Hello neighbors, it's Brad here at etrailer. And today, we are taking a look at the B&W Continuum weight distribution system. Now, this is gonna be available in four different configurations. And really, it's gonna come down to your shank or the style of trailer you have. So, you can get it in a two-inch shank here or a 2 1/2-inch, depending on your truck. And you can also get it with or without a cylinder extension and that's gonna be for your standard trailers versus your underslung trailers.
Now, if you've seen the traditional weight distribution system, you're probably looking at this and saying, "That looks a little bit different." And it is. And it's really addressed some of the issues that you have with your traditional style of weight distribution and, I think, fixed a lot of them. And the main thing that you're gonna see that's different is the size. Normally, you have bars that extend to really get that tension and this one works a little bit differently by using a hydraulic cylinder and a pump. And that way, you can adjust exactly where you want it to be.
So, you do get a little bit of adjustability as well. Now, normally, when choosing a wheat distribution system, you have to match it to your tongue weight. And a lot of times, you're gonna be matching it to the gross trailer weight of whatever travel trailer you have, and that's not the case here. This one has a range of a tongue weight from 600 to 1,600, so it's gonna work with a bunch of different travel trailers and that's gonna be really nice. So, if you ever upgrade down the road, you can take this Continuum and put it on there.
Even if the tongue weight changes, you're still gonna be able to use it. Now, as far as your gross trailer weight rating on this, it's rated up to 16,000 pounds, which is really gonna open up the window for whatever size travel trailer you may have. Now, your traditional-style bars are gonna use a head that's very similar to this. This one attaches a little bit differently, but it's gonna give you kind of the same idea. It's going to tension here on our brackets.
And those are gonna need to either be bolted, clamped down or welded onto your trailer. And sometimes, that's where it can get a little bit tricky, as far as finding space to mount that up. This one, being a little bit shorter, mounts kinda right behind the jack and normally right in front of your propane tanks and you really only need 2 1/2 inches of clearance to be able to make that work. Now, one of those added benefits to the new design of this is gonna be storage. So, traditionally, when you're done towing, you're gonna have to store those bars, whereas this one lives on the jack. They give you a mount. And that way, when you separate this, you can place it here and that's gonna keep it from dragging or getting in the mud and just keep it nice and clean and in a nice spot. Whereas if you are at a campsite or at home and you're done using your traditional style, you're gonna have to store these somewhere, so you'll either find a spot in your truck or your RV. But again, these do have to go somewhere, they can't just live on there. Setting up a traditional style also requires adjusting the pitch. That way, the ball's gonna be at a nice spot when that's tensioned up. Well, you can see, our Continuum already has that pitch. So, when you hook up and use that hydraulic cylinder to add pressure, it's going to stabilize that out. So, that's one less thing that you have to worry about. To adjust height on a standard one, you are gonna have to take these bolts off and retorque them down, wherea

I see a huge problem with low ground clearance. I have seen for myself older campers that with the traditional L bars would skim high spots, this hitch would be plowing the ground all day.

I agree,. We boondock all the time and most of the roads have deep enough dips that this rig would be dragging and getting damaged. We have the Anderson now, and like most things, a compromise. Not being able to line up comepletly straight has been an issue...possible issue here?

I thought that too, until I thought about truck and trailer axle height.

I really like the ease of use with this WHD. Install looks super easy as well. My concern is the sway control. I really don't understand how this offers any sway control. There are no friction points to stop the trailer once it starts moving. I understand loading the trailer properly should stop the sway but there are many more factors to it like semi driving past you, wind, road conditions. Those all play a part in sway. I really would like to see a side by side towing video between this hitch and a normal WDH before I spend the money on this one.

B&W tells us that the sway is controlled by the weight of the trailer being properly distributed and via the connection of the system to the trailer and at its connection to the vehicle. We'll ask our video production folks to set up a side to side comparison.

I felt the same when I saw this. I have no doubt it's probably one of the better weight distribution options on the market, but I'm not sure if I believe it has anywhere near the kind of sway control that the more traditional options have. I'm gonna wait for some other reviews. I was looking into a propride, and while it has it's benefits, this is also an interesting system at half the cost.

    Great review !
Question ?? Is the 600 lb-1600 lb the lowest tongue weight available. My 16 FQ has a tongue weight from the factory of about 488 lbs. I’m sure with my storage bin and under bed it’s a bit more but to little tongue weight isn’t good either !! Any help would be appreciated.

    • @etrailer
      @etrailer  Год назад +1

600 lbs is the lowest tongue weight figure the B&W Continuum is compatible with. We'd recommend loading the camper up as you normally would, then determine the tongue weight when it's fully loaded. You'll also want to add to that the weight of anything stowed in the bed/cargo area of the tow vehicle that sits behind the rear axle. Here's an article that explains a few ways to figure out what your tongue weight is.

We have a 27 FBT Airstream Globetrotter trailer. There is not much space between the jack, propane tanks and batteries. Curious how I would attach the hydronic pump which on this video is between the jack and propane tanks. Thank you!

According to B&W, the pump assembly would need to sit about 4 inches forward of the forward edge of the propane tank/cover. If you check out the linked install details, you can see the relevant dimensions...

My father-in-law has a 2019 Ford F250 super duty with the 6.2 gas and at the time I he had a 34 foot travel trailer that weighed around 10k loaded he had the pro pride weight distribution hitch I drove it and when you hit a bump it would bounce way too much so I talked him into getting upgraded shocks it was a night and day difference and also replace the tires to 10 ply to stiffen up the side walls which also helped with sway . Weight distribution hitches are a great thing, but you also have to look at other aspects of the trailer and the truck

One concern for me would be the short shank, and being unable to lower the tailgate when hooked up.

If your trailer has an A-frame jack that doesn't hit the tailgate, you'll be fine with the Continuum, check out the video and the thumbnail photos on the linked product page:

A trailer with an 8000 lb loaded weight would have a tongue weight ranging from 800-1200 lbs. For that weight range, the # BW78FR B&W Continuum is what we'd recommend. For better sway control, go with the Equal-i-zer # EQ37120ET which is quite a bit less expensive and offers sway control that would be more effective.

B&W says that the ability of the Continuum to really dial in the proper amount of weight distribution as well as the hitch connection to the trailer and the shank that attaches to the tow vehicle is what provides the sway control.
