While my thoughts go out to the victims of this senseless act of violence, I know the gun control nuts are going to come out of the woodwork again over this. You know democrats never waste a good tragedy. A firearm is tool, it is incapable of acting of it's own volition, it is the person possessing it. When are people going to stop vilifying the tool and address the real cause of the problem - mental illness? That is the root cause of these tragedies, not the tool. Obviously, the shooter had more than a few screws loose to think this was the answer to whatever their issue was. This person was obviously committed to doing this, the maps, manifesto and other writings are proof positive of this fact. Whether it was a gun, a sling shot or a butter knife, this person was going to wreak havoc. Should we ban butter knives too because someone might use that as their tool of choice?

yes, absolutely, lets ban the guns and not ban the butterknifes. don't pretend to seriously suggest that we would have the amount of deaths that we've had from mass shootings if all those killers were only armed with butterknives. we wouldn't have a single death. the gun as a tool enables killing like no other, certain guns more than others, and taking it out of the reach of, yes, mentally ill people with intent to harm would obviously help reduce the deaths we are seeing.
as for addressing mental health, let's do it. but i grew up around the crowd who defends gun rights heavily and they're not the crowd who's actually really interested in addressing mental health and providing support for it. often they don't even believe in the science behind it or the psychology, and people with mental health issues are treated as crazy people who are unlike us-- as people who can't be helped.
people who kill other people like this may have some biological predisposition to doing so, but they also, as in the case of serial killers, have deep psychological traumas that lead them to do these things (not an excuse, obviously). meanwhile, the same people saying we should "address the mental illness" instead of implementing gun control are the ones who are going to flatten the character of the killer into something like "this person was always a killer, nothing in our society impacted them to be this way, and we can't do anything about it." i'd like the see a modicum of restriction of the tools of mass murder, along with SERIOUS, compassionate mental health support for students before they go to these dark places.
