Hey Justin I'm from Dominican republic , it's amazing that u know and hear songs like this one, if u have time, listen to " suite folclórica dominicana" by Luis "terror" Díaz, I think you'll love it!
Inspiring to see how Justin pieces this together... beautiful to watch and see it at 18.24. I will continue to dream about having even 1/20th of Justin's talent.
For a "casual" video, this was so informative to see how you worked this out. I think it will encourage others to do the same, who may have thought, because of the bit of stumbling one has to go through, that they were not cut out for it.
The more I watch you, and my current teacher, I see experienced guitarist doing the things I thought were only for beginners. Glad that I'm not the only one humming to find notes, and clapping to find rhythm in a written piece, and plucking the wrong notes again and again when figuring out music. Its nice to know those things will go on...it reassures my process.
Cool - years ago I read an interview with Richie Blackmore where he said that guitarists should transcribe brass instrument solos to learn phrasing. You just proved that.
Justin you are such an inspiration!!! I’m transcribing from your transcribing LOL, thank you very much. Thanks to you now I start understanding what transcribing is and I kind of enjoy it.
Very nice to see you practicing. I do the same! Felt very familiar. I guess you helped many people that are still figuring out how to transcribe songs and solos! Well done!
Thank you! I stopped the video before you started your transcribing and started do it myself. I am a beginner at transcribing. I think i got it right, even after i watched you do it. Today i must have played the solo atleast 100 times, i love it.
Year and a half into your lessons, and for the last month going back and practising all the scales, and now I know why. Because of you I do understand the scale modes and that there are three minor scales so its great to see them explored in practice I can understand. This Chan Chan seems to me a hybrid of jazz, swing and classical, but hey their just labels. I guess thats what drove Rhy Cooder to those great almost forgotten musicians in the first place. I saw Buono Vista social club on their first UK tour about twenty years ago, in a small music venue in Bristol UK, and they blew me away.

Great job Justin. Like you said, beginning at 15:08, the rhythm of the song (here: 3-2 son clave) is very important. The concept of staying in clave is vital in the playing of cuban music.
Thanks you so much Justin! I'm using this video to create a midi trumpet solo for a cover I'm making of Chan Chan and it's so helpful. I'll post it on my channel soon. What a beautiful solo and it's a great exercise for the hear. You nailed it! Cheers!!
Glad u getting into cuban music.. whole world opens up. Cuban music is rooted in one of the best african and latin beats in the world . You have to be 🇨🇺 ..
Fascinating to watch your process, Justin. Thank you so much. Like you, I find I have to sing the line before, or at least as, I take it to the guitar. Beautiful solo. And yes, - I love the way it outlines the chord changes.
This is the first solo I managed to transcribe on my own. However I did not go through all the theory stuff and I'm so glad you did. I learnt a lot about why this solo sounds so good to me. Thanks !
brilliant informal way of showing us how you transcribe and work. Loved it, keep up the hard work you really make thinks simpler for me and very enjoyable more of this kind of thing please
This trumpet solo, in part, inspired me to return to the trumpet after 30 years - I even managed to find a gorgeous silver plate professional 1972 Yamaha for an absolute bargain in a local antique shop!
And just like that I now know the trumpet solo to Chan Chan. And I’m inspired to try a song on my own. Thank you Justin. I love technology! We’re making each other better by doing this type of thing. ✌🏻❤️💪🏻
Hi @JustinGuitar thanks for this great lesson! I’m Cuban and this was one of the first song I learned to play. I own all your books and now thanks to you I can also play the solo. How about teaching how to play Cuban Tres Guitar?
Hi, thanks for supporting Justin and the channel. Cheers 😊 | close2u | JustinGuitar Official Guide [ www.justinguitar.com/ ] & Moderator on JustinGuitar Forum
Sooo strange. Mee too. I mean, I never listen to it, in the last week I streamed it one time at day to dance with my little baby girl (1 year). It's not a coincidence, definatly! RUclips suggested to Justin what his followers are listening
Thanks for posting this. Cool to see a pro do it... helps me realize there's no magic trick pros use, just keep doing what I'm doing to get better at it. 👌🏼
Fing Amazing. The thing i am most surprised in this video is not the part of the solo but the fact that justin is transcribing without using the headphones.I would mess up so much without my pair.
many of our songs use exotic scales with great melodies, but what spins my head trying to analyze them specially when they have something like Am and Amaj chords and some chromatic notes that must be different scales for short time. I'm glad that I'm not the only one.
Seen you transcribing made me to transcribe aswell..you are e very good teacher Justin..I hope one day I can have private lesson with you when time allows me to. And about this solo I think is cool and I will learn it aswell :)
I decided to learn the song from listening to the notes you played rather than the notes I heard from the trumpet, only because the notes you were playing were a lot clearer to my ear. I took a very casual approach however to the fingers I use to play on each of the strings/notes. I don't follow what you do exactly because I never really practised playing scales in the traditional way. Do you think this might harm me in the long run? I don't believe the fingers I use is bad technique because it doesn't cause me any kind of pain. But I feel like maybe I should re-learn this solo with your fingering just in case maybe I picked up a bad habit with my casual fingering. Thoughts?
I have always loved this tune, many thanks for the transcription! Wonderful💙🙏 check out Maribel Delgado on RUclips for more Cuban goodness. She plays a Quattro and is quite remarkable.
Hi Justin - Can I ask a question please? - The first 7 notes that you play are A,B,C#,D,E,F,G. The notes of the F Major / D minor scale (which seems to be the key of the tune) are F,G,A,A#,C,D,E. The two groups of notes don't match but yet it sounds good played together. What am I missing?
Thanks Justin, have to admit the theory is a bit above me at the moment (I’m on PMT 5.2) but never the less really informative. Have a great afternoon with your daughter at her Sports Day. PS. This may be of interest to some, bur Guitar Pro 7.5 has a 20% discount until July 5th. I am going to take advantage of the offer, seems like a great deal. (I have no relationship with them at all 😊). All the best, beautiful day here, Summer Solstice.
Hi Jason. Can you tell me what is the difference is between Emajor7 and E7 I always thought that A E etc were major chords, yet they sound totally different and when to play them.
Mervyn Jenkins yo E7 means "E Dominant 7", same chord structure as the E major 7 but the seventh degree is flattened. So an E major 7 is 1,3,5,7, an E7 is 1,3,5,b7
Hi Justin i watch your Guitarlesson's for long time i have your books and i can ply a so many Songs through you. I have a big wish , perhaps you can do a Guitarlesson from the Song of Richard Marx - *right* *here* *waiting* *?* ... that would be great ! THX for all my buddy Heartfelt greetings from Germany... and sry for my bad english ;).
That was interesting. I can see how a bit of theory helps with trying to figure out a song. Good song choice too. I was lucky enough to see the original Buena Vista Social Club on tour and I still think of it as one of the best concerts I have been too. The talent on that stage was amazing.

Hi Justin, im struggling to find the transcription on your instagram scrolling through years of posts! Is there another way to access it? Cheers
As a Cuban salsa dancer and a guitarist, I really enjoyed this, thank you.
Yes, do more of these! I'm always into expanding my musical knowledge.
Yes, I enjoy experiencing your process. Would welcome more of these kind of videos.

My dad would play BV Social club when we were on holiday when I was young. Super fond memories, always reminds me of summer!

I love how you can listen to that and see the notes in your head and transfer them. Like a little cartoon of notes over your head. Awesome!
Hair looks cool like that 😊 really suits you!

Stunning music, and a great album. Yip, definitely would like to see more, do the whole album!
Yes, this is a fine thing to do and very useful. And what a great dad you must be!
For anyone wondering what software Justin's using for playback, based on the reflection on the guitar it is a program called "Transcribe!".
Would love to see you do something like this again! It's really good to see the process and try to apply it on my own. Super helpful!!!
Love the format, more please.
Really cool ! I love this album.
I was waiting for this one for a long time :) nice one, J.
This is me transcribing happy birthday, and in 26 minutes if I'm lucky

Especially Ruben Gonzales one.
Transcribing is a great skill to have. You talked about it years ago and I think mentioned it in one of your books but it's good to see it done.
Watching you work on it was like watching a kid in a candy shop! Nice work!

Hey Justin
Just back from Havana so totally love this song and your analysis

I know it's just notes, but I'm always amazed how you can transcribe music from one instrument and find a way to play it that works on another

Will give it a listen!
Well done lesson. Dm harmonic and melodic minor scale, Song Surgeon software is very handy to transcribe pieces. Grtz, L.

Really great video. I need too learn to transcribe. You make it look easy, but I'm sure it's not.
Cool
Btw I find transcribing a very stressful task, with all that "pause - play - rewind - play". I am giving it a try but sometimes does my head in xD
Check out another Cuban gem - Carlos Puebla

We learned transcribing at 7.yo in the conservatory, but for some it seems rather difficult. " Good ears are seldom "
How cool are you ???!!!
