When dead names are not dead

  • Not every trans identified person has a dead name. A "dead name" is the name usually assigned at birth that may be changed later on when a person transitions or begins to identify with a gender other than the one given at birth. It's okay to honor and miss the name you were given at birth even when it doesn't align with your gender identity. I'm spending the weekend here in Victoria BC for the Moving Trans History Forward 2018 conference and someone hit a chord when they told a story teller not to use their child's "dead name"

I usually use the term "birth name" as opposed to "dead name." I know that some people are more adamant on one or the other. "Former name" is also one I have used. I agree with you on that for the most part who I was in the past leads to who I am now. Thank you for your videos and posts Carver.

phoenixresurge I also always say my "Birth Name". Just yesterday I met another person here at the conference whose first name is Tara and I super excited to say "hey, we share the same Birth name"...

I think it cool when you do come across someone who has the same name (or nicknames) as yours if it is something that you don't come across a lot.
