    I have worked into this recently as well. The reason was that my camera (A7R III) tends to produce images that are shifted towards red/magenta if you don't shoot RAW (so, the problem applies to JPG and MP4), IF YOU USE THE WB PRESETS (!). I have played around quite a lot with these A-B and G-M values to remove it, however the final solution for me was using the Kelvin scale and setting it manually. Somehow, these presets are too warm and always result in strange yellow/red tones. For Daylight, I had to go down to 4500-5000K to get accurate colours. I guess the standard one is at 5200-5600. "Daylight" is the one that is usable the most, but "Overcast" and "Shadow" are really extremely problematical. I wish you could just edit the standard Kelvin values for these presets.
    I am not quite sure where this comes from. Recently I saw a video that Tamron lenses tend to produce more yellowish colours, so maybe half the problem comes from my lenses. With RAWs, you can correct and sort this out, but with MP4s, fixing colours isn't such a joy so it must be as close to the "final" product as possible in terms of realistic colours.
    Concerning your video, I'd say you gave a very good explanation people can relate to if they want to want to work themselves into this topic, especially going beyond "I just use AWB" or having different sources of light in a scene. Very helpful!

    • @PaulJoy
      @PaulJoy  4 месяца назад

      Lenses can certainly have an effect on colour shift but by far the most reliable method with video is to to do a custom white balance in each location. It’s not the most practical but will give the most accurate results.

    New subscriber here, this is video great - clear and informative. One thing I'm struggling with - on the A7Siii, it won't let me set a custom white balance when I'm using one of my 3 custom shooting modes (C1 C2 C3, which I always use). So I switch the dial to movie mode, set my white balance using a card, and it says the custom WB has been captured. But then when I switch back to C1 and then select custom WB1, the setting is not what has just been captured.
    So - how do I set a custom WB when using custom modes?
    Sorry for the long and rambling comment!

    • @PaulJoy

      Unfortunately it’s a limitation with the way Sony have implemented the memory modes as they always recall the stored setting and do not allow you to do another custom balance while using that selection.

  • @BmcmediaRo

    Hello, very helpful video. This does not explain though what is wrong with software engineers at Sony. They built the firmware so that you can't set the white balance in any MR1 to MR3 modes, only if you're in Movie or manual. Then if you are in Movie, you can't preload the MR settings prior to set WB so that you have all other configuration ready to shoot! I am soooo pissed off!

      Thanks Dara. I haven't used them at all until this point as I prefer to switch settings as I go so I don't have a solution to offer I'm afraid. @@PaulJoy Well my problem is, usually when I start a shot I click on custom white balance and there is a white square and I take a picture and it sets the white balance on my A7rIII but with the FX when ever I try to use custom white balance it says due to my shooting mode, memory recall, I cannot set the new white balance. Totally frustrating bc I have M1 M2 M3 set for my 3 different shooting modes. 24p, 60p,120p. why the White balance cannot be set customily while being in the modes is stupid. Sorry I do not have the A7sIII but I thought I saw it is set just like the other Sony cameras like my A7rIII.

      @@PaulJoy I have the R6 and haven’t gotten the images out of it in video that I’d like. I am thinking of selling and moving to a7s 3 or a7iv - not sure those are that much better or easier to get cinematic looks. Any thoughts

    • @PaulJoy
      @PaulJoy  2 года назад +1

      @@jaymills1720 I've not tried the R6 but honestly from what I've seen it should be capable of producing cinematic looking footage. Are you shooting log and grading in post or trying to get that look straight out of the camera? FX3 and A7iv produce very similar looking images however the FX3 handles rolling shutter way better and has better high frame-rate support. The A7iv is better for photography though but with both cameras cameras being very capable at 4K/25 they make a good A/B Cam pair and I have tools that excel at both photography and videography.

      @@PaulJoy yea the problem is I was thinking I could get those cinematic images SOOC and it seems I’ll have to learn to grade log on resolve which isn’t a simple task. If the fx3 was easier to get an image compared to canon I’d switch. More people use a7s3 than r6 and I use x100v for photos so don’t need a hybrid camera. Worry I’d sell and spend another $2k just to be in the San situation of needing to grade a bit.

    Thanks for being so detailed -- very informative. One question: is setting white balance purely a matter of altering the Kelvin value? Can I set white balance by just twiddling the Kelvin value and observing the effect in the LCD monitor. Or do the tools on the Sony A7 help guide the user to a more reliable result?

    • @PaulJoy
      @PaulJoy  2 года назад +2

      Hi Robert. You can totally dial in the kelvin value by eye as long as you have an accurate monitor and many people work that way. The kelvin value however only adjusts the amber to blue value (daylight to tungsten) so this doesn’t take in to account any green to magenta influences that may be effecting the scene.
      You can also take those in to account manually too, maybe there should be a green shift in the image or maybe that’s an effect your looking for.
      Auto white balancing tools adjust both the amber to blue and magenta to green shifts, whereas kelvin only adjusts amber to blue.

      @@PaulJoy Hi Paul. Thanks so much for explaining about green to magenta, something I never knew before. I have a Sony A7R4A... does this cam also make adjustments for green to magenta automatically when I adjust white balance pointing the camera at a white card ? Previously I thought white balance was purely adjusting the Kelvin value. Do most cameras with a module for adjusting white balance just adjust the Kelvin value, without adjusting for green to magenta? I have a Panasonic FZ300 that has a method for adjusting white balance pointing at a white card... do you know whether this would also do green to magenta.

    • @PaulJoy
      @PaulJoy  2 года назад +1

      @@robertlightbourne2217 Hi Robert. I believe most auto white balancing cameras take green / magenta shift in to account as well as amber to blue as both axis are required in order to achieve an accurate white.
