Chad, that truck driver should have waited. Where you were at, he shoukd have seen you in his mirror and waited a second.

I'm 100% Team Chad on "Truckgate!" This is a textbook passing scenario on a two-lane road, and Chad executed flawlessly. Also, Kelsey didn't know what cruise control was last week, got to level up to Chad's level.

As a Commercial Driver I agree with Chad. I was trained to scan 15 seconds ahead and to check all mirrors every 3-5 seconds. It is a Commercial Driver’s job to be aware of what’s going on around their vehicle. IMO this truck driver was being an asshole.

I'm gonna side with Chad about the driving thing. One question about it is why was the trucker trying to get over to the left lane? Was there anyone in front of them?

If your entire job is driving, checking mirrors should be a constant habit, doubly so when changing lanes. Turn signals are the only way to communicate intent, but as someone that rides a motorcycle, I've learned not to trust them either. Not every driver consistently turns them off when they should.

Team Chad on the driving. You should never be causing someone to break by merging, that’s being cut off. If he wasn’t paying enough attention to see you there he shouldn’t be driving a moving house.

Team Chad all the way. When I need to merge lanes and there is a car there, I can't just push them off the road. They have the right of way as the one being there first. He plain and simply didn't see you guys next to him and just moved over without looking to be sure his blind spots were clear. Sorry Kelsey...... 😢

When it comes to the truck story, the safest thing to do would have been to just let the truck over. However, the truck driver was way more in the wrong here. He's driving a WMD. If that truck goes down, a whole lot of people's days are going to be ruined (putting it super mildly). Someone driving a truck that recklessly, even once, has no business behind the wheel. Also, Chad was 100% correct that the truck driver should have been aware of there being no other cars behind Chad's car. I get Where Kelsey is coming from. It seems like she's often a great person to give a reality check, but Chad was not wrong in that situation.

    Okay…
I have worked in transportation and operated heavy equipment most of my adult life. We also take several road trips every year, through multiple states.
Truck drivers are supposed to be extra aware of all traffic on the road with them. Part of being a professional is assessing safety first, shortest vs quickest routes and fuel/mechanical needs. When traveling on two lane roads, especially when delays put trucks behind schedule, can be aggravating. Drivers with experience will stay to the right, even over the edge of the lane, in order to allow regular cars to pass safely. They know a line of slow traffic behind a truck is a recipe for disaster.
Trucks that attempt to pass on a two lane road are being aggressive. Their blind spot is bigger, so avoiding having cars where they’re out of sight should be second nature. Inexperienced operators, lack of dispatchers, shorter travel hours, low pay, and longer trailers have given the industry a bad reputation. Too many new, inexperienced drivers now. More traffic incidents may have created a fear factor on the road.
Driving defensively is safer, however not always possible since idiots do make wild choices. While I expect truckers to make good choices, I don’t trust anyone on the road.
Once a driver-of any vehicle- gets into a second lane to pass, generally it’s best to allow the pass to complete before changing your speed.
If another vehicle forces you to break in order to get passed? They shouldn’t have passed.
I do try to let trucks in when they have their blinker on, mostly because most cars won’t-many people have no idea what it’s like to operate a heavy truck, so they’re not willing to let a slow giant truck in front of them… I HATE not being able to see ahead due to a big rig blocking my view.
    Buuuut…
If you have a nervous passenger, it might be ‘path of least resistance’ to just plan on extra time to slow cruise on road trips (good tunes makes it easier).
    Aaaaannnd…
When the main driver in a couple has not been in accidents nor received tickets for reckless driving, maybe focus work on trusting their skills and less on your feelings of fear and being out of control. Being a passenger can be hard for some. I still have to focus on playing games on my phone when my hubby drives-I’m a control freak about driving (driving is both of our jobs), and have experienced horrible accidents due to others poor choices in the drivers seat. However, logically I trust my husbands skills driving, emotionally I’m always working on not bracing for impact-insulting to him.
Sadly we have had to talk about me not making startling or fear based noises; communicating with words is more effective and actually helpful to the driver. Squealing only communicates fear or danger without giving a direction for danger-what reaction can a driver have if they don’t know where/what danger is coming at the car? Use your words. Breathe. Focus on a game or a song or a book if your insecurities endanger the ride. Distractions, especially while operating a vehicle, can cause accidents.
EVERY driver should be situationally aware. Not just of the cars in your immediate vicinity, ahead to the horizon, to both sides, all lanes, and behind you. Anticipate others behaviors, it’s all relative. Communicate with blinkers, but assume this is ignored.
    Peace on you two.
Hope you feel better soon Chad🤧

As a former truck driver and fellow idealist regarding the flow of traffic, I wholeheartedly agree with Chad's choices in your "near death experience". In fact, the best reasoning was when Chad explained that it is irrelevant as to how long the trucker's blinker was on. In truck driving, there's an acronym SMOG= Signal, mirror, over the shoulder (look,) Go. The driver simply didn't do his/her job well, and while I'm sure it was plenty terrifying for young Kelsey; managing the distance to impact of a merging vehicle from actually resulting in impact, is quite manageable for any competent male driver. Sorry you got scared for a moment, sugar-nips... It'll be okay. Let's just take a deep breath, be grateful that it didn't go south, and maybe not go building a criminal profile or pattern of road raging irresponsibility.

If I want to merge into a lane, it's my job to safely move into that lane. If my merge requires a driver (that is already in that lane) to brake, then *I* am doing it wrong. That truck driver is in the wrong.

  • @snowmanap

I’m just throwing this out there but I think throwing away the family you already have, just because someone doesn’t wanna add to it, sounds insane to me. That’s also kinda bogus to be like “put another baby in me or I’m leaving with our other child, enjoy split custody and thanks for the child support payments.” That’s just my 2 cents nobody asked for 🤷🏻‍♂️

I think the truck driver was in the wrong. You shouldn’t have to brake for someone to change lanes unless the flow of traffic doesn’t give them a choice or it’s obvious you are letting them in front of you. I’m not an aggressive driver but try to be a decisive one.

100% for chad on this. If a vehicle enters your lane and causes you to adjust your speed in any manor, they by definition, didn't have legal standing to do so. Also yes that driver can and SHOULD be checking mirrors to find opportunity to come over just like every other driver. Could you have let him in? Sure but that's up to you to be nice, the law says you sure don't have to.

After listening to this one for 2nd time-I laughed over quite a bit of the dialog-great episode!
When you’re right, you are right… no need to be arrogant tho lol.
Information is usually received better when you’re not making the listener feel ‘less than’ or dumb. Maybe consider others points of view without comment some times, corrections are not required unless there’s danger involved-right?
It can turn into a battle of right vs wrong or good vs bad or being right means you’ve won. Winners and losers in relationships usually leads to divorce.
It’s not a contest. Y’all are on the same team, why approach it like adversaries? Do you want or need so badly to be the winner that you’d be willing to lose in the end?
I’ve found that there’s often a disconnect in this kind of communication. Everyone’s points of view are valuable, just maybe a person who feels shut down all the time ends up losing their desire to explain their own views. Something to consider?🤗

His driving skills saved your lives. :) It sounds like the truck driver had issues and did not yeild to Chad's right of way. Chad could have been a "nice" guy and let a truck driver who had his blinker on over to be "nice", but that being said we do not have a system of laws that govern trafic that relies on people being nice. I will go so far to say that Kelsy should have Chad's back and be mad at the truck driver for not obeying the law.

Chad is the master of gaslighting. So if the semi had his left blinker on when would he have left that on? That doesn't make sense, so the logical thing is that he is actually moving over. Why would you try sneaking in at that point. I love Chad's stand-up but listening to him here he's very narcissistic and gaslights Kelsey all the time.
