  • I've installed LokSound decoders in two of my locomotives, and loaded them with work-in-progress "Full Throttle Steam" files courtesy Matt Herman at ESU North America.
I'm still learning about how to use the steam equivalent of the Diesel "Drive Hold" feature, but so far so good!
With this feature, one is able to simulate startring a heavy load, or drifting at track speed. This is done by "locking" the locomotive's electric motor at any speed on the throttle, then using the throttle knob to vary the sound by increasing or decreasing the throttle setting - without changing the speed of the train.
This quick video illustrates starting from a station stop... and drifting past the station. Locking the locomotive's speed is simple - one simply presses the appropriate function button. Press again, and it's unlocked and the locomotive will adjust its speed to match the throttle setting.
It does take a little bit of practice to do this smoothly - I notice the first locomotive (86) speeds up as it's leaving the scene, and that's because I needed to adjust the throttle setting before releasing the motor lock. But 20 minutes of playing with this feature should fix that.
    Colour me impressed!

If I ears are working correctly, I know where the bell and whistle from this sound decoder came from! Those sounds sound as if they came from Ex-CN 7470 located at the Conway Scenic Railroad in New Hampshire

Hi Michael: I wasn't involved with the recording at all, so I don't know where it came from. But I sure do like how it sounds... Cheers!

Trevor Marshall where did you purchase your decoder? I'm trying to buy one for one of my models and can't find it. Any way you could provide a link?

      Hi Michael:
As I note in the video description, these are "work in progress" files that were provide to me by Matt Herman at ESU. He is busy working on a commercial release of Full Throttle Steam, and is ironing out the last little bugs and tweaking the sounds. (The beta files I'm using have a few quirks, but the good news is that I can update the sound files on the decoder as soon as the commercial ones are released, because ESU allows users to download, update and change sounds on their decoders).
The first commercial files for Full Throttle Steam should be released this month.
The decoder itself is a LokSound Select - you can find them at any well-stocked hobby shop that carries DCC, or online. While there are many online sources, I have had great experiences with Tony's Trains.
      Cheers!
