Definitely a Ballast is needed for a points system if it doesn't already have the resistance wire from the Ign switch. But I've always used MSD distributors and Coils which require full 12V and most certainly doesn't need a Ballast. That's according to the instructions. Am I getting this right, as some have said that no matter points or electronic, a ballast is a must.

pertronix recommends to bypass the ballast resistor when using their ignitor system they say if u have a coil of 0.5 or 0.6 you can keep the ballast but if you run a 1.5 or 3.0 ohm coil you must bypass ballast ..

Mustangs those years use a resistance wire right after the ignition switch under the dash. You will not see a typical resister under the hood.

Great job Joe. Pretty bad when the requirements are printed right on the coil and ignored.

Pink resister wire is in the harness if someone did not remove it.

They do a lot of talking without a lot of action.... plus the car will have a resistor, its the pink wire

Why not put a pertronix coil and pertronix ignition unit, the coil requires 12 Volts so you don't need a ballast resistor. Save the time and money on the ballast, get the new coil Will!

My friend has an 82 ford f 150 with a 302. No points in the distributor but has the OEM coil no resistor or blast resistor. It has been a wiring and mechanical nightmare. Being he bought the truck with it not running and leaves in the edelbrock carb.. I have no idea if it needs a ballast resistor.

Ha guys, Great video. I have a 4cyl. chevy on my boat. Installing electronic ignition. Do I need to consider a ballast resistor and or new coil to get the right volts for the new ignition system?
