Those rides are so mechanical. From the kick start to shifting to the rattling as it reliably runs down the road. It's the whole experience that I love.

So when I was 16 my neighbor owned a big logging company. He was 81 at the time. He had a barn full of cool cars and bikes he had bought over the years. I was buying a Datsun 240z from him for a v8 swap and he had one of these bikes and offered it to me and me being an idiot teenager said nah I’m good.

I had a chance to buy a 1970 GTO Judge, in 1981 when I was 16, for $2500. Dad said no V8's and I got a 65 Bug. Still hurts to this day,but I did love my Bug.

The problem with an old Indian Chief not keeping up with todays traffic speeds is entirely a mechanical issue. I have a 47 Chief and have no trouble running 80 mph. Why? Because I changed the transmission sprocket from a 22 tooth to a 24 tooth, a $30 simple modification. These sprockets were available from sizes 18 tooth to 26 tooth depending what accessories you attached to the bike like a sidecar or sedan delivery! I have a sidecar for the bike so when I attach it, I change the trans sprocket to a 19 tooth so I don’t wear out the clutch and yes! It does about 55-60 mph top speed with sidecar.
I also gap my points at .19 thou instead of 21. Then I changed my carburetor to a Keihin which is modern day with an accelerator pump. It cost me $50 used at a swap meet, but to start the bike I just prime it 3 times, retard it a quarter turn, flip on the choke about halfway with the kicker on the power stroke and it fires right up.
In order to get it to the 100mph category, there are hot cams available aftermarket that are 3/4 lift type called Schunk cams developed by a guy name Rick Schunk, but who wants to go 100 miles an hour on an antique cruiser bike?
By the way, a few years back I was visiting some friends from Connecticut and I had his wife on the back of my old Chief and the husband was on his Honda Dream. We were on our way to a restaurant on a two lane highway approaching a steep hill. We both geared down and rolled it on. Well! I walked away from him like he was standing still, and he started rolling his legs and feet like he was pedaling a bicycle trying to keep up. We were roaring with laughter! 😮😅😂 It’s all in the set up you have for your purpose of the machine.
