In this video I discuss all the reasons that your flash equipment may be misfiring, and explain how you can take steps to prevent it.
It's amazing how you keep coming out with the videos we need, right when they need them - thanks again!
Great video Rob! Thank you for being very direct and to the point with no fluff.
Omg! The very last tip happened to me and I don't even remember messing with the flash red eye setting. I ended up shooting a family session with a one second delay on the flash and am sure I missed a lot of the action shots. Well I am very glad I saw this video now because I have a wedding to shoot this weekend and I was starting to get worried. Thank you for taking the time to make this video and for adding that last tip. Life saver!
Dude you are a complete legend mate! one video to solve all Godox problems! Thanks a bunch!
My combination is a Sony A7iii with a Godox AD200, a Godox V860ii and a XPro trigger. I've been experiencing continuous misfiring and was really getting fed up with it all untill I watched your video.
I changed my channel to 21 and changed proximity settings to 0 to 30m and so far it's working perfectly.
Thank you so much for your lesson 🙏
I think I figured it out after watching this video. I had the same issue of occasionally misfiring every 20 flashes or so and I noticed that I do have my e front curtain shutter on so I’m going to turn it off next time I shoot flash and see if that fixes the issue
Thanks Rob!
Godox tt350f in master mode caused me to misfire 4/5 shots which is a huge margin. You mentioned going to 2nd curtain sync...now I can get back to taking pictures. Appreciate you taking time to make this video and suggesting more than one solution.
Pure nuggets of gold in here Rob, thanks!
Amen
I find it amazing that when shooting receptions with my second shooter, we share the same Godox 3 to 5 light set up and are sometimes rapid firing burst at the same time, and the flash system still gives us each correct exposures consistently without blackouts. Love this system! Oh, and great video Rob!
Really? same camera brand? I ddin't think it would work but maybe thats because I have only tried it with Canon Nikon or sony not two same camera brands
@@Ninjabiters no, different brands. I shoot Sony, my second shoots Nikon. As long as you're using a Godox transmitter it's all good.
Great video. I didn't know about the issue with using rechargeable batteries. Totally explains some issues I was having. Thanks!!
You really are a gem. Helped alot. All my godox flashes ad600, ad200 and v860ii were miss firing upto an extent that I was gonna change brands. But ur tips helps correct it. Thank you so much. U are a life saver or flash saver I should say😂
I don't often comment on youtube videos - but THANK YOU - I was going to send my 600 pro back because of misfiring. Swtiched to channel 19 and no misfire yet!
I was having soooooo many issues with my V1s and X Pro trigger today. There were two or three things in this video I wasn't doing, so thanks for that!
I do real estate photography and been dealing with misfires for a few months now and could not for the life of me figure out why, so frustrating. I have the Flashpoint system which is the same as Godox. So many variables that could be the issue. Thanks to your video I fixed the problem. It was my e front curtain, turned it off and shot an entire house and fired every time. I plan to stick with rechargeable batteries and if I have problems down the road I'll go back to regular AA's. Thanks for your video Robert, much appreciated.
Thank you so much for that I was going nuts and didn't know what to do. I was going to chuck in the bin but thankfully I read your comment, that solved my problem. 😂
Cheers
An excellent and helpful post. Thanks so much for the insight.
OMG THANK YOU! I was wrecking my brain today with the constant misfires during my shoot.
on my own i figured out that the trigger too close to the light would make a miss fire. But thank you for the setting in my trigger. I did not know that. Excellent information.
Great video, Rob. I just had someone who shoots Sony message me two days ago wondering why the flash wouldn't fire consistently. I said to make sure wireless flash is on and the e-front curtain shutter off. Turns out it was the e-front curtain shutter. Not sure how that worked out but that was the solution.
A few months ago my a6000 would fire consistently, like Everytime, but my a7iii would fire maybe 60-75% of the time max. I updated the firmware in the strobe and that solved the problem.
I've heard you mention wireless flash before which is interesting, as mine is permanently in "Fill Flash" so I never turn wireless on.
This is the solution I used too. I'm an IT guy by day so I always check for the channels used nearby as well
@@robhallphoto The Wireless Flash setting is related to Sony brand flashes I'm told. No clue what it's actually for.
this solved it for me!
Damn this solved ALL of my flash issues thank you so much
That's crazy!! I got off channel 1 and went to 31 and now it's working!! Thank you!!
You solved my problem! I couldn't figure out why I was getting random misfires using my Sony a7iii and Godox V350s while I was shooting in continuous mode. This was especially frustrating as I was using it to take focus stacking shots for macro photography, and I would end up with up to a fourth of my shots being dark. So frustrating! But your suggestion to turn off the e-front curtain shutter setting on my Sony fixed it! Now, I'm able to get consistent flashes every time shooting in Continuous mode. Brilliant, man. Thank you so much!
Excellent diagnostic ideas, thanks!
I was about to send the X2T back due to constant misfirings, I couldn't figure out why it wouldn't fire in portrait mode. I set the channel to 21 and the range to 30m and now it works! Thank you!!!
Thanks for the information in this video, this helped me very much ❤❤❤
Omg great advice
I had them on channel 1 forever and kept having issues. Now that I changed them to channel 20 it's way way faster and doesn't misfire. Now I don't have to wait 3-5 after each flash.
Great tips. Didn't know about Distance setting and Channel Scan. Thank you.
Thanks for the video. I"ll look here first if I ever encounter this problem.
Thank you sir. I will be testing these out during my next wedding shoot.
Great video .this is highly informative .thanks rob for this video . À lot of love from India
good video rob... thanks for sharing the info about using a different channel..
Brilliant Mr. Hall!!!
Thank you. Very informative, and a great help.
You saved my life man! thank you!
clear, concise, informative. thank you!
Cool! I'm a member of that Godox group. Excellent video. ))
Thank you, great info.
This help so much. Thank you!
Thank You For The Info
Great Video! I came to this video hoping to find out why my TT600 wont fire.
One simple point that might help some, like me, is that I had to figure out that:
A flash will not fire if your using a digital or optical view screen.
God bless you for giving me a way out. This a nice
You’re a Saint! 🙌🙏📸 thank you so much.
Robert this is awesome! Lately when I’ve been shooting in the studio I’ve been experiencing misfires and it had me wondering if I needed a system upgrade. I’ll put these to test and see if they improve functionality.
Any results? I use the xpro trigger with an ad200 pro and indoors it seems I can get 10 to 20 shots in a row and then its like the connection just drops.....then after a while it might come back. Super annoying when trying to get a good work flow and have confidence in a session, especially in front of a new model.
@@BrothaWithACamera3 years later did it work out ?
Very informative thank you!
Is this like a free flash trouble shooting master class or what ?? Amazing buddy 🔥🔥🔥
Thank you so much! I was very worried that one of my flashes would not be able to work anymore as a receiver. Now I understand that my trigger might have been too close to that flash.
great video!!
Nice video. Subscribed. I have several (4 maybe?) Godox controllers of different variety because I don't trust them. One of them had the backlight fail almost right away, most of them have misfires, and the most recent one has a flap that just wont stay closed (okay, that's trivial). The good thing about them is that they're like 50 bucks, so having several doesn't kill you.
Thanks for the video addresses many questions 😀
Thanks Rob !!!
Minutes before I Lost my mind I found this "how to" video. THANKS ALOT :-) First Day with my Godox V350s and it was misfire here and there. Not and longer, thanks allt again
Thanks for this video! I totally had a bad day at a small event where both my lights miss fired so many times! In the end I have more photos without flash than with flash...
Same here. Have you been able to correct the problem?
@@KCStorm yeah I've done a few things to fix it. First I have chosen a channel that not many people would use to prevent disconnecting. Second I'm using less power and a higher ISO. This seems to work more reliably for me.
I am facing the same issue with my V1C for Canon and can't for the life of me figure out what could be causing it, and I am using the V1C as an On-Camera flash unit. I had so many misfires at an event last week that I was absolutely embarrassed at missing so many critical shots. I realized that the issues started about an hour into my event even though I was shooting at relatively low power values between 1/16th and 1/4 power.
I have looked at it again this morning trying out several test shots and again experienced a couple of misfires. No pressure on the unit, leisurely testing and still misfiring. Hmm, I am really beginning to question my purchase. SmH
Great Video!
Thank you, Robert. This was a great help to solve my non firing flashes with X Pro S and Godox speedlight. I have also found it helpful on occasional non firing to shut all off and restart in this order. Switch on camera, then transmitter, then flash. Do you think this way of switching all on is helpful in any way, or does it matter which way you switch all on ?
Thank you! I'm using a Godox X2T and two V1s with a Nikon D750. The delay was driving me crazy until I turned off red eye. Doh!
Thank you-I have a bracket that allows me to mount my v1 next to the side of my camera instead of having to use the V1 on top of the camera (this conf provides a better light output than the harsh on camera flash). Many ppl use a hot shoe extension on this conf but I figured I could use my r2 trigger. I got sooo many non fires that I gave up..drove me crazy. Would kill the shoot --now I know I can make this adjustment . Can’t wit to try it out.
thank u so much sir for your information
V860IIIO defaults channel to 21. I just got mine in (after 4 month backorder) and that's how it's set.
Thanks for the tips. I got the R2 XPro II and the speedlight.
Now, for the firmware updates. Watched one video so far.
Thank you for the tips. I'd like to add one. My X1T (Nikon) was not firing my flashes 100% of the time due to being too close. I found the X1T-N also has a low power 0-30 meters setting.
If you press and hold the TEST Button while turning on the trigger, the Status Indicator Lamp will blink twice. Once it does, release the test button. Now, for that session only, the effective transmit distance is less than 30 meters. (Wishing this was a settable function.)
The first thing that came up in my mind was to upgrade the firmware, but than I saw you mentioned it already :-)
Hi Robert thank you for a very intuitive and detailed explanation and troubleshooting tips. DO you have any suggestions though if the issue is that the Godox V1 is not even firing when pressing the green test button? The flash also does not fire when attached to the camera but everything else seems to be working including the model lamp. When the green test button is pressed the flash seems to react because it makes a sound after pressing the button but there is no flash firing. Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Hi...great info..thanks...I just bought the Godox x2t trigger...what kind of receives would I need to fire a non-godox flash, or would I need another x2t
You save lives!
Excellent
Hi Robert
I always follow you Godox post.
Trying to find a decent 7inch Bowens mount reflector so that I can use an umbrella.
Ps any way to gel the bare bulb in a softbox ?
I can use my roundhead but then I can use the modelling lamp
Thanks
Helpful tips
Thanks, the only other thing I’d suggest is if you think It’s misfiring half way through your shoot it might just be the flash itself is in overheat protection mode which allows one shot every like 5 or 10 seconds.
yep brilliant thought
Is there a way to deactivate the protection mode?
Hi Robert: Great video. I didn't realize that the trigger needs to run on Alkaline batteries. I will have to change this out for my device.
Have you heard that the Godox V860 II flash is not CSA approved (I live in Canada)?
Cheers, Keith
I just shot a wedding 1st time at the reception using the V860II on camera as master and using the AD200 pro off camera in the back of the room was misfiring so much. there was numerous spans where id get like 10-15 in row miss firing then get 1 to fire then 10 to 15 misfires again. It was devastating as I missed alot of key shots. I did have both in radio mode so my only guess is the channel I was on was crap. I should have scanned the area with my Flashpoint R2 Pro Mark II I had in my bag. None the least, GOOD INFO!!
As always, despite my best efforts to be thorough I have an extremely important afterthought...
One more solution is to UPDATE YOUR FIRMWARE, especially if you have a newer camera body.
Camera manufacturers tweak their flash systems, both with new camera releases and firmware updates, to mess with third party flash compatibility. By doing so they can increase the amount of users reporting problems and decrease trust in third party systems, in an attempt to get people to buy into first-party speedlight systems. I think this is beyond stupid considering no camera manufacturer makes studio lights, but it's a reality. So a lot of times third party flash companies have to do firmware updates just to keep things working right.
Interesting. How do I update the firmware of my godox AD200. I have had misfiring with my A7iii. Thank you
Thanks for your thoughts Rob - really helpful. The flashes' HSS don't work either when sitting on the camera so it's not the trigger. But someone else suggested updated firmware and I'd started down that route until finding that Godox don't do easily accessible updates for Mac. There is a workaround so that's my next option. I was also tempted to get hold of a Sony flash just to see if that's an issue - but then reluctant to fall into that trap that you mentioned.
Wow insane.
That makes little sense to me. While most (all) camera manufacturers have their own speedlights, none offers studio flash and they do need to support HSS and any other tricks. I _have_ seen a Panasonic firmware update specifically to improve compatibility with third-party studio flash.
thank you so much for the video!
could you please give a link to the godox FB group?
Just to add in, you can also upload the firmware of the wireless transmitter/receiver especially with the V1 models
Thank you.
Thank you
Thank you sir
excellent video! will the same concepts apply if I was not only having misfires but also when I turn off one of my flashes from the trigger, it will still flash anyway! like sometimes I use three lights, and say I want to temporarily turn off flash "B" and it flashes regardless. its so annoying... has anyone experienced this?
thank you/ Great info here.
This feels very educational except I have no idea how to do the things you recommended. I love my godson system but it is ALWAYS misfiring!!
Any common causes for on-camera flash with event photography and misfires on the tt685's? I use rechargeable AA's. Power seems to drop and get back up again. Could that be overheating? Anything else?
Wow so good.
Got one of these flashes from a thrift store and someone left batteries in it that leaked badly. Make sure you take the batteries out when storing them. Anyway these have all kinds of unexpected pieces inside compared to basic flash units. It has a structured light laser that doubles as a lidar, a fiber optic light sensor that measures the flash intensity directly, an IR remote control, a flash field adjustment mechanism, and a real pulse forming network. I did notice the flash tube itself was very small for the power delivered and would not live very long with full power shots.❤
For the past 2 events, my AD200 strobes have had a long recycle time so I miss shots with flash. They take 15 seconds or so to recycle. As if they heat up quick or something. They are normally set to 1/32 power and I get a good 30 minutes before they take forever to recycle. Could it be bad batteries? They show fully charged and don’t show that they are over heating.
Hi Robert. Great video. My Godox 600 had a misfire experience that doesn't appear to be covered in this video. I did notice some squiggly / wavy lines on my Godox LCD screen during the misfire. Unfortunately, the booklet doesn't explain what this means. I resolved the issue by restarting the Godox, but I would like to know what the squiggly lines on the LCD screen means. Any thoughts?
Perhaps the overheat warning?
You likely solved my problem. I had a random flash that wouldn't fire. Whenever I took a picture one of my girls toys would make a small noise. I found it funny at the time but now realize that channel 4 is bad... resetting my channels on all my flashes.
Great advice Robert. There's always something to learn. I was unaware of the rechargeable battery and trigger conflict.
I love the Godox gear and head to YT to fill in my knowledge gaps. My only gripe with Godox are their poorly written and incomplete user manuals. Certainly the worst l've encountered for any photographic product.
Godox don't be cheap skates go hire some competent technical writers, liaise with pro photographers and rewrite those manuals.
Rechargeables put out about 1.4 volts where the normal ones have 1.5v. So when you use rechargeables it will automatically show that the battery is half power. This only applies to the trigger though as my flashes have always shown full.
Peter Lemke, that (& nonexistent customer service from Godox themselves - only from the resellers - )'s part of what keeps Godox' prices as low as they are😁! They're like, "At this price (compared to Profoto/Nikon/Canon..) let them look on RUclips for info!!" 😁😂. (Just my opinion😁).
@@raynaudier8622 I've heard those stories. I wherever possible purchase from the local distributor who is also a retailer. That gives me more piece of mind.
Can you please talk with Adorama & Godox to talk to them about updating the FIRMWARE for the Remote to communicate properly with Rechargeable Batteries (very very specifically Eneloops, at the very very least). This would be a very heroic and important thing to get done. I believe that if it can measure battery life, it can measure the voltage & auto-detect battery type.
6:03 "This VIDEO up here" isn't showing up as a link.
What do you recommend? I use have a new godox v1 that I tried to use on camera. It misfires constantly
Thank you
very helpful
btw nice beard 💯
Good video.......I was at an event and I started Misfiring.......with a new camera I think the trigger needs replacement
I am noticing more misfires when shooting in portrait mode. I thought maybe connections on my Fuji camera but then when shooting with others, Nikon, Sony and Canon, observed the same. This happens with not one but multiple triggers. Shooting inside as well as outside. Maybe the orientation of the antennas inside the strobe?
had to just replace tt600 for this issue. It got worse and worse until it stopped working. Does not build confidence at all. No issues on Canon speedlights which are 20 years old. Had misfiring on one of my heads also. Not sure what was up with that.
Great video. Very informative, but none of the suggestions resolved my issue. This has had me baffled for months. It seemed my flash would intermittently quit working. I discovered through trial and error that my fairly new (12/2021) V860II C will not fire when set to full power. If I set it to ½ +0.9 power output, or anything less, it works fine. Set it to full power; It will not work. It doesn’t matter how I set the power, either on the back of the flash, or through my Sekonic trigger. Firmware version 1.8. Sending to B&H for warranty service.
I use rechargeable batteries and don't have much if any of a problem. I may have a few misfires, but I for one can never tell if I just undershot my recycle time. Either way, it's never been a problem for me yet, and the only time my flashes stop firing is when my speedlite gets overheated and stops shooting. I will note that I just bought my trigger and receivers very very recently, and they all came with the latest firmware. So it's entirely possible that either the firmware or even slight design fixes may have made things work better. People should always keep their firmware updated on these things. It's not the easiest thing to do with Godox, but the Northrups have an excellent, thorough video on it and even an easy to remember web forwarding link to check the firmware list.
But I can't imagine using disposable batteries. It's too damn easy to leave the power switch on, and even if you don't, they still take significant power to use. It's not like a TV remote where the batteries last forever. Batteries are friggen expensive. If it starts causing problems, I'll have to switch. I do keep my batteries charged up between shoots and am always switching them out every chance possible. But I don't think everyone should be telling people to default to friggen Duracell. These units DO work with rechargeable (maybe brand, design, and voltage of the set of batteries are all factors…DON'T KNOW). Whether or not some problems do come up and whether or not those minor problems justify the added cost should be left to each individual photographer to determine. Not “only use disposable batteries because reasons.” I understand the argument made that rechargeable have lower power levels or whatever, but that doesn't necessarily mean the triggers won't work with them. It leaves me wondering how many people think it's a battery issue when it's really something else among the reasons you've outlined.
Also note, I use EBL rechargeable batteries from Amazon. They claim advanced technology that makes them deteriorate more slowly… Not sure to what extent it's true, but they work incredibly well for me.
Does changing channel is that only for off camera flash? im having misfires also when mounted on hotshoe. thanks
I was waiting for this during your video... The overheat limit in HSS (ad200 with non bulb head after 20 shots misfire for 10 sec).
I know you know it but you need comments on your video 😁
zami photography yep, I suffer from this too
The ad200 heat up with hss but about 70 flashes. 20 seems a bit low. Remember they don't have built in fan just vents.
my new godox tt350f is showing low battery “blinking battery icon” even i changed it to new AA battery...what battery can you recommend?
As a rare case, I had a problem with stage LED lights emitting some radio signals which resulted in continuous firing of strobes. Eventually I stopped using all radio trigger system and for that event I used old wired system. ☹️☹️. (Old is gold?)
My Godox V1 doesn’t work well with my Sony a9ii , once attached on camera , flash keep flashing and didn’t give correct white balance when camera set to auto white balance.
When i use on camera flash mounted on top of trigger then I am experiencing misfires on my on camera flash very often (3 out of 5 misfires). Can you help me find out how to resolve that?
I've found that the only way to never have a misfire on my Nikon D5 is to actually set the flash sync speed to 1/200 and not 1/250 or 1/250* or greater. I also have to turn TTL and HS off. Never misses. But, I will get occasional misfires if I'm doing anything different... even when I'm certain there is enough power or I'm using a good channel and everything else you talked about. I've experienced misfires on both standalone triggers and the v2 trigger. But, as long as I use these settings above, my AD600 Pro and AD200's, both pro and non pro, work just fine and NEVER misfire unless I try to do something they simply can't do; like 1/1 power at 14 shots per second lol.
need to try this solution
