't let it get away from ya, haha
Does anyone know what bars are on the Softail Slim?
Stopped watching the channel for a bit and was surprised when I heard all the curse words blocked out
