- Legendary singing star Connie Francis talks with Miami Herald reporter Steve Rothaus about her personal experience with mental illness, as well as the 50th anniversary of her iconic Fort Lauderdale spring break film classic, 'Where the Boys Are.' Produced by Steve Rothaus and Gaby Izarra.
She will always be a star. I met her in her Coral Springs concert. She greeted every fan, signed every autograph. She is a true star. No attitude problems like these so call "modern singers". She deserves a star in Hollywood and many more. But Connie, I live in Miami,Florida and us Floridians adore you. God bless you always. You are our star here in the sunshine state.
Warrior woman. Still with us. You are not alone. Mental health only makes you stronger. Keep going folks.
Connie will never be forgotten by anyone who has heard her voice. Asylums were a nightmare for anyone in those days, it was probably also a "control" thing. People need to be loved and cared for, but others sometimes feel they are powerless. Easier said than done as the fame spirals out of control, with fickle fans always prepared to hate their idols due to envy, but also easy to see what she could have been, Tragedy and abuse through the envy and greed of others have wrecked many a star. Sadly.
So brave of you Connie to speak out about the terrors in your life. I love your songs as much now as I did as a teenager way back then. Good luck to you and keep singing.
Such a beautiful lady. Thank you for posting this. She's an inspiration for everyone who struggles in life.
Still so beautiful--your songs do speak of real life..
You are a beautiful lady and have an angelic voice. You live in my home with all of your music. I am one of your fans. My mum loved you and I love you also. I am so very very sorry that you had suffered this appalling experience. You are loved by many all over the world. Many blessings. Big HUGS to you. ❤💙❤💙👍
thank you for speaking out in behalf of a great number of us women in America that do suffer every day with depression - I am your age - not even the medical community try and understand or listen to us - they want us to just disappear and not be seen or heard - God Bless You My Dear Connie
Sorry god is not a factor in this mental illness...if so god is a cruel motherfuker.
when you see Him it would be interesting to hear your answer when He asks you about your comment.
She is such an inspiration to everyone going through some sort of mental illness. She is the best!
I am almost 50 years old, but since the late 60's I have enjoyed listening to her songs... Go Go Go Connie... your songs were so beautifully performed...
A wonderful singer and an inspiration - a true survivor!
What a strong Woman with all that Tragic in her Life. Here in Germany we love her as well. In the 60ties she was Nr1 in our Charts for Weeks.
what a lovely woman!!! i just watched Where the Boys Are on TCM I was 10 when it was made and always loved it. I too, suffer from depression so I understand what Ms. Francis went through in life. If you read this Connie I am so glad you are here in new jersey and was so candid about your life . I too am Italian and Irish, sorry about that, HA Ha. God Bless always, Ruthie Schmidt
always love you.Our angel connie.xxoo
I took my mom to see Connie Francis at the Valley Forge Music Fair on December 12, 1994, for Mom's 70th birthday. Her and Connie also shared the same birthday. It was a night she treasured for the rest of her life. Thanks so much Connie. We Love You!💗💗
For some reason I thought Connie Francis, deep in her depression, had decided to go to sleep and never awake. She was successful...several years ago. God bless you, Connie Francis, for my mistake and seeing youtubes of you today. Living with someone who is bipolar I really commend you on handling it that made for many more years of us being able to enjoy you and seeing you have a handle on the struggles that have come to your life. God has you here because he knows you still need to be here for us and moreso for you. One classy and ever so beautiful, inside and out, person. An inspiration.
god then had her raped according to your illogical thinking... FU

Connie, you are forever green and great. Your songs make us younger.
It was great to see this video of Connie Francis, what a remarkable woman she is, and her singing voice is still there in all its glory, we all change through life, and Connie looks fabulous, i am 64 and hope i look like her at her age...God bless her.
Heartfelt respect for this colossal talent.
It people like Connie that make a difference great lady great voice. Thx for posting.
As a 70 year old man I remember the beautiful Connie Francis with that wonderful and amazing voice. Why would anyone hurt such a great woman? She is still beautiful and amazing to me.
Beautiful Connie Francis with one of the most beautiful awe inspiring voices ever!!!
sorry to hear this they can hurt u body but not the soul god bless lov u music
In so many ways there is a little bit of Connie in all of us. First is as part of our fundamental music roots. Obviously Connie's own life has been difficult. Yet with all of that just hearing a few notes of one of her songs will lift my heart with hope. So despite, or maybe because of the contradiction between her own battles with depression, she has the ability to lift the depression of others. Connie, I wish you the very very best.
You have made your mark on many people your strength your sense of humor and your ability to take control even in the worst parts of your life .God Bless you Connie You are still beautiful inside and out.

@lipsdaz Totally agree with you! I met Connie last year in PA. She was fantastic! Greeted all her fans. She should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!
Much respect for this lovely woman much respect indeed.....The True American icon and Diva may i say.
My mam adores her, bringing her to see a Connie Francis tribute show in the National Concert Hall here in Dublin next wednesday, full orchestra, and a guy teams up with the lady doing Connie as Bobby Darren, should be a great show.
Bless her wonderful heart !!!
I saw her in Carrier Clinic when I was there for Manic Depression in the 1980's. She seemed so sweet standing in line in the coffee shop. Why do such good hearted and nice people end up with these mental health isssues? I have also been in hospitals several times throughout my life, divorced and mother of only one son. Gd bless her to live to 120. She deserves it.
CONNIE WAS, IS AND WILL ALWAYS BE NUMBER ONE!
I was so very fortunate and lucky to be with her on that most unique date of 12/12/12. CF4VR **
I saw connie back in the early 60s at wesbury l. I. new York.she still sing s very good.
Above n Beyond only one Great Female Singer Connie Francis
Connie. I haved loved you all my life 💖
Love Connie Francis. She is a reminder of what clean , youthful, talented, and classy means.
Such a gorgeous face spoiled by surgery though. It’s a tough dog eat dog business, but hey, we the fans have the last word: We love you Connie. Thanks for the music!👍❤️🌺
So sad what happened to her she is a survivor and a fighter i wish her happiness in her life she deserves it !
What a great woman
I loved her. And, to this day her voice was one of the most unique. Just beautiful!!! How these so called 'entertainers' of the present times can ever be called 'talent'' is beyond comprehension...... e.g. Britney Spears, Madonna, so many more squawkers.... too many to list. When actually the only talents they convey is how raunchy they can dress and squirm around on a stage. Singing has nothing to do with it. Only Celine Dion and Adelle, and a few more, can attain that status of beautiful , legit 'vocalists'. The days of Connie and true talents is wanning.
She still is the Queen of American music.
Connie is an amazing singer with a beautiful voice. These two tradedys that happened to her was so bad but she is a fighter
Nice.....Really nice
God Bless you, beautiful angel Connie love you forever 1-15-19
Love you Connie!
@confranfan ...Connie sounds strong and positive. Great to see!
Connie is alive and well at 75!
She use to hang out on the set with us when I did the TV seriesof Dirty Dancing. She was a hoot. Loved her.
God's blessings !!!
x love ya connie
You are a truely remakable woman.
wow how old is she is she still going strong
When I first saw "Where the Boys Are" I was truly amazed at how natural Ms. Francis was in her acting ability. Her relationship to the camera was unmatched by her costars. I just HATE that she was so sidetracked in her career by RAPE and the overbearing influence of her father. She's a legend who has withstood the tests of celebrity and humanity. God Bless You, Connie.
U were on the mark until you" blessed her" with the god bless shit. ..god was no where around when she was brutally beaten ed and raped, or was he ? ... U annot have it both ways.
Good for you Connie Francis..
CONNIE HÉRMOSA VOZ

When MY WIFE B gave birth to OUR Daughter A, I play Connie Francis MAMA n sing along with Connie to My (Moglia WIFE) MAMA, Joseph USMC r.-
It was gracious of the beautiful Connie Francis to mention her
experiences in her past. My favorite song was "Lipstick on your Collar" and "Mama," (in Italian). She always had/has such a magnificent.voice that went right through me.
It’s your imagination her voice is shot, nothing magnificent about her singing in this video
@@bobbypaluga4346 Due to the HELL Connie Francis went through, I liked listening to her sing, no matter how she sounds. That's why I said, she "had/has" such a magnificent voice. I'm not here to pass judgement on a Legend...
sadie garcia Noted, I know she’s had tough experiences in life, in fact no bodies life is easy. She doesn’t record anymore because her voice has degraded (she says) Her voice is rough and nasal sounding as is her singing voice. She’s 80 it might be a good time to wrap it up and have folks remember you by your recordings made during her prime. In the film “Where the boys are” her voice was primo. I’d watch it just for her singing there isn’t much of a story as with Elvis movies it’s just a vehicle for the music. At least some of her nasal sound is related to her facial surgery, I think she went a little too far with the face lifts. Nobody young or old is supposed to have skin so tight you can bounce a dime off her cheek.
@@bobbypaluga4346 "UNDERSTOOD!"
Connie and Vikki Carr were the 2 Greatest Female Pop singers of All-Time. No one will ever come close to them , no-one. They were the greatest and we will never see the likes of them again. God Bless You Connie .
In your opinion.
Im truly touched by your life story you are a beautiful woman inside and out they didnt take your sould , I aswell was molested in 2010 after being drugged in a bar by people who say were friends, my heart is with you and will forever love you and your music.
Poor lady has been through hell and back :(
Connie, ever think of performing in The Villages, Florida????
Your father was not a good man, he was cruel and by not understanding and giving you a tremendous amount of love and understanding he led you into a spiral of depression. I’m sorry about your stints in mental hospitals, may the Lord bless you, give your life to him, Jesus will give you a home in heaven. Love you God Bless you
I believe Connie sings MAMA for My (MOGLIA WIFE) B in heaven, I pray to join them n sing MAMA when We are together again.
God bless you,h hon.
Oh my God I want to get plastic surgery
No one does Italian better than Connie.
surprised she has doubled her weight
I love her. I’m a big fan. She has let this incident define her life for the last 44 years. She talks about her rape all the time. Please move on.
oh my god what they have do to her face ? plastic injury
Joe Pasternak discovered Judy Garland???? I think somone should set her staright....half the people she mentioned were not "discovered" by Pasternak at all. The few that Pasternak had a hand in, had their day and faded away...and the greatest of those was Deanna Durbin. As much as Ms. Francis would like to be seen in the same light light as the tragic Judy Garland...they have nothing in common. Not Pasternak, not musically, not in film, not as dancers, and certainly, not in life! Pasternak may have chased her around the country in order to get her to sign for "Where The Boys Are" but I can assure her that he never chased Judy anywhere...she was in other people's hands. Ms. Francis may like or need to embellish a bit but she has her own story and needs no one else to compare herself or her life to.
Who cares. The essence of Miss Francis message is quite clear and forthcoming and relevant to so many.
Uh-huh...I don't remember saying it wasn't!
Right. YOU said: "Joe Pasternak discovered Judy Garland???? I think somone should set her staright..." (miispelling was your too) I SAID: Who cares!
brian pinette Exactly how stupid do you wish to play this?...Are you unable to read or comprehend simple English or what? My reply to you states "....IT" wasn't...meaning the message you were referring to. My reply had nothing to do with the Pasternak info. It would have read differently had that been the case....You said "Who cares" to that info and I never said her mental health/drug message wasn't relevant. Since you pointed that out so specifically and said you didn't care about the rest, I should think that was what was important to you. I don't care if you like or dislike, appreciate or do not appreciate the Pasternak info...that's tough nuts kid! I know her to exaggerate and embellish when the moment suits her and it's not right or fair to the people who hang on her every word because of who she is.. It makes it difficult to trust the statements she makes at times. While I adore her music the other is an aspect of her personality I do not care for. People are entitled to hear the truth and should be told the truth. That situation also speaks to her state of mind but I won't go into that aspect with you. Oh yes, thanks for pointing out the typo...you're simply too, too kind!
Who cares? Move on.
2:40 OMG this is awful, her voice is gone. She was one of the greatest pop singers of all time, but sadly she has lost it. Frank Sinatra in his third comeback discovered the same thing, his voice could no longer hit the higher notes nor hold long notes. His My Way, and New York, New York, renditions paled to what they were when he originally sung them. Connie’s voice has a low rumble to it with what sounds like a lisp of some kind. It’s time to put away the suitcases and give up touring, she was so good for so long having so many hits anyone should be satisfied with.
