Sean, the early iteration of the BMW ABS system used an electric pump to both boost brake pressure and look after the ABS function itself. It was fitted to most of the models in the 1150 and 1200/1300cc range (GS, R, RS, RT and K). It wasn't particularly reliable, sounded like a strangled Hamster and the cost of replacement ran to over $3000 - often more than the value of bikes of 5 years and older. Also, if the pump gave up mid-way through a ride you had very ineffective brakes. Worse though was if the pump cut back in during braking. Now that was scary! K1200GT / K1300GT aren't as smooth as the K1600 - but they're a touch quicker! The 1600 is awesome but you feel the extra size/weight working against it a little. Having said that, the 6 is special, it sings to you all the while you ride it and I'd take it over the 4 most times. In fact I may be buying a K1600GT within the next few weeks.
That’s a sport bike and tourer combined. I love it! As a former sport bike owner I got tired of not being able to haul anything , you gotta wear a backpack to bring anything with you. With this I can have sport bike power for these 4 wheeler tailgating idiots out here plus I have storage space. 🤙🏾 I want one but you or have to get on a waiting list to get one.
It really sucks riding in the Georgia heat all bundled up. I wear jeans, laced sneakers, a full face helmet, and gloves, but I always wear a short sleeved shirt when it's above 80 degrees. I sweat so much as it is, that it makes me not enjoy riding at all. Then in the winter it's too cold. I can't win. Now, I only ride from 6-8 AM before it starts getting too hot. The other problem is the freaking bugs. I'm hardly riding anymore. What I really need is a BMW K1600GTL, a full heated electric suit for the winter, and a full air conditioned suit (if they even make them), for the summer. Otherwise for me, riding in these conditions is uncomfortable, and absolutely miserable.
If you have to read the manual or play with it for a while to understand it, it's not intuitive. Intuitive means it's immediately obvious how it works.
@TheMaloney If you don't like it, then don't watch it. Better yet keep your opinionated comment to yourself. It's his video/channel so as far as I am aware he can say anything he wants.
These are nice touring bikes but are top heavy and so wide I thought I was riding a washing machine. They are smooth and powerful though. Worse thing is breaking down and no dealers and parts available close. Plus parts prices mean getting a loan to buy anything price a starter, alternator etc just for fun.. So they are very expensive for parts.
Has your K1600 ever broke down? Didn't think so ;-) Going on 11,000 trouble free miles on mine. Road a Goldwing F6B for 45,000 miles... blew the transmission twice. Seriously.
Look into the cost of parta and how many mechanics there are around your country. My Beemer sat in a shop for six weeks waiting for a mechanic and ignition coil. $$600 Buy a honda!
K1600 is more expensive to maintain. You have to do a 20k miles top end service that is thousands, iirc. Oil changes are... 250ish... I mean, its not horrible but you gotta watch for that 20k service
You uploaded this just yesterday 5:35 " the gold wing of the current year ..ya can't change the windshield" since when can you NOT replace a windshield on ANY motorcycle that allows you to mount a windshield on it? If you meant adjust the height of the windshield, you're wrong there also and apparently have researched the gold wing very little.
I'm going from a R Nine T to this bike except a 2012 model. It looks big but once you get on it and start riding it's very easy to handle and the power of the engine is there if you need it but not scary.

I've had my F6B for about a year-and-a-half, and about 6 months ago I test drove the GTL 1600 again, in my opinion, my F6B blows it away on almost everything, especially slow maneuvering and slow turns!
John Keller I'm sure the F6B may beat the K16 on some things, apart from acceleration, top speed, braking, cornering clearance and fuel tank range. The K16 also has some niceties like traction control and the electrically adjustable screen whilst some of the F6Bs don't even have ABS. Plus, being much lighter you can get decent tyres for the K16.
F6B is great; put 45,000 miles on mine. LOVED IT... until I blew the transmission... twice. Even at that, thinking about getting another one, for long rides; nothing beats the comfort. I'm on a K1600 GTL now; 11,000 miles... and idk man... the performance and sportyness are LEAGUES better than the F6B. More lean, less rake, lighter; I can do power wheelies for christs sake!

BMW’s ARE expensive to maintain. Period. I loved my 1600 but have spent more in maintenance than any other bike I have owned. If you don’t think so, wait until you get the bill for the 18k mile service. Valve checks on this bike are Uber expensive and required every 18k miles. At MINIMUM you will pay $1200. If adjustments are needed it skyrockets and look to pay at least $2k for the labor and equipment. BMW is UBER expensive to own and maintain.
@@MannyScoot Just pointing out the facts. Salespeople often play with the truth to get sales. BMW is a great machine but to state they are not expensive to maintain compared to other brands is just a flat out lie.
I have a 2012 K1600GT with 58kmi and the valves have not needed adjusting. The original plugs went 50kmiles. Like all dealerships, they want you in every few thousand miles for rape-and-pillage. You can easily do most of it yourself, and there are excellent independent shops as well. Try putting 60000 HARD miles on a big HD and see what the costs are! I used to have it..... never again BMW will be in my garage. To much maintenance for just 25k....pump, ABS, shaft,( two times) .....unstable over 100 miles. I am so disappointed!!!
I thought my K1200LTC was fast...then i bought a 2013 K1600 GTL. This bike is faster, smoother, more fun, etc. My daughter rode with me on both bikes. When I would ask her which one to take, she would say, "The K12 is a bit more comfortable for the pillian, but the K16 is so much more fun."
A bit more... The K12 would get rough at about 4k rpm until about 4300 rpm (about 90-95 mph), then it would smooth out and hum. Never took it over 100...at 80 mph it just got so quiet you could hardly hear it at all. The K16 is smooth from 0 to over 130...I didn't quite reach the top advertised speed (139). Some complained about how heavy the front end felt in slow speeds (ie. parking lots). I love it. It feels stable and comfortable. I bought it with 27k miles. I have put another 70k smiling-ear-to-ear miles on it. My only complaint has been that it wants to overheat if the ambient temperature approaches 80 or above, if I am stuck in traffic, or construction. If I can keep moving at 25/30 or above, it doesn't have any problem. I have had the radiator/cooling system worked on four times...each time they thought the problem was solved...no joy. Still, I am keeping my K1600GTL. It is the favorite bike of my life.
We rode with a couple, on their 1600, us on our 05 1800 wing. We had fun, no issues with either bike. But after 3 hours of riding, his wife was complaining about butt pain. So, We had to take more pit stops. His wife asked my wife how she dealt with the butt issues. My wife said I have no issues, I have a lazy boy seat, lol When we stop at Eureka Springs AR. I let them ride the old goldwing around on the pig trail while we rode the tram around Eureka Springs. Needless to say, when they came back in, she told him to get a goldwing, sell the 1600 he wasn't happy, but he said the wing even though it's an 05 it was hands down better ride. lol . When we went out riding the next day, he tried to leave us behind on the back roads. The wing stayed right with him with no issues. The wing was purring along, not even breathing hard. lol We had fun on that trip.
Or you could be a very well trained rider and ride comfortable with a tank top and shorts and have absolutely no problem. Or you could be the guy that looks like a newbie rider wearing thin pants that provide no protection with dress shoes and transformer gloves and a riding jacket that everybody thats trained laughs at. Thanks for the safety tips though it will help new riders.
Doesn't mean I would choose a Goldwing. I would probably choose the BMW because I consider the new Goldwing's luggage capacity ridiculous, but I do think the Goldwing is a better looking bike.
Dan Hammack UH, Im the opposite. Ive always been a lover of goldwings. Started on a gl1100 standard and been riding them ever since. The 2018 is the first Goldwing I dont like. Im sure the engine and drivetrain is great, its a Honda. Im not sure about the front suspension, Im not gonna judge it until its been out a couple years. But, I absolutely hate the new look and appearence of a smaller bike. The tech looks great too but I cant believe they gave up luggage capacity. I feel like Honda is trying to appeal to an aging sport bike rider while leving longtime wing lovers sitting on the bench. Like Grandpa used to say " Dance with the one who brought you to the ball" Im now looking around for my next bike. Considered the transcontinental from Yamaha but Im not a VTwin fan. Im gonna look at that new BMW K1600B bagger, maybe I'll like it.

I would bet that most riders killed are wearing full face helmets and most, if not all the gear. Why do I say this? Because I'm betting sportbike riders are killed more than any other riders. Gear can't compensate for stupidity.

The k1600 has good reliability. Not sure where your comment came. I like the Goldwing too, but most big touring bikes are great. The k1600 is fast and maneuverable. Much more than the Kawi or GL 1800. If you’re a HD guy, then nothing will make you happy other than another HD.
I completely disagree. Ive found BMW motorcycles to be very reliable. They should warn you when you buy one though. If maintenance is needed, it will cost you your first born child. Parts are ridiculous.
Another K1600 rider here. Very reliable; you couldn't break it if you tried. Seriously. Try it for yourself. My Goldwing F6B? Blew the transmission at 14,000 miles... and then again at 31,000 miles. I love that bike but that's the one made for gentlemen riders. BMW on the other hand makes bikes for people who THRASH 'em and ride HARD. They just don't break.
just bought a used 2012 with 27K miles. The brake pads crapped out on me when I inappropriately got on them to hard, but replacement with OEM parts was cheap and it took 20 minutes to take the rear fender and rear wheel off. Replaced the pads in 2-3 minutes and replaced the fender and wheel in 10 minutes. Looking forward to oil changes...ridiculously simple.

Exhaust lower too, handle bar bit more backwards and foot plates instead of pegs
How tall are you Sir ?
They are insane in curves too...
While this is a great bike, I wish BMW never terminated those K bikes with inline 4 and shaft drive.
My old 02 k1200RS has 96,000 miles and runs like an animal. I love it regardless of the weight.
I had a 2003 K... inline 4... now have a 2018 K... inline 6. This 6 is better. OMG. REV IT!! The sound is INTOXICATING.
I have a 2007 1200 GT model and man I love it.....
@@user-cx2bk6pm2f I just got a dealer hold over 2018 GTL.. and DAMN!!! does that engine sound incredible when accelerating hard!

That’s a sport bike and tourer combined. I love it! As a former sport bike owner I got tired of not being able to haul anything , you gotta wear a backpack to bring anything with you. With this I can have sport bike power for these 4 wheeler tailgating idiots out here plus I have storage space. 🤙🏾
I want one but you or have to get on a waiting list to get one.
I enjoy riding my hd btr, doesn't handle curves as well as my bmw 1200Lt did...
Leaning toward this bike in the near future.
I’m getting to old for long rides on the v rod 😂

These are nice touring bikes but are top heavy and so wide I thought I was riding a washing machine. They are smooth and powerful though. Worse thing is breaking down and no dealers and parts available close. Plus parts prices mean getting a loan to buy anything price a starter, alternator etc just for fun.. So they are very expensive for parts.
Has your K1600 ever broke down? Didn't think so ;-) Going on 11,000 trouble free miles on mine.
Road a Goldwing F6B for 45,000 miles... blew the transmission twice. Seriously.
The services are where they get u.
I do my own service. Easy.
I luv hd and bmw the only brands I'd own at this point. Hd's dealer network is what sold me on hd.
And super cool apparel too.
Look into the cost of parta and how many mechanics there are around your country. My Beemer sat in a shop for six weeks waiting for a mechanic and ignition coil. $$600 Buy a honda!
was this posted this year in May?
K1600 is more expensive to maintain. You have to do a 20k miles top end service that is thousands, iirc. Oil changes are... 250ish... I mean, its not horrible but you gotta watch for that 20k service
I've own BMW GA 1600 and GW 1800
Nothing compare to GW indeed.
U can feel wobble and scary during on GA 1600 especially exceeds 80 mph.
Hi! I just bought a k1600gt and i also felt a little wobble over 150-160 km/h speeds is it like normal on these bikes?
You uploaded this just yesterday 5:35 " the gold wing of the current year ..ya can't change the windshield" since when can you NOT replace a windshield on ANY motorcycle that allows you to mount a windshield on it? If you meant adjust the height of the windshield, you're wrong there also and apparently have researched the gold wing very little.
He meant, obviously, the BMW's contemporary Gold Wing
1:57 Best part of the review LOL
Nice, but too heavy and powerful for me.I think the RT is the perfect compromise.
I'm going from a R Nine T to this bike except a 2012 model. It looks big but once you get on it and start riding it's very easy to handle and the power of the engine is there if you need it but not scary.

It’s a great one for sure,I’m partial to the weight savings of the RT though,
particularly after coming off of a Harley touring bike.
How is the rider sitting position?Bike almost looks like a crotch rocket style,,if its comfrotable for old guys id buy one with all that power,,,love the smooth shifting after enduring last 3 years of driving my m109,,

Not really. Especially when most videos show bikers at fault. Dont ride like a moron and you’ll most likely be ok. But armour up if you want in case a car pulls out on you cause that shit does happen and it suuuuucks.
Couldn’t ever get comfortable on a KBike. They are fast. Mine had a head shake. KISS principle doesn’t apply to Bavarian propellers. Yes maintenance cost is ridiculous. Why do you think used Beemers are so cheap?
It reminds me of a ADVENTURE SPORTS type bike and with only 150+ dealers in the USA thats a big turn off to ME.
My wife says I look like an old man on mine because it’s an old man bike. However, she’s never been on the back and I disappear in the twisties and she’s in the AMG.
This bikes pull to the left and it is a common issue in this bmw. Bmw ignoring this all the way. My k1600 pulling so hard that if I barely touch the bars in second I am in left lane. Bmw can you respond to this or at list tell that before we buy the bike so we know about the issue and we do deal or not. Bmw stop hide this issue!!!
Bummer. I've had two K1600 GTL's and both rode perfectly.
I had the same problem with my 2013 K1600 GTL. I personally felt it was dangerous and got out of it a couple years later.
@@comedicsketches - you drank the BMW kool-aide on that one. There should be absolutely no pull in either direction. That 13' GTL is the only BMW that ever pulled. My 19' R1250 GSA runs as straight as an arrow just like my prior BMWs and every other bike I have ever owned.

Hey sean
The "L" stands for Luxury! Grand Touring Luxury (GTL)
@@user-cx2bk6pm2f wow I just read this comment, since I'm exploring a 2012 GT again, the reason being, wait on it, yep my transmission is starting to ghost shift! This really pisses me off as these Honda Goldwings I thought we're Bulletproof, I've been told for to $6,000 to repair a flaw in the manufacturing basically, I only have 30 thousand miles on it

Wait until you see the 72K service..... ha ha
At least you're not eating cam chain followers, etc every 36k. Follow my channel to see how to maintain your BMW for very little money. - jaysbigadventure
@@Skierxman I put 70k miles on mine in 4 years...no complaint about the maintenance costs
I used to have it..... never again BMW will be in my garage. To much maintenance for just 25k....pump, ABS, shaft,( two times) .....unstable over 100 miles. I am so disappointed!!!
My 1200 Lt was fast af, i cant imagine what thats like!
Grand Touring Luxury I believe. Great Scripture as well
Its cool but the goldwing has no expansive service like all the beemers have and are known make a million miles

We rode with a couple, on their 1600, us on our 05 1800 wing. We had fun, no issues with either bike. But after 3 hours of riding, his wife was complaining about butt pain. So, We had to take more pit stops. His wife asked my wife how she dealt with the butt issues. My wife said I have no issues, I have a lazy boy seat, lol
When we stop at Eureka Springs AR.
The wing was purring along, not even breathing hard. lol
We had fun on that trip.
Or you could be a very well trained rider and ride comfortable with a tank top and shorts and have absolutely no problem. Dan Hammack yeah that why the FJR is better then the Kawi.
All ways liked them. But come on no freaking cruise control. I will give them one more year. Otherwise its a k1600 b for me.
The issue I have with Japanese bikes is they'll come out with a new model, and then sit on that model with few changes for another decade or so.
The BMW is definitely better looking then that abomination they dared to call a Goldwing for 2018.
Are you kidding? The BMW front fairing looks like an insect why the Goldwing has LED lighting reminding me of an Audi.
Dan Hammack It would be a boring world if we all liked the same bike.
Like Grandpa used to say " Dance with the one who brought you to the ball"
Im now looking around for my next bike. Considered the transcontinental from Yamaha but Im not a VTwin fan. Im gonna look at that new BMW K1600B bagger, maybe I'll like it.
