Carbon offsets is in my opinion are not solutions, they are excuses to continue environmentally destructive manufacturing and consumption practices. Things like paying for trees to be grow don't account for the damage done to the environment by the carbon you've released before the trees can even start filtering it out there.

So doesnt this mean that its the power sources that is the enviromental issue and not the technology itself? I would love to see what the enviromental impact would be if the entire operation happened in a country with high ammounts of clean energy, like Norway/Sweden.

Everything that the consumer society has in their homes, from their 80 inch TVs to their electric cars produces more carbon footprint than some vulgar nfts (jpegs), the energy required to manufacture physical products is infinitely greater than that used in the emission of a virtual item. Nfts and cryptocurrencies are the scapegoat to which it is easy to blame global warming (as if that will solve anything lol). Meanwhile, just making the batteries of a Tesla consumes tons of water and making the rest of the car itself (chassis, electronics, upholstery, tires..) has a gigantic carbon footprint that everyone pretends to ignore. In my day this was called hypocrisy.
