  • Cold starting my 1986 buick regal. 16deg. F outside, or -9C. Stock, unaltered (other than me tuning it up) from the junkyard. Oldsmobile 307 4bbl without a choke (heat stove is stripped out, can't put tension on the clockspring)

I almost bought a 1981 Regal when I was 18. Probably a good thing I didn’t or else I wouldn’t have gotten the K-car I found a few weeks later that I really wanted (and I still have it, too).

I have the same car, fully restored with a 355 olds rocket. right around 450 hp. high 11s in the quarter and smokes bigblocks all day. i love the car and will never get rid of it

Starts fairly well for a busted old carburetor with no choke. Olds 307's are very dependable if nothing else.
I've got one in my Cadillac, she starts as fast as a fuel-injected car in the cold.

My 84 Buick Electra had the same exact motor. Gotta love them Buick's.

    Choke's an easy fix:
Go to Lowe's and buy 3 self-tapping screws slightly larger than the stripped holes, and you are good to go.
Adjust the choke cold. With it in the high idle position, tighten choke coil until the plate just closes, then loosen until it starts to open up.Should be good.

Vynl top looks good on it, make sure to keep it waxed. The car also looks pretty loaded, nice find.

I prefer fuel injection to carbs anyday :) To each his own. Fuel inj. is harder to initially wire, plumb, and get going, but driveability is leagues better than the best carb, power is comprable, and you have more low-end. Plus, like you said, better gas mileage...lol

my olds starts up well...just his carb..those gm rochester whatever they are carbs, are pretty bulletproof from what i remember?

cool video. I love the long cranking. Only thing I notice: the sound is not in sync with the video. But that's minor.

Oh, hush up. 307's are great engines for durability. If the choke was working, that thing would've fired right up.

It starts just fine, now. Not that it matters, the 455 is going in this weekend, supposed to be warm (mid 40's F.)

There is definitely a problem with fuel delivery on this unit sounds like the choke setting is way too lean or your accelerator pump is dried out...had several 305 5.0 litre LG4 cars and they started as easy as 2 or 3 pedals of gas and usually about 4 or 5 revolutions if it was really cold... northern Alberta Canada minus 40 is not uncommon

  • @eldo59
    @eldo59 11 лет назад +1

I can see where it was harder to start in the cold. If there was more than half a tank of gas in there, I can bet it would fire up faster.

Manual clearly states: Press gas pedal to floor once, hold for a sec, then a second time, hold for a sec, let off, then turn ignition key. Usually works on mine with 64k miles on it. It does help if it's started on the regular though, but just sayin' read the freaking manual, lol!

Did you think to make sure it had fuel before you cranked through engine? Apparently, the fuel gage reads “E.” It should have not taken so many attempts to get this engine to start. I could have got this to fire on the first attempt...

Carbureted. I sold the car to a person in Nanticoke....but I kept my engine..
    He's putting in an olds 455 :)

No harder than driving any rear wheel driver. It's just harder to start...lol
It's actually very good in the snow, I drove it in snowstorms where people were shaking thier heads (because I didn't use my 4x4)

I can rebuild the carb myself (I have experience with these ridiculous things) if I bothered with them. (I prefer fuel injection, and this car will get it someday, installed and tuned by me.) I tuned this one but the choke adj. screws are stripped out, so I can't adjust it. Car runs great once it's running initially, it's just starting it when below freezing that it's a bit hard. The choke thing is easy fix, but I'm putting a 455 in it anyway, so why bother? I'm daily driving this thing, btw.

Those are very rare with the 307 V-8 most of them had the garbage 3.8L V-6 2BBL carb and way underpowered.

Chris Lemaster Perhaps they were, but i personally owned two 307 powered regals. I would like to find a 3.8 powered one to throw my rebuilt 350 buick in it

@@twoeightythreez I had an '85 Regal with the 231. It was a serious dog. Reliable though, when I got rid of it in 1997 it had 131,000 miles and didn't leak, smoke, or burn oil.
That 3.8 was so underpowered until GM went with MPFI and changed the cam/timing on it for 1988. Then it became one of the best motors they ever built.

Could you kindly replace the tone in this Buick with a loud scary buzzer since a buzzer would suit this 1986 Regal better than a tone?

$600, but did nothing to it other than get it inspected, titled, registered and get 4 tires and a battery, to get it on the road.

  • @twoeightythreez

It would have fired up really fast if it had a choke.
