    This is literally how fancy restaurants do it. Cheap ingredients, but you’re paying for the execution and the time spent to make it.

    • @B_27
      @B_27 3 года назад +515

      You obviously haven't been to a fine dining restaurant. Yes, you pay for the execution but you also pay for premium quality ingredients, not whatever crap is used in these frozen cheesecakes.

      @@B_27 "You've obviously never paid ridiculous prices for food that can be made at home with less expensive ingredients and taste just as good because most fine dining is about the atmosphere." Is it frozen cheesecakes? Naw, but if you're not in a place where everyone is wearing a suit and there's a small orchestra, rest assured the ingredients were not flown in totally fresh that morning from whatever remote location contains them. They're frozen, shipped like anything else, and you're mostly paying for a chef that could take two slices of bread and some cheese and make something that blows you down while you'd be lucky to whip up a grilled cheese.

    • @B_27
      @B_27 3 года назад +277

      Nekufan1000000 it sounds like you’ve had some bad dinning experiences. I can assure you there are plenty of chef’s that pride themselves in serving fresh and local ingredients. I guess we see value in different things. Enjoy your grilled cheese 😆

    I am a total believer that the way something looks makes I taste better... but! I also think that your family preferring the fancy playing may also have to do with the textural changes you’ve made in each plating. Making elements of the dish crispier or chewier or fluffier, as you did, adds more diversity to the experience, making it more enjoyable. My hypothesis is your family would like the fancy platings more even in a blind taste test.

      Have to agree with the texture thing. Although, I’d like to do a taste test on a fancy version and regular frozen version of something to see if it does actually “taste” better.

    I went to a nice restaurant and they had lava cake and it was the same exact “Safeway select” brand one can find at Albertsons/Vons here in the states. They had the audacity to charge like $10 for it and I know it’s a 2 pack for like $4 at the grocery. I knew it was the frozen one because it was still frozen in the middle. It’s nice to do this fancy plate for yourself or friends or family, but not at a restaurant trying to pass it off as something gourmet.

      are you sure it was a Safeway cake? There are companies who make frozen desert for restaurants as most restaurants including the upper mid range dont have pastry chefs. They are handmade desert just made in mass for restaurants to use. Also remember when you go to a restaurant...you aren't paying for just the ingredients...you are paying for the cooks time, the dishwashers time the maintenance of the building the waiter etc. A lot of restaurants have lower profit margins then people think.

      @@m.d6035 i know "hand made" bakeries often use premade muffin / cookie / cake mixes. Helps them to guarantee the stable and predictable quality. I don't mind as long as there is extra work done with the filling or icing, like this video, but sometimes it's just plain biscuit dough and the most boring white cream layers...

    • @Call-me-Al
      @Call-me-Al 3 года назад +22

      @@jonathandpg6115 you should also specifically mention the cost of styling and maintaing the style of the venue. The atmosphere is part of the dining experience. Eating at a restaurant or cafe (or even a nice looking fast food joint) can be like a mini vacation from the rest of your life, or even like travelling home briefly for a bit if you are homesick and find some venue that is themed after elements that are nostalgic to you. A good interior decoration and styling is genuinely worth paying more money for.

    • @ccrisc100
      @ccrisc100 3 года назад +1

      Not really. Say if someone got something like this from a food bank for example, I think they would love a way to pretty it up very cheaply. Although, I agree accounting for the work alone you might as well just make it yourself.

    • @YmmednaLime
      @YmmednaLime 3 года назад +4

      Yes but you also have to take into account what your time is worth, like if you have a low income but lots of time then this is perfect but if you’re working more then the convenience is more important!

    Experiments do seems to indicate that presentation affects perception of taste. However, I've eaten masterfully plated, high-priced food that was massively disappointing. And simple, even messy food that was a gastronomic delight.

    Years and years ago ( on SBS I think) there was a comedy show, a parody of all those lifestyle/gardening/cooking programs. One of the segments was how to turn a KFC meal into a gastronomic feast ( a turret of coleslaw topped with refried chicken skin, a quenelle of mashed potato + deboned chicken piece with dipping sauce spheres).
