- 2010 was a weird year in the theme park industry. We started seeing signs that the industry was coming out of the Great Recession, but in other areas it was clear that we were still in hard times. These are the top 10 events that changed the theme park industry from 2010.

Honestly this is probably my favorite series you’ve ever done
For sure. They're great for fans of the industry in general
The quizzes are great too
But by the numbers is close.
yeah
The Hard Rock Park story is one of my favorite “what if” stories in the industry, namely what if it had opened in a better economic climate. A music-themed theme park is something I would honestly love to see, maybe with different areas themed to different music genres.
Also, I definitely had some PTSD when you showed those vuvuzelas…
Myrtle Beach really needs something big, they've lost two water parks in the last 5 years and only have Family Kingdom and Myrtle Waves.
It was an absolutely fantastic park that just had the worst of circumstances. I am incredibly grateful I was able to get to enjoy all of the rides, though I remember very little of them. So much unique (for a theme park) IP that was actually done incredibly well. And yes, it *did* have different areas themed to different genres - despite the name, I believe there were five or six areas, each with their own genre of music. Rock, Country are two I remember for sure, but I know there was some individual bands as well. I think Queen was one of them, but remembering back a decade and a half to then is hard.
I loved this park and actually had season pas there. It had some really unique coasters and rides and probably one of the best dark rides ever.
Agreed! It looks so cool! I wish it would've worked
What about when thirteen opened at alton towers? It was the world's first free fall drop track coaster. It opened in 2010 as well
2010 was a memorable year for me. Kentucky Kingdom is my home park and when it was abandoned by Six Flags, it broke my heart. Luckily, Ed Hart is a genius.
Same. I was on a senior school trip at the time and I heard it from a friend or family member
Great video. 2010 was one of the most monumental years for me personally, regarding coasters. Growing up in SoCal it’s the year I finally rode Xcelerator (coincidentally, on the day it reopened from the cable snap in 2009… by pure luck - it was 4/26/2010), finally rode Supreme Scream, and most of all, finally visited SFMM. Superman had just closed for its transformation so I barely missed riding the forwards version. I would also say 2010 was the year I started following the current industry (rather than reading/watching old documentaries) and started following the construction for the 2011 rides like NTG, Dare Devil Dive, Cheetah Hunt, etc. I love this series.
You are flat-out awesome, the quantity and quality of your output. This history is not just fascinating, it’s important to document and interpret. Incredible what happened in just a single year. And this, of course, is just the United States!
Thanks! Its supposed to be a world wide list and the Paramount and Formula Rossa stories show that but oftentimes the big most covered events happen in the US
Not only does he make good videos, he's a nice guy IRL. Met him at Magic Mountain on December 23rd In line for Wonder Woman Golden Lasso Coaster.
2010 was pretty memorable for me. Not really a lot of positive, but if one positive thing did come out of it, it was my first major coaster credit. The infamous Desert Storm.
This series never disappoints, another great job! Thanks for all the hard work you put into making the videos in this series top notch!
I’m hoping in the near future Intamin re releases the Intamin giga from retirement with their new track and trains. I think with those changes, it could give a park an elite coaster
I'm really hoping that Busch Gardens Tampa taps Intamin for a giga in the near future. That park should see the value in it, since their most popular ride is an Intamin.
Great video, it’s always interesting to watch these and learn more about what happened while I was just a happy go lucky attendee who wasn’t too privy on what was actually going on in the industry
Been watching your videos since 2018. You are one of the best when it comes to doing their homework love it keep up the great work, not only entertaining but informational as well
I love this series, Chris 🎉 what is your degree in? Marketing? If so, it’s served this channel well lol 👍🏼
great video, this series is fantastic
2010 was the year I first visited Cedar Point. What a great graduation gift. I also got to visit Canada's Wonderland to get the CF platinum pass before heading down to CP. Good memories 🙂
Chris I know others have done this, but a video of your thoughts and comparison of the upcoming Epic Universe coasters would be great to see! Great job on this one as always
Are there more known aside from the Mack dual launch coasters?
@@AirtimeThrills Definitely! Besides the main hub dueling coasters there’s three: The Donkey Kong mine cart coaster, How to Train your Dragon intamin launch coaster, and a Universal Monsters Mack indoor spinning coaster!
I remember getting my first rides on Duelling Dragons and Incredible hulk in the summer of 2010 along with a lot of other memories from Universal and Disney
2010 will always be remembered for me as the year My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic started, a show that would create one of the weirdest fandoms in internet history
wake up babe new airtime thrills vid
RIP Will Koch! ❤️😭
2010 was the year I got back into riding coasters, after a decade and a half of not doing it at all. What did it was that I had a little kid who had gotten just old enough to appreciate amusement parks, and we lived 20 minutes away from Canobie (where I had actually never been despite living in the Boston area since 1990). So we went there a couple of times, and on the second visit that summer, I took a ride on the old Yankee Cannonball. And then I discovered RUclips POVs and got into following the enthusiast community. And the following year, Canobie built a new coaster (funny, that was one of the projects in your very first honorable-mention headline). And I was kind of doomed.
So this is pretty much the point where I start remembering stuff that happened.
Almost the same exact situation I had, I got back into it when my daughter was old enough to ride things at Magic Mountain back in 2015.
@@AirtimeThrills Mine turned out not to be much of a coaster fan though! She liked family rides as a little kid, but didn't graduate to the big stuff. It's fine, I didn't either at her age.
13 @ Alton Towers?
I'd honestly consider putting Harry Potter world a little higher. Sure it doesn't really impact the thrill parks like Cedar Fair or Six Flags, but in the battle between Universal and Disney, far and away the biggest parks in the country, Harry Potter World is arguably the most significant event since the openings of Animal Kingdom and Islands of Adventure. The land completely changed the standard for Amusement park lands and park theming, and ever since both major chains have been trying to match the success of Harry Potter, dropping millions of dollars on lands for Toy Story, Star Wars, Avatar and even Super Mario. Harry Potter completely revolutionized amusement parks and the start of a Theming War just as large as the coaster wars.
And now we get Epic Universe too! Universal pretty much just said Disneys 70yrs as theme park kings are over lol.
Honestly I remember the anxiety that Six Flags was going to go all the way under and sell Magic Mountain to a real estate developer.
This series is great and great video as always
Highlights for me in 2010:
1) Opening weekend for Intimidator 305. I rode it 10+ times on Easter Sunday with the original hard restraints and before the turnaround was reprofiled.
2) Visiting my friends in Colorado and visiting Elitch and Lakeside. Elitch taught me what true mediocrity means as far as amusement parks go.
3) East Coast Bash with TPR at Kings Dominion. Epic ERT on Volcano, Flight of Fear (with the lights on!), and I305.
4) First visit to Knoebels and Hershey. Fell in love with Phoenix and Storm Runner
Best one of these so far!!!
the vuvuzelas haunt me in my dreams
2010 was the first year I kept track of coaster related news. Formula Rossa and I305 were all over the news, and no company came close to Intamin and B&M. RMC was just beginning, mack just got into the thrill market, and modern Vekoma didn’t exist yet
Ah yes the last year before we were bombarded with the RMC revolution
Six flags new ceo is a whole different video in itself. 😂
Babe wake up, airtime thrills just posted
LOVE YOU AIRTIME!!!!
Absolutely love this series!
It's always interesting to me to look at Cedar Fair and Intamin in 2010. I-305 usually gets the blame for destroying the relationship, but I'd contend it was Shoot-the-Rapids at Cedar Point. Opened late below Intamin's advertised capacity and couldn't stay open for any length of time for it's whole time at the park.
I have to agree on Shoot-the-Rapids being the straw that broke the camel's back. Intimidator 305 had a similar problem to Maverick in that it had to be re-profiled, but as far as I know the ride itself runs pretty smoothly most of the time. Shoot-the-Rapids was a major headache, and its 2014 derailment exposed a huge design flaw that, coupled with the manintence of other Intamin rides at CP being difficult, was enough to make Cedar Fair decide Intamin was unreliable and not worth partnering with anymore.
I305 didnt help but i am sure shoot the rapids was a better reason
Enjoyed the history lesson. I'm wondering if Cedar Fair will give Canada's Wonderland another B&M. Last one was Yukon Striker in 2019.
Things that only seem to happen to me, ride a brand new Intamin in its opening year and no breakdowns. Then 8 years into it being open I break down on the drop track.
@studio732jrl2 no, I went on it multiple times in between.
The start of the 2010's decade
Great video, do 2006 sometime.
Its on the list. Only a few more years left that i can do
With me . Kentucky kingdom was a hard pill to swollow. Did it suck it happend yes. Now with hard rock park. It’s main issue was it was like 5-10 miles from the beach or so. Most of the traffic that went on that interstate by the park was either coming or going to Myrtle beach not hard rock.
Can you say the headlines as there done, I listen to your videos and its kinda a fun game to figure out what the headline is but it would still be nice if you did.

I thought Lady A’s SOTY was announced in the 2011 video.
Its possible i screwed that up
I’m proud to say that this was the first year of my life 😎
Yeah the financial crash of 08 really impacted the theme park industry arguable for the worst. I remember six flags was particularly struggling, and that is why for the next decade there was hardly any originality in terms of new coasters.
They were already going down the tubes. The crash was the knockout blow but I wonder if they would have gone bankrupt even without it
Me and my wife sat watching and when it got it #2 thought that Th13teen opening that year was going to be number 1 as it hasn’t been mentioned yet.
Still interesting series though
Yeah it could have been mentioned due to the first drop track but aside from that I didn't see the significance of it in the big picture
I guess cause it’s our home park we got excited about it 😂
You forgot about the BP Oil Spill in the beginning
Ah yes the ole BP oil spill
I thought the Haiti earthquake was in like 2012. Very enlightening
Yeah it was in the first couple weeks of 2010
EVERYONE. *START. YOUR. ENGINES!!!*
I think there’s definitely an argument to made for Sky Rocket at Kennywood to make this video. If that wasn’t a success, we might not have any of the Sky Rocket 2’s, full throttle, Ice Breaker, west coast racers, etc.
Sky Rocket really launched the second era of Premier Rides launch coasters!
Very true
2010, the last time I ever rode a roller coaster. Thunderhead at Dollywood. Just before my car accident. 😢
Ah that stinks :(
@@AirtimeThrills it totally does but I still enjoy watching coaster videos and learning about the technical side of things. 🙂
Could You Do Pros And Cons Six Flags Great Adventure
Thatd be an interesting one
@@AirtimeThrills It Used To Be My Home Park
But Then Again I Was GP And Scared Of Coasters Like I Was Sweating On Skull Mountain And Almost Lost My Hat On Runaway Mine Train Lol Also Cons Locker POLICY ,
I would really like to go back to 2010, because I was still in California before it got real crazy! Haha
Idk if ur willing to say or know but when’s the first episode of the new documentary droping
As of now its looking like early May
@@AirtimeThrills aight, thanks
Do you think The New Mexico Rattler here in Albuquerque will ever get RMC'd!? Mannn I'd LOVE that. The Rattler is the only coaster in our state. Wish it wasn't so rough
It is crazy rough, but I doubt Cliff's would pay for that
I thought Six Flags also retained ownership of Chang when they closed Kentucky Kingdom since they moved it to Great Adventure and named it Green Lantern.
That move may have already been in the works before this whole thing went down with the board. The article I read specifically said they could choose one ride to retain ownership of and that was the wild mouse. Chang must have already been off the table
Been a hot minute since we've had "Events That Changed the Theme Park Industry" video.
Last one was 2 months ago, 2004 edition
Wow, feels weird to be this early..
I've been in food service for my whole adult life and I can't imagine a place charging a dollar for food. It's like it's only a dollar, so it's nor that big a deal, but I feel like that goes both ways to it not even making sense why they would bother. From what I saw from interview to work in a cedar point kitchen there can't be THAT many employees, like maybe a few hundred a day. Hopefully they weren't super strict and wouldn't let people go hungry if they forgot their dollar.
It sounds petty but it was kind of annoying, especially considering how much they paid us lol
what about thirteen with the new vertical drop track
Intimidator cursed us at kings dominion
love the seires, could ypu do 2011 or 1975?
2011 yes. I still havent figured out how to do this pre-internet coaster forums
Somehow, even in random amusement park videos, Dan Snyder is still a villain
It isn’t a coincidence that Six Flags America, which isn’t necessarily the best park in the chain, is located very close to the home of the Washington Commanders.
You totally left out thirteen from alton towers - first drop track
7:54 dayum alonso
como es AUGHHHH
Honestly I love the idea of a Michael Jackson theme park! I wish it would've happened!!
