- Join us for a rainy day in Paris as National Gallery Educator, Belle Smith, introduces us to 'The Umbrellas' by the French artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir. It was presented at an Impressionist exhibition in New York in 1886.
Immerse yourself in the crowd beneath their brollies. Observe how their hands and feet intertwine in the composition of bright oranges, blues and greens.
What do you think the expressions of the young woman and little girl, looking out at us from the picture, are saying? And why do you think there are two different styles of women’s clothes in the picture, alert as Renoir was to women’s fashions of the day?
Pierre-Auguste Renoir's 'The Umbrellas' is currently on loan to Leicester Museum & Art Gallery.

I genuinely appreciate having someone draw my attention to the small details of a painting that my eye would simply travel over without much notice. And I must say, Belle has such a lovely voice. I could listen to her all day long.
It's so nice to have someone explain to you the different parts of the painting that you would overlook. There is a lot going on in it and the more you look the more you notice something you hadn't seen before. It's so lovely to have someone explain in simple terms the painting and see what it used to look like before under the layers of paint.
Everytime I see one of your art videos, I'm more and more thankful to platforms such as RUclips.

At the National Gallery in DC, they have Renoir's "Little Girl with a Watering Can" which looks like the same little girl as the younger girl in this painting. Very similar soft painting style, and she's wearing a dress that matches the coat seen here. I wonder who she was?

We notice that the face of the repainted girl has changed. Could it be possible that he repainted the shop girl to match someone that he med later?
In the x-ray the shop girls face is radically different. One wonders if her face was also a source for change.
