Solo days in Marseille 🇫🇷 Summer in the South of France Travel Vlog 1

  • My first solo travel day, and internationally to boot! I explored the grand Basilique Notre Dame de la Garde, watched pastel sunset from the Palais du Pharo, and walked around the ancient Vieux-port neighborhood.
Stay tuned for my solo hiking adventure to the crystal blue Calanques, solo day trip to Aix-en-provence, and our weekend exploring Nice and Monaco!
(I want to birefly note that despite the reputation, whether fact or not, that Marseille has for being dangerous, I did not feel unsafe while out by myself. I only went out by myself to touristy areas and during the day. At night, I’d go out with my husband and the touristy areas felt very safe. There were tons of people walking around.)
    Thanks for being here!
    With lots of love,
    💌 Lily

📍Places in this video & helpful travel notes
    FOOD 🍽
    • Maison Geney - café and bakery. Their green bean salad was delicious!
    • Pita Pit - Mediterranean counter-service with THE BEST sandwiches, bowls, and customer service
    • Splendido - Italian restaurant. It was super busy so book ahead!
    • Dakao Vieux-Port Marseille - Asian streetfood
    PLACES 🏰
    • Vieux-Port (Old Port) - heart of the city since antiquity; bustling tourist hotspot. We stayed in this area and it was super convenient to walk to restaurants and train/bus stations.
    • Notre-Dame de la Garde, aka “la Bonne Mère” (the Good Mother) - the most visited icon in Marseille, an absolute must-see. I recommend taking the bus to save money and energy, or the little blue train for a little bit extra money and waiting in line. Or walk up if you are up for a workout. Admission (excluding the museum) is free, so definitely visit this must-see historic building and admire the tallest panoramic viewpoint in Marseille.
    • Palais du Pharo - built in 1858 by Napoleon III, it is now an event ground with a public park
    • L'odeur Du Temps - bookshop in Vieux-Port neighborhood (fun fact: "L'odeur Du Temps" translates to "the smell of time". The name was inspired by a phrase from the poem L'Adieu by Guillaume Apollinaire *)
    • Jeanne Laffitte Bookstore - bookstore with a journal section
    • Hema - Dutch chain store selling low-priced household goods. I bought my stationary from there.
