Nirvana - Polly (Guitar Cover)

- One of Nirvana's first forays into the more sinister side of social commentary, "Polly" was based on a real-life case in which serial rapist Gerald Friend tortured and sexually assaulted a 14-year-old girl, who then outsmarted and escaped him by convincing him that she enjoyed it. Written from the eerie perspective of the disturbed perpetrator, both versions convey the song's ominous nature -- whether soft and sludgy on Nevermind or, in "(New Wave) Polly," frenetic and unforgiving. Though "Polly" is disturbing, it reflects Cobain's dual fascination with the macabre and extremely sensitive nature, as well as his interest in feminism under the tutelage of his ex-girlfriend, Bikini Kill's Tobi Vail. Though it's certainly not a protest song, it deftly delves into the mind of a sicko, like a succinct Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, and is an example of the thoughtful depths Cobain was willing to plumb.
Tuning: Standard
Equipment: 1967 Stella Harmony(exact same as Kurt had)
Lyrics: Polly wants a cracker
I think I should get off her first
I think she wants some water
To put out the blow torch
Isn't me, have a seed
Let me clip your dirty wings
Let me take a ride, cut yourself
Want some help, please myself
Got some rope, you have been told
Promise you, I have been true
Let me take a ride, cut yourself
Want some help, please myself
Polly wants a cracker
Maybe she would like some food
She asked me to untie her
A chase would be nice for a few
Isn't me, have a seed
Let me clip dirty wings
Let me take a ride, cut yourself
Want some help, please myself
Got some rope, you have been told
Promise you, I have been true
Let me take a ride, cut yourself
Want some help, please myself
Polly said
Polly says her back hurts
She's just as bored as me
She caught me off my guard
Amazes me the will of instinct
Isn't me, have a seed
Let me clip dirty wings
Let me take a ride, cut yourself
Want some help, please myself
Got some rope, you have been told
Promise you, I have been true
Let me take a ride, cut yourself
Want some help, please myself

I fear no headstock, but that one, that one scares me
Haha
Tomnedreb btw good cover!
Panzer 4 but in minecraft on that one idk, 12 but on a normal one 6
It’s called a 12 string. There are 2 strings that are both very close together and they sound really cool.
@@immodium4586 wonder if trying to play this on 12 strings would be in anyway practical. probably not but hey lol
I read that Kurt found a five string stella guitar in a pawn shop for about $20. Butch Vig also stated that the guitar had almost no tone because Kurt didn't even bother changing the strings! How awesome is that
it was probably the twelve string he has in here - kurt only left five strings on.
@@spencerbaker7972 You are right, it was the exact same model as I have.
It was $30
Wow... Smells like talent.
Smells like skill, hard work and practice
He litterally took off the High E string for this, what a legend
Actually no, it only had 5 strings on it and he didn’t bother to change the strings (even though they had almost no tone and were likely well over a decade old)
@@KingRiverVlogs he means the guy in the vid
@@jackdawson5490 now that I look back on it you are correct, I don’t know why I put that!
@@KingRiverVlogs can u both just shut up?
he wanted to recreate the exact guitar kurt had and kurt’s only had 5

Please I need the tabs for your Sappy cover
man thanks for this. your dedication to nirvana is admirable. love the background you present followed by song lyrics. love this songs ominously dry sound.
@Jason Krikava Stain was actually not my first cover, Mr Moustache was the first on as it was my fav Nirvana song for many years, but I re-did it and deleted the first one. I also had a few others that I did before Stain which also was deleted. This was back in September 2011.
@Jason Krikava Well, as it was my first cover, I didn't think about light and angle and the sound was not as good. I also was standing and rocking around on the floor, so hard for people to learn the song from those early vids..
@Jason Krikava Can't really remember, but Lithium was one of them.
Thank you for another video and for keeping Kurt’s music alive.
sheaden jams me and u almost have the same profile pic
I literally can't differentiate between your guitar and the original. That's scary. Props to you.
This sounds like the original, was it also played with 5 strings?
Yes, it was.
The high E isn't used at all
The same kurt had. It sounds the same
sounds as good as the original.
I love that sunburst to death! I have my own 6 string Stella from about '71, they really are secretly large and foreboding. Much love, Tom!
some guy Well then if you have a six string it must look pretty funny with 12 tuning stubs
@@kj4ilk Ha, I wish. I've spotted a few 12 string Stellas but they all fetch some serious prices, so I've settled for half the stubs. Definitely worth the 60$ though, I sure as hell wouldn't buy one for the hundreds the 12s ask for!
I’m back for another Nirvana cover man still sounds Great
i really think this song has a special nostalgic sound. i remember listening to a little nirvana in middle school but not really appreciating the band until i started playing guitar in college and nirvana became one of my favorite bands alongside blind melon and Alice in chains.
Finally Tom!!
One of my favorite songs,
Thank you for your amazing covers.
Flawless cover as always. Love it !
hey, I've been a sucker for this channel for a long time and I listen to your covers every single day basically lol
I love this song! And I just learned about the 5 string guitar story! I think that's really cool! Good job covering this as precise as possible!
Great playing! I can remember learning all this nirvana stuff on guitar in the mid 90tis without internet..only guitartab books of their official records..after school for hours..that was an awesome time! No Computer or phones needed! Cheers!
I learned from mostly watching old vhs tapes back then. I remember learning about a girl by watching myv unlugged over and over.. haha
@@Tomnedreb yeah you are right. i forgot mtv unplugged vhs and Live and loud in seattle self recorded at mtv
Love acoustic Nirvana! As always, Tom, great cover!
just saw and enjoyed this video and this song seems easy to play which i will give an attempt and i also started to see the rest of your channel which is all nirvana which is sick man
Smashed it as always! Btw your new "Come as You Are" cover is 100% Flawless! & It's MAD how you play so much Nirvana! Much appreciation 4 all your posts coz I've learnt a fair bit from watching you play, ur now da BEST Nirvana cover Artist on all of YT!

Easy buddy everyone knows what it’s about. Literally the first post in the comment section.

Only 5 strings too, the attention to detail is 10/10. Love this channel
Love your guitar!
you are amazing, I learned to play some nirvana songs watching videos of you
great covers dude =)
Hey. I just discovered your channel and I love it!!!
fantastic cover❤️
This guitar looks like John Lennon's first gutar, back when he was a teenager....
Sort of, but johns guitar didnt have a pickguard
Have you tried to replicate the smart sessions in bloom? It sounds a lot darker
Not yet, but I probably will. Having said that, I will do live version of In Bloom before that.
the fact he actually got a stella guitar and took of the high e string is impressive props to u
Can't wait for your next video
Perfect sound
I don’t care what anyone says no guitar can ever replicate the tone in Polly and Something In The Way like a good old Stella Harmony what a beautiful guitar
Great job bro
Having only five strings was a nice touch
Very nice touch with the 12 String Stella....Leadbelly and Kurt would be proud:)
This is what I’ve been looking for
Thanks tom
Another great cover!
Thanks man, and thanks for following me and commenting on all my videos!
@@Tomnedreb No problem, I enjoy your videos very much. I always look forward to them

Fantastic 👍👍👍Really Cool
It sounds 1:1 to original, good job! I'm wondering from where all of your impressive Kurt staff came from.
Jesus i thought it was you singing for a second and i was so shocked ahaha
Nice Stella!
Love the 12 string with only 5 strings
such a sad song
When you play a nirvana song Kurt smiles at you from up above
Very good
I love it by any chance are you going to upload a tutorial or lesson of this song that will be awesome but vid I love nirvana🤘❤️
I’ve learned to correctly play at least 20 nirvana songs from you
Wow, it really sounds like Kurt Cobain sings over your masterful guitar playing! Amazing!
would love to see your Hairspray Queen take) seems reasonably hard to play especially those improv solos)
6 strings on a 12 string guitar, yes you are a monster
5
@@Tomnedreb Especially
@@oezZz That's how Kurt had it.
Great cover!, What's up with that scary headstock and why does it have so many tuners?
Hey Tom, can you do a cover of opinion with the Stella?
Trying to sing and play, wish me luck guys. If I make it, I will post cover!
Is it me haven’t seen nirvana live and I regret it!! :-(
Wow I love the stellas what strings did you use (brand and gauge)
This new Kurt Cobain
Chillll😳
I stride to become good at guitar as you are. How long did it take you? Also great cover as always🤘
Been playing on and off for about ten years before I started this channel.
Mano? Q coisa linda(◍•ᴗ•◍)❤
👏👏👏
I would like to ask. Why are you so much on Nirvana ? Was it your everything before Kurt died ?
Yes, I've been a true Nirvana freak since 1991.
@@Tomnedreb Okay thanks. I like Nirvana. And i'm happy to say that I know how to play Smells Like Teen Spirit, even if I thought that it was hard. But you, you know all their songs ! This is incredible ! You're a hardcore fan ! Nice video by the way !
At first I thought you were singing and I was like wow this dude sounds exactly like Kurt
LOL, well I wish I had his voice. It's so great..
Hey nice cover just a quick question were can you get a guitar like that
Try ebay, but thay are hard to find..
Hey Tom good re do, you see the remastered unplugged what the Nirvana channel upload today?

Nice guitar
Nice
He plays to the soundtrack, and singing too
12-string Stella??? The most blow-mind cover. Must have this guitar to play Polly
I love you.
And a guitar very similar to lead bellys, guitar , I have a 1962 stella , u set it up six string it looks great video, that was neat kurt listened to old old blues artists he was different and unique. ..
