One RUclipsr pointed out that Miku and Mafuyu's...*ahem*...'ghost marriage' event would have work much better if it was Rei from Fatal Frame 3 marrying her deceased lover Yuu.
So trueeee
Yeah, but Yuu crossed the river. In most East Asian lore, that means his Spirit has moved on and probably reincarnated.
Where's Mafuyu just kind of decided to chill with a ghost babe until he decided no to I guess.
I don't disagree though, so dumb.
Hell, have Miku marry a guy that looks similar to her brother or something, it would be a better way of saying that losing her brother traumatized her and now she has confusing feelings about him so she married a guy that looked very similar to him or something, anything is better than "I married my ghost brother so you are a child of ghost incest"
To me...Incest is NOT okay.
It would’ve made sense thematically, too.
Nitro Rad's reaction to the incest.
Pure gold.
Not just incest, but necrophilia too! Double ick!

JAPAN
rather than incest, I was just expecting the story to be "mom married too quickly to a guy she didn't love just to avoid being alone"
I was expecting that too, leading her into an unhappy and probably abusive marriage, making her depressed and have suicidal thoughts.
Kludgy Lynx I think that would have connected to the overall story better, considering that a lot of the enemies are suicide victims, having miku dealing with suicidal thoughts would have been an interesting story element. It could have even played into the ending of the game
Why didn't they do that lol

@@Christian-gr3gu there are claims that the original creator despised the final plot that we got but the dude is never able to actually say it outright because of NDAs

The ghost marriage incest could be completely avoided if they just used Rei and her fiance from 3 and still bring old characters back without altering the plot much.
Ghost marriage is still disturbing af, but that does sound better.

I wonder what is it that makes Nitro Rad so charming.. I'm so happy I found this wonderful channel I enjoy every single video.
It’s because he enjoys what he’s doing, rather than just having to review the newest releases. That’s what I think, anyway.
Part of the reason I watch him is because he's pretty wholesome does very good editing, and the skits are funny and not forced too.
The other reason is, well, he's kinda hot ngl
Honesty, down to earth, and gives detailed look at obscure titles
His investment in video games clearly comes from a built up personal experience without neglecting what works for other people than himself, most people would say passion without giving too much thought but that doesn't explain much now does it.
There's also the aspect that he knows what he talks about while recognising what he doesn't, he says it himself that he doesn't play stuff like ninja gaiden or dead or alive (go say that outloud, doesn't sound dumb >3> )
He also isn't loud and/or obnoxious and doesn't force childish humor on the viewer.
4:25 - "This game's story begins with a young girl named Mii U"
LOL
The reason that they made Maidens go into these boxes was to make them into "pillars", that hold back the mentioned Black Waters, which are from Yomi, the underworld. These pillars are then shoved into the Shadowspring where the black waters stem from and they will be holding back the waters for eternity, they will then either rot or become a Tokoshiebana. These Maidens were also tasked to hold onto their pain as they become pillars, to help lessen this pain they would perform these "Marriages", to help share their pain with another. Because of how unique Ose was, she was going to be a "Great Pillar", the strongest form of Pillar.
However Ose's pain of never getting to say she loved Kunihiko, alongside the pain of the shrine maiden's deaths, the pain Ose had developed within her was too much and she couldn't hold it in, because of that the ritual to become a pillar failed and the Black Water escaped.
In the good ending, Yuri feels the pain Ose had within her through touching her, and now having finally shared her pain Ose can now rest and the cursed Black Waters are then once again sealed away.
Regarding the ghost Incest thing: Would it have been an improvement if they went even dumber & have Miu be half ghost?
I'M GOING GHOST

_She's a phantom_
I misread that as MiiU...
Wouldn't that mean she'd get a cool youkai-forged sword, with which the number of things that cannot be cut are next to none?

"They could've removed them all together..."
James! They can't just be naked!
Hey hey hey, I had the same reaction of “what the heck? Who wrote this” when I heard about who Miu’s father was.
The same thing
Well, it's even worse when you find out that FF5 is directed and written by Shibata and Kikuchi, the same people who directed and wrote FF1-FF3.
Absolute madlad he did em all.
including Spirit Camera, so brave
If I'm correct, this game had a mechanic revolving around water. Ghosts will get more aggressive the more wet you are.
Yeah it's strange he didn't mention it while criticizing the difficulty. He seemed to think the mechanics were a bit bland but skipped over one of the most important new ones completely.
Malfunction you attract more ghost when you’re really wet, but your camera’s spiritual power become stronger.
Well, that doesn't sound weird if you take that out of the context
Yeah I remember the squishy sound everytime someone is wet. Ugh
Context is deeply needed here especially with already occurring ghost incest.
Nintendo be like: Fatal Frame V, let's see, Murder, Incest, Suicide, so far so good... wait, Bikinis? sorry man, but this is unacceptable, you have to change it somehow, I don't know, put some Zelda costume or something.
What? NO Mario or Luigi???? Japan, you really DON'T know what we want....
Don't forget necrophilia (she married a dead man and SOMEHOW got impregnated by him)
Technically it’s Spectrophilia not necrophilia
@Momoko Duval Localizations age up the characters arbitrarily anyway, and teens sometimes do wear bikinis at the beach. Just give Hojo a speedo, and we have a complete set.
@Momoko Duval Atlus loves their underage girls though...
"Why would I dedicate an entire external to my Wii u in 2019?" I feel attacked
Maybe because Wii U scene is completely worked and easy to find game for Wii, WiiU, nds, intall them and play :v
Most third party games released on the system had to be downscaled to fit on the standard WiiU storage. No joke, high performance PS and XB titles needed to fit the engine AND a smaller console space... they did Oddworld dirty.
@@Saxdude26 Oddly enough AC 3 was much bigger in space than the other versions. PS3 = 12 gb. Wii U = 20 gb.
@@diegoangelino4066 i know, sweet hackchi
my favorite ghost was the lady on the cliff. It's implied she was possessed and was being made to fall but she kept resisting, hence why her character model kept losing her balance. I thought that was such a neat addition to see ghosts of modern people rather than ghosts of figures who died years and years ago.
I'm surprised there was no mention of the "wetness meter"
Lemon Nomel right?, the wetness meter mechanic added a new element to the game, the more wet you get the stronger your spiritual power becomes, but the trade off you attract more ghost to yourself lol
Moist Meter
To be fair, given everything else wrong here that might’ve skipped his mind. That or the NA version had that part removed, since that did tend to happen with Nintendo products in the past.
Scooty Booty
There’s a meter in game that tells you how wet you clothing is, and you clothes visibly become more see-through. Not sure if it is in all versions.

11:55 Yes! He brought up the Tall Woman ghost! Yes! And talked about what she is a reference to! Yes!
Darkstar248 For those of you who are unaware, that particular spirit is called hachishakusama, or Eight Feet Tall. Her Creepypasta is a decent read if you ask me, if your interested in Yokai, Ghosts, Demons and the like, track it down.
@@cardshockmasterb234 i once read a story about her,

I figured, I was simply putting the name out there since Nitro had not, nor did you. That way people will know what to look up if they get curious, thats all :)
@@junichiroyamashita I think I know what you're talking about, and it was legit spooky
Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water is now multi-platform
Here are some things I wanted to tell:
The tall ghost lady is supposed to be the Hachishaku-sama, a yokai that is 8 feet tall(which makes Japanese think she's a foreigner) and wears a summer dress(or at least in the recent versions).
Also, that surveillance camera part of this game reminds me of Five Nights at Freddy's. :P
makes sense strange dress strange height nevarious intentions nope fuck that
22:42 Ayane is from Dead or Alive first. She was added to the Ninja Gaiden reboots later.
his phrasing of it, "idk which came first" makes it a little comical too...Ninja Gaiden came first having started in the 80's but Ayane herself debuted in Dead or Alive before being added to Ninja Gaiden in the Sigma version of the reboot :P
She is in the og Xbox version in ninja gaiden.
@@guitarspud1723 I actually didn't know that....so SIgma was just the first time she was playable in Ninja Gaiden then? I never actually played that one ( reboot/Black.Sigma ), though I know I wouldn't have gotten too far anyways due to it's difficulty....
Ayane's gameplay during her storyline is essentially Krishima's gameplay from FF4: Curse of the Lunar Mask.

The reason for them being entombed forever was that their suffering and loneliness would keep another gateway to the afterlife closed, as Mount Hikami, in the game, is said to be a place where the boundary between this world and the afterlife is very thin. Her feelings and attachments to Aso caused her to want to reject being an offering and well, the rest is history.
Sorry to hear you didn't care much about this one. I really enjoyed it. But oh well. Happy Halloween and thank you for covering this series. I really appreciated the retrospective.
@@TanukiKGA I particularly like this entry explores the concept of love and affections not expressed. Each of the protagonists and the final boss have people in their life that either they aren't connecting with.
Ren can't connect with women.
Miu cann't connect with her mother and feels empty on the inside because of it.
Yuri has difficulty connecting and being open with people and her mother figure.
I also really like the combat, atmosphere, and ghosts in this game.
And Hachishaku (tall woman) steals the show. I love how often she trolls ren as a non-combatant ghost.
@@thechad7643 i was surpised ren can actually fight her in the lady chapter on the forest.
@@Metalgearfox2000 I love the fact that she has a sass-walk. All the other ghosts are tortured and brooding, she's just in the game to troll and mess with you by how she can show up anywhere, at anytime once you're halfway through.
@@thechad7643 Remember his chapter as "Guardian" of the girls at the antique shop? When you're using the video camera, you can see Hachishaku walking around at one point and if you scroll through the other feeds and go back to that one, she's STARING at the camera, creepy smile and all. I actually jumped at that bit, that was a legitimately scary moment. *quick clapping*
@@98953812 that part got me so bad. She is probably the best part of the game for me
The tall woman(hasshaku sama I believe) is honestly my favorite part of this game. With my favorites moments having to do with her. Particularly during a home defense section where at one point she stood with her face right in front of a second floor camera, while she was standing on the first floor. And later when I tried to leave the security room to go to another and I open the door and she was literally just right there, bent over with her face in the doorway smiling at you before she disappeared. She didn't hurt you at all, just spooks you because it's fun. Which is also part of why I like her. Tmk she is the only ghost in the game with no real backstory to them. Nothing tragic happened, no ritual, no unfortunate death. She is just a legitimate evil spirit who finds enjoyment by tormenting you. There's no explanation behind her or her actions besides the sick joy she gets from what she does, which stands in stark contrast to all the other tortured spirits who come after you and others for some kind of logical reason or due to some trauma.
Also love how Ayane tried to fight the ghosts and got her shit fucking wrecked. She first appeared in DOA btw though it seems DOA and the current Ninja Gaiden series share a world

The exact moment where the game ripped James' mind in half.
I feel a bit depressed with the Wii U being brought up, I bought that thing with my own money and to see it become obsolete too soon was devastating.
At least it's got some great games.
It got my family through a massive depressive stage, heavy loss and temporary living location. I will defend it to the end too.
Meh just hack that damn thing
I just really love you taking the time to review the whole series...
Tons of nostalgia here, keep doing these cool niche videos you're passionate about, real treats!
When I read about the ghost marriage plot thread, I couldn't wait to hear your reaction to it. XD
Too bad about the gameplay though. It almost feels like revisiting 4 is a more worthwhile endeavor than this.
Gameplay is the best in the serie imo. It is the easiest but Fatal Frame has never been a hard game tbh.
@@lucasvallet4487 I was mostly talking about the clunkiness and padding. The combat and sprint button still looks amazing and would probably work well if ported to the switch. Not sure what to say about the 'Show me where to go' button though. I know it's hard to find that sweet spot of not being too handholdey and I'd rather err on that side of the spectrum instead of OG Resident Evil "I dunno. Just do something." style.
@@clericneokun I don't think I used the guide buttons too much, if at all. You should be able to go through the game without it. But then again, I'm used to ignoring those functions in most video games, unless I'm really stuck.
Actually the combate Is way better than in 4. In four you just have to press z and you win. In the v installment you actually have to track them since they tend to teleport constantly.

It was better than I was expecting. The atmosphere was good and so were the areas despite the back tracking. The story could have been more interesting if it wasn't so muddled, and Miu left out completely. The fatal glance feature was really cool and I hope they keep that for the future.
Seeing the 70 Dollar price tag physically hurt me.

Annoyingly those are two games for the platform I still want. You have great taste.
Nice video! Weird how your Fatal Frame retrospective also kind of incorporated a 3DS and WiiU retrospective too. As a fan of the series, part of me really wants more games, but after watching your videos it brings home how they've kind of gotten stuck in the "place is haunted because of a failed ritual" groove. Here's hoping if they do make more, they'll innovate the story too and not just the controls!

I think the problem is there are too many ghosts. Way too many. It feels more like zombie horde than souls from an unquiet grave. Apparently, ghost are so common in this universe that I'm surprised that it's even a mystery to the public at large.
To be fair, the ghosts only come out because of failed rituals, and they’re always either in forgotten isolated spots no one would think to go to or places that nobody in their right minds would want to go to given their sinister pasts.

24:05: I’m not kidding when I am saying this; I was fiddling with the Toy-Con Camera while watching this video. Perhaps Keisuke Kikuchi saw the Labo VR kit and is instead thinking of/developing a Fatal Frame game in VR.
Walther Penne, define how Labo BOMBED?
I think the switch version fixed most of the complaints you had. Honestly I just use the follow ghost to help me figure out where I'm at. Since, he can be very useful for new comers who play the wood levels. After, a few play threws to power the camera. The ghost guide. Did what he needed to an I like that . Plus, the ghost helps with seeing things you may have missed . I never noticed the weird walking stuff you had on the switch port. So, maybe it was patched in the re release version.
Otherwise, I love FF MOTBW . Besides FF2 and FF 3ds. I feel like the spooks offer some fun that could be fun to new comers. With some good horror that's not just all blood an gore .
I hope someday you try the re released version. I think it's like $40 vs the wii-U $70.

Good points were brought up but I gotta disagree overall, I had a blast with this game. What this game knocked out of the park and the strongest asset that it has is atmosphere. The music and location had me creeped out and sort of on edge in my play-through. Plus the motion controls could be tweaked to not be cumbersome. I had mine set up to tilt the camera but still use the TV and sticks to aim the camera and it was perfect for me (this coming from a person who HATES forced motion controls). I kinda remember the whole thing being that the shrine maidens would take in the memories of those that came to the mountain to die so they could move on to the afterlife with a clean slate. After taking in so many memories, that's when the whole becoming a pillar thing came in to stop the "black water" of the underworld from overflowing...? and the "ghost marriage" ceremonies were meant to help the pillars do their duty by tying them with a beloved who would become a pillar with them, something like that... either way, awesome job Nitro Rad!
