@@european-reacts Or you might try to break up your visit to different regions, Northeast, Southeast/Southern, West Coast, Texas/Southwest, Rocky Mtn States, Plains States, etc. The US is just too expansive to really appreciate in one trip. Definitely immerse yourself in whatever you do to get the flavor of the region. I would plan my trip around the National and State Parks because I enjoy nature and natural phenomena, and this is a good place to start. But, if cities are your thing, you could do that instead.

The only place it wasn't my level of nice was NYC, but the things rejected practical reasons why. Where I'm from hold open doors. I accidentally did it the 1x in NYC out of habit. The 11th person kindly, "TY, but you have to let it go, or you'll be here all day." I joked with my kids recently, and now we know how NYC doormen are born. Midwesterns that just don't leave out of politeness. They are polite by being efficient.

@@tidritblag9877 I'm from Ohio. I typically detest large cities, but to say people aren't nice simply isn't true. There are awful people to be found many places even in suburbs and the country. I'm simply trying to point out through my anedoct is what is nice in different areas differs. People in NYC if they behave as I do like when I held the door for people in NYC would prevent you from doing what you need to. So New Yorkers being very direct skipping nicities is actually done as a courtesy. Now if they were where I live more than a month and not assimilate, yes argument they are rude. Been to TN all over if you have directions like you do in TN people would end up having precious time stripped of them and nothing would get done. It is why I HATED NY, because I like spending time with even strangers. A kind word, holding a door, once held an umbrella for a elderly couple going to their car (sudden storm),but it doesn't mean zi jack awareness that like my NYC mistake my behaviors would be a detriment in that environment, because of you treated everyone like that you'd have zero time simply due to #'s.

@@clairruckman7674 How could not saying thank you when someone holds the door for you be a courtesy? It’s downright rude. It’s lack of good upbringing. I suppose not holding the door for others is also a courtesy in New York. I thought people in downtown Chicago were rude until I went to New York City. I live in Illinois, and the rest of the state isn’t rude. My guess is the rest of the state of New York isn’t either.

The bridge from Cincinnati to Kentucky is literal Hell on earth and I would wish that on my worst enemy. Rest of my state minus awful 3C love it. Living in large cities is only done by many, because little other choice for work like I'm sure anywhere in the world. Tokyo awful and even in video Shibuyu crossing gives me anxiety. It was why when I sold cars first time record grossed first car I sold, and sold one less than a guy doing it 26 years. Wild idea just be nice to people. Not because you are required to, or it gives you sales, but just on the point of do you like people treating you like garbage? No? Then why would you approach anyone that way? Like you stated hiring should be done with people who hold service personalities. For us with it, it isn't a chore, or anything above to doing what we already do in life. Why would you hire someone with outright contempt/ disdain of those your company makes money off of? That'd be bizarre.

The idea that NY is rude is one of those misconceptions as well. The south has 'southern hospitality', but it's really just a cultural difference. NY isn't rude, it's just received differently. As a NY'er, I have to put in work to accept southern hospitality as being nice instead of overly and overtly fake. But at least I recognize that it's just me, and my culture being different from theirs. 🤷‍♂️

That's not what she said. She said SOME people are sensitive and unable to deal well with humor, which is probably true everyplace you go in this world so it's not a slight against Americans. She simply meant be careful and considerate in what you say because it you think you're being funny others might not agree, and it becomes even more complicated when the cultures of different areas in the US come into play. The same is true of Americans who go to other countries and say something that would probably be taken as funny by another American but might be at the very least not funny and at the worst offensive to the people in that other country. Saying things like that is actually the most common reason people in other countries get a poor impression of Americans.

New Yorkers are very direct and they get to the point. It can come off as rude or blunt. That's not the intention, but I think it results from the crowded streets. It's hard to get places so everyone wants to take care of business and get moving.
This depends on where you're from and who you're talking to. The younger the American, the more sensitive they are to the feelings of others and derogatory terms. Older Americans are a little less so, on average our humor can be more black and blue.
10% is what a cheapskate tips. 25% is a very generous tip. I generally tip a minimum of $5, or 20% if it would be more than $5.
Waiters and waitresses are extra nice for tips. People think Americans are nice, but we don't see it that way. There's a cultural thing to acknowledge people you pass by, especially in tight spaces like doorways. But not in a public restroom or an elevator... Not sure why we don't talk in the elevator but don't unless you really know the person you're with.
There were neighborhoods back in the day that had lots of gang activity and massive crime. Compton is one. The danger of these neighborhoods, especially today, is highly overrated. Mostly race-related. I've walked through Compton. I've stayed at a hotel in Inglewood. If you respect the locals, they generally don't mess with you.
Fast food for lunch. Get some real cooking from local restaurants to really experience what our food is like. Every state has some amazing local restaurants.
It's always interesting that people from other places still see all the possibilities available in the US, and so many of us think the American dream is dead.

I never heard of people being polite or nice because of guns. and I have lived in TX and have family there. Its just southern hospitality. I dont ever think about if someone has a gun or not.... it never crosses my mind tbh lol. I think at most is you might 2nd guess committing a crime in TX like robbing someone or their home because they might have a gun lol.
there are high crime areas you might want to avoid. You can drive through them. But even in the crime areas its low chance that something bad would happen to you. Its just typically best to avoid just in case walking around them late at night. You can just ask people which places to avoid they will tell you. but otherwise you should be fine wondering around America. There are places that are perfect for that. if you want to walk about there are markets/ town centers/ and outdoor shopping areas you are free to explore safely. And lots of American enjoy driving around different areas for scenery.

I grew up in New York City. It's not that New Yorkers are angry or rude, it's that one of the highest values in our culture is time, and one of the worst things you can do to someone is waste their time. There's very little smalltalk; if we don't know you, we don't know enough to have anything to say to you beyond the purpose for the immediate interaction. This frequently is interpreted as rudeness b/c in many other cultures, including many American cultures, a certain amount of smalltalk or smiling is expected. You have to remember that when a New Yorker in a store gets through serving you quickly, they are respecting you by not taking up a lot of your time (or the time of the person waiting after you). If you go to New York with this framework, you'll find NYers are actually very respectful-it's just that our forms of respect don't include stuff we consider superficial.

And not just LA; a similar tale can be told about many American cities and suburbanites. None of that is meant to deny that there are problems with elevated crime rates in some neighborhoods. Rather, I’m just saying that the “Don’t go there! You will die!” stories that some ignorant suburbanites feel compelled to tell every tourist they encounter are not exactly factual. It sounds like Dianne ran into some of those sorts and got an earful - which she promptly believed and took to be completely true in her own inimitable way.

I've worked in Bars and Restaurants for my entire adult life. Standard tipping for Poor-Okay service in a sit down restaurant is 10-14%. Good service 15-19%. Great service is 20% and up. $1-2 for a beer or a drink at the bar or for a coffee at the coffee shop. A ToGo/Takeout food order should be about 10%. All the places that start at 20% and up are actually offensive to me, even as a service industry professional. Made my own salad at a salad bar the other day and at the register, the tip option was 20%, 30% and 40%. I made my own food and swiped my own card. You want a 40% tip for turning the payment tablet around!? You don't tip if they didn't do anything for you. I also understand the fascination with some of the fast food options we have, but I highly recommend NEVER eating fast food. We have so many incredible, real restaurants to try that will absolutely destroy anything you can eat at a fast food or chain restaurant.

If you leave a tip over 20 percent, its generally because 1) your service was amazing or 2) you are feeling very generous or you have money to burn. 15-20 percent is considered standard for a waiter in a restaurant. I will also tip my barber or hairdresser if they engaged in good conversation or were friendly. I waited tables for a living when I was younger, and I would hate it when I got a party of non-Americans because I knew that I was going to get a low tip or no tip at all. Life in New York, as well as other northeastern cities such as Boston and Philadelphia moves at a faster pace than the rest of the country (especially the South and West) so people adapted a more direct communication style. If you come from an area where social decorum dictates you remain polite always it may come off as rude. It’s certainly not intentionally rude. On the flip side of that coin though, it’s extremely frustrating for northeastern Americans when they travel and people won’t give them an honest answer if the answer may be seen as rude. I know I’d rather have someone tell me to go F myself rather than the backhanded southern expression “Bless your heart.”

Andre, I’ve become disappointed with some of Diane’s reactions recently, she’s been spending a lot of time repeating stereotypes even though she says she’s trying to clear them up. I guess we need to remember this is her opinion and not necessarily the same experience others would have. Also not all store personnel work on commission, maybe true of high end stores, friendliness is part of our culture, as is good customer service in most places and they’re not just doing it for tips.
Why is she so obsessed with guns? The police have them and families who are hunters usually teach their children at an appropriate age how to safely use and store guns. Even people who are recreational gun users either teach their children or have them take classes. My son took the NRA gun safety course and his dad taught him how to use the various types at a local gun range.
Note that homeless statistics are usually from a count down on one night. That number can easily change when outreach groups have contacted them and they’ve agreed to go to a shelter or they’re placed in low income housing. Some refuse going to a shelter because they won’t be able to drink or use drugs, their addiction overrides their common sense. She might be surprised to know that the highest rates for lifetime literal homelessness were found in the UK (7.7%) and United States (6.2%), with the lowest rate in Germany (2.4%), and intermediate rates in Italy (4.0%) and Belgium (3.4%) as of Jan 13, 2024.

In both Ireland and the UK (of which Ireland was originally a part of before 1921) the regular police do not carry guns, only special units are armed, which is why people from the UK and Ireland are so fascinated when they come to the US and find guns for sale in stores and that even as visitors they can go shooting at gun ranges. Tipping is 15-20% (NOT 10%!) because people who work at jobs where they earn tips are paid less than the hourly minimum wage, so they depend on tips to make a living and pay their bills and put food on the table. Logic says this is nuts - that they should be paid a reasonable hourly wage like in everyone else so tipping would not be necessary (more like Europe), but the result would be that restaurant costs would shoot way up and that would be passed on to the consumer by the menu prices also shooting way up. It probably doesn't occur to many American travelers that might be the reason menu prices are frequently higher in the UK and Europe. You cannot wander around American cities as a visitor because you might very well wander unknowingly into a high-crime area, as Diane is describing she did when she was in Los Angeles and wandered into Compton. You will only find biscuits and gravy on the menu in the South, but fluffy biscuits covered with sausage gravy is one of God's own comfort foods. YUM.

there are high crime areas and somewhat 'segregated' areas (self segregated) where some races aren't welcomed and may even be attacked. so you need to know where these places are so you don't go there. every moderately sized city will have these areas. the best thing to do is make contacts ahead of your visit and arrange for those contact in each town or city you plan of visiting to meet up with you and ensure that you stay in areas that are less likely to cause problems (truthfully, anywhere can end up being a problem if a crazy person decided to do something awful there, but some areas or more safe than others). these contacts can be your 'tour guide' for that town or city while you're visiting that place. it will be a tremendous help first off, and they can recommend good places to eat and sleep. and even point out any local attractions. this way you are not burdened with trying to fill your trip with things to do by yourself without knowing anything about that area....

We know we have a lot of similarities from one American to another but it is better to group us up into regions like new england, the south, pacific northwest and so on.
Since you have been enjoying American food videos, you should check out Hawaiian food. They have their own unique style, plus you can do a luau.

She's not kidding about the continent concept. Here in Florida, we could be five separate states based on culture. One fellow author was ahocked when both his wife and I agreed he was not cinsidered a "Floridian" by "true Floridian" because he moved to Florida rather than being a native of Florida. He was even more shocked when his wife and I admitted that we don't see each other the same way because she and I are from drastically different areas of the state. Then, he got blown away at our disdain for New Yorker transplants...both of us saying "Don't New York our Florida." Then again, he was Californian by birth. The feelings issue os also true. In the South we say and do things that are offensive to others. Frankly, I never saw racism ever in my life to the degree I saw it in Chicago. It seems like there are groups everywhere looking to get offended. Some try to tip-toe and others just don't worry about it and say what they wish. Generally speaking, I believe if you try to treat people with respect that most will respond in-kind. The gun culture was pretty spot on. In Florida, I can shoot anyone threatening with deadly force and not have to worry about being charged. When I am hunting of fishing, I can openly carry a gun. It does help to keep people honest. I personally hate tipping culture...it's stupid. Customers should not be expecred to subsidize a business's payroll. It should be illegal for businesses to be allowed to pay workers less than minimum wage just because tips are expected. Personally, I hate fast food. The grouping issue is really from an idea of context and understanding. Sadly, it creates biases and fallacies of thoughts and perceptions. I do like the bloopers at the end.

Simple (personal) breakdown of tipping in America. 10% = not very happy with the service, but you don't want to be rude. 15-20% is the standard tip. 20% if the meal is reasonably priced and/or you're particularly happy with the service. 15% if the meal is pricey. 25% if you're feeling blown away by the service. In cities you tip for all kinds of things. For most of America, tipping is restricted to restaurants/diners.
Interestingly, on my trip to Scotland in 2012, I found the meal prices to be very high. But once I accounted for the 20% tip (my Scotish server didn't expect), the prices between Scotland and America were about the same.

I use to live in NYC many decades ago, and have traveled there many times since. My impression is that they are a lot more curt there than elsewhere. This may be because a LOT of foreigners come thru NYC, whether just vacationing or moving to the US. I agree with you on her comment about being careful what you say, unless you get into politics, or religion in very religious states. Her comments about guns is just utter BS. You will almost never see a gun, other than on a law officer. But her comment about the topic of gun ownership is a fairly real issue, with those against and those that are for guns. I have lived here all of my adult life, and have never seen a non law officer with a gun, other than at the gun range or where they sell guns. I am a gun owner myself, so much so, that I use to quick draw (western style holster on the leg) with my 1965 Ruger revolver (6 shooter). Tipping is a non issue, so her comment is simply because she is not use to it at all. Also, the normal tip is 15%, and not 20% or 25%. It may be expected to be higher in the very expensive restaurants. There is no tipping when there is no service, such as fast food places, or when you just pickup the food. I think her point about not being able to just walk around is more about that it is so far between places, and not so much a safety issue, although the safety issue does exist to some degree, especially in the really big cities in certain areas. We eat fast food maybe 2-3 times a month. About 1 year ago my wife and I went to McDonald's and each had a Quarter ponder (their best burger), large fries, and a soda, and it cost $30! We have not been back since! In-N-Out costs just $16, but while their fries are good, no on makes fries like McDonald's.

Mr. Portugal, I was born and raised in NYC. It's an expensive and difficult place to live. And it's crowded besides. Alot of visitors don't take into consideration that, they may be on vacation, but the majority of New Yorkers aren't. If I've only got an half hour lunch break, I'm not going to spend 15 minutes of it chatting up a foreigner. I've got to leave the building I work in, buy and eat lunch-than get back to the office before that half hour runs out. If I'm not working I can be more generous with my time and attention. Nobody wants to be penalized by their bosses. We're not really rude, more often than not we're simply pressed for time. Once again, we're not the ones on vacation.

I don't find it difficult to believe that she may have had problems.
Tips are NOT required. They are suggested and help the workers. If anyone demands that you tip them, talk to their manager.
Guns are in many places, but I have only seen them on police officers and the occasional hunter out hunting.
I believe people in the South, East, North and West are nice people. You may think someone is not friendly by their facial expression, but a smile almost always gets a smile back. I worked as a secretary in the physical therapy department and loved meeting the people that came in. You can never tell what might make a person unfriendly. It could be pain or maybe an illness. People are people and we need each other.

Well, I’m not going to spend anymore time listening to this young lady. Let me say this before I go. On my visit to Ireland last year, one of my first encounters with its people was with an elderly man on a sidewalk in Dublin who, as he approached me straight on, grumbled, “Get outta me way, ye bastids!” He gave me a good laugh and, thank goodness, did not cause me to think that his behavior was representative of Irish people at large.

From small animal guns (for squirrel or rabbits) to large animal guns ( for elk or bear) there are different hunting seasons for different types of guns(like black powder, rifles, high powered - for long distance, there is even a season for bow and crossbow hunting), pistol for home security. I’m 65 been around them my whole life but never fired or cleaned one. If my brother dies they are up for grabs and what no one wants will go to the police.

Hey Andre! please read this, I know it’s long but I feel it’s important. I love your channel, but there’s something I’ve wanted to say about Dianne (I apologize if that’s not the right spelling of her name). Now this is all my opinion. But I think that you shouldn’t react to her channel anymore, and what I’m about to say isn’t meant to be an attack on her or her character, however creators (or even some personality types) like Dianne tend to base their experiences off as fact, and then tell their findings for anyone who is not a part of the topic/ lifestyle/ country at hand, despite the fact that she has never lived here, nor does she have our nationality. I personally believe that it’s insulting to have a person/ creator who is not American, nor ever lived in America for certain periods of time, dictating (for lack of a better term/ word) to the world things she presumes Americans as a whole do as fact, when in reality she’s not done more than temporary stays. America is far bigger and more diverse than where she is from in lots of different ways, (and yes I don’t dispute that we as a country we do have similarities, but in those similarities there are exceptions), and for her to convey her experiences off as fact, is very immoral.

Nobody in our area would burglarize our home because they know everyone is armed, (hunting huge here), but if we were in a situation that we needed police, by the time they get to us it’s too late! There is very little crime in Lake Mississippi.

But everywhere I went, the people were polite and friendly. I don't know about anywhere else in New York, but I had a good experience the first time I went. That was also back in 2001. Things are probably quite different now I suppose.
