Labelling yourself as the "creator" wields a lot power, the simple fact you have the ability to determine what is correct and incorrect. I can see why some OGs were pretty pissed when Sam said he was the creator of the dance as it dismisses their history.
Take this as a generalisation from a non US person who got swept up by the global EB train in the 2000s. So during the global popping resurgence in the late 90s and early 2000s the EBs was the first group that was able to spread their history/dance to the world (travels, dvds, websites etc). An unintentional consequence of being the only group spreading their dance is that "their way" became "the way" and so if you are not doing their way then "you're not popping". Slick Dogg and Waveomatic (RIP) was the first few people (that i noticed) to really question and push back against the "EB narrative" at a global level. Eventually the other OGs started to jump on the internet, social media, forums etc to finally have their history and stories told. Sure there was a bit of resistance at first but as more and more people started acknowledging their history and people repping non EB styles at high level that eventually helped shift the global mindset to what it is today.
I feel like in today's global climate, the appreciation of all styles (of popping) is relatively more balanced which is an indication of the community recognising the other groups and styles that help contribute to the rich history of the dance. While the EB approach is still quite popular, it is a recognition to the EBs for keeping the dance alive and spreading it internationally.
Appreciate Bryce's efforts for documenting the Bay Area history and making it easily accessible, cus I know there was a lot knowledge bombs that were dropped during the forum era of the internet that is now been lost or scattered.
Keep up the good work guys!
