What a DJ. So many amazing nights on the Space dance floor watching James smash the place to pieces. They don’t make them like this anymore. Pure class
@@simonwilson7460 Correct! When playing a 33RPM record-- instead of using your hand to speed up the record or the pitch fader, you can hold down the 33RPM button and tap the 45RPM button to put it into 45RPM for a fraction of a second. This allows you to speed up the record very slightly and helps with keeping the records in beat. You can see him do it at 29:13.

About 23 years ago I was an assistant manager of a club in Southampton. I used to hang out in the booth loads as I wanted to be a dj. I had just paid James a ridiculously small amount of money like £120 and he gave me a cd and said “I’ve just signed for Sasha’s agency” I bumped into him in the city centre about a month later and he’d just played, Reykjavik, Helsinki and Tel Aviv in one weekend! (I think it was that…it was a long time ago!) The start of an amazing career, the most technically gifted dj out there.
23 years ago he was a big time vinyl pushed at a record shop in Southampton. Went to Bedrock with hime when he handed a mix tape to Lee Burridge, prompting a call from Sasha ... It's been great watching his career grow from local warmup sets to world tours and residencies. James is a gentleman, and one of the nicest people you could hope to meet. Great mix! 10/10 for sure! Honestly some of the cleanest, most seemless mixing on vinyl I have seen. You are a true master sir! Glad to see people still playing on vinyl as well! ❤❤❤
vinyl djing is truly insane. just think about it... you need to master beatmatching. you're rarely going to get them synced upon first try. that alone is just mindboggling. also, you have to KNOW your tracks inside and out... you can't just rely on waveform where you can see with your eyes where the beat drops, or how long the breakdown is, or when the bass synth or lead synth kicks in during the intro. there's just no way to have a deep relationship with your records unless you've actually spent an insane amount of time listening to them, understanding their energy levels and figuring it out in your HEAD where it fits in the story of your DJ set. additionally, the fact that this is mixed in key is great. again, without the help of digital DJ gear in the past, you had to do the 'calculations' in your head if the next song would transition well in key. sometimes it could be pure luck that a transition just blends so seamlessly. sometimes you'd have to figure it out through endless hours of manual practice. (and yes i know sometimes the key is listed on the sleeve or the vinyl itself, but my point still stands). i could honestly keep going about how special vinyl DJs are. but this kind of djing should truly be celebrated and lauded, because it's an artform that takes literal years to master. i'm definitely not shitting on digital DJs who hit the beat sync button because i'm really happy that DJing has been democratized for the most part, but when you see someone like james zabiela (or any of the classic progressive house legends) on the decks and seeing him at work, you honestly have to bow down because you're truly seeing a master at work. edit: just a small afterthought... you can see why someone like james zabiela and those of his expertise at the decks don't have time to jesus pose and raise their hands in front of the crowd... they're too busy trying to mix!!!
The biggest error of key clashes is mixing sections that have strong tonal components, such as synth chords, strings or a lot of vocals. If the elements are more sparse than a key clash can sound good. Most dance tracks are sparse at the start and end to facilitate this.
No need to overrate. Vinyl beatmatching indeed needs training and listening as your vinyl track is also manually counted (therefore not exact). But with some training we could beatmatch two vinyls in 15 seconds. Btw this mix could be prepared in which case he wrote down the pitchslider positions. Also the music is quite homogenic, not the hardest genre to mix. The transitions are straight-forward and good. The scratching is nice! With modern gear its not just a question of being helped by gear. The options are a lot more, opening room for more complex manoevres that couldnt be done with vinyl.
@@tysonziebarth8189right... I can see all the secret post it notes under the table.. If you've honestly ever tried this, you know how hard it is to get shit to sound right..
