My favorite thing about this song is that it's nearly five minutes long but it's just one event happening in slow motion over the course of- at most- ten seconds
this song is so melancholy. in the sense that it's sad, but in a warm way.
Yeah I think the lead singer says he likes finding happiness in sadness
That big major 7th chord when the keys come in is glorious.
Yup that's what gives it the warm, but sad texture. So fucking good
I fell on the playing field
The work of an errant heel
The din of the crowd and the loud commotion
Went deafening silence and stopped emotion
The season was almost done
We managed it 12 to 1
So far I had known no humiliation
In front of my friends and close relations
There's my father looking on
And there's my girlfriend arm in arm
With the captain of the other team
And all of this is clear to me
They condescend and fix on me a frown
How they love the sporting life
And father had had such hopes
For a son who would take the ropes
And fulfill all his old athletic aspirations
But apparently now there's some complications
But while I am lying here
Trying to fight the tears
I'll prove to the crowd that I come out stronger
Though I think I might lie here a little longer
There's my coach he's looking down
The disappointment in his knitted brow
"I should've known"
He thinks again
"I never should have put him in"
He turns and loads the lemonade away
And breathes in deep
The sporting life
The sporting life
The sporting life
How he loves...
There's my father looking on
And there's my girlfriend arm in arm
With the captain of the other team
And all of this is clear to me
They condescend and fix on me a frown
How they love the sporting life
The sporting life
The sporting life
The sporting life
How they love
It reminds me of early football when they wore those leather helmets.
This song really captures my life being pushed so hard in sports all of the time. No matter how hard I played it could
Never be enough....... unless my girlfriend was proud of me

Far from my favorite Decemberists song, but the line "I think I may lie here a little bit longer" hits so hard. Barely carries any meaning, but it sounds so pretty.
Lol yeah it's kinda funny cause he's more hurt than he wants to be lol
I LOVE THIS SONG
The Decemberists are so fun to harmonize to
Verse rhythm feels like an homage to The Smiths, but it is an old simple gospel beat.
Smiths was the first thing I thought too!
These guys even interpolate some of "This Charming Man" into their version. ruclips.net/video/ff3RieOmDKA/видео.html
Drums are addicting. Reminds me Lust for Life.
Addicting isn't a word
@@tomalophicon Is English not your first language?
I went off the Decemberists for a few years, but this classic is bringing me back.
This might be the most relatable song the Decemberists have ever done. I also like how the song rocks really hard, yet feels sad at the same time.
I can just imagine the music video now.
Me encanta esta canción y no entiendo por que ya no puedo ver el video ese donde un adolecente practicaba diatintos deportes y en todos le iba mal.
This whole album is just so fantastic.
This is fitting considering current affairs related to the Olympics.
I've got a lust for life and this song
2019... 💞💞
johnny manziel rookie season
I see what you did there.
2:12 Hey! Get your hands off of me!
All thanks to WPRB, Princeton.
I can smell the rapid station when I listen to this.
The drum pattern reminds me of Iggy Pop - Lust for Life..LOL
It goes back as far as The Supremes "You Can't Hurry Love", and probably to some old gospel record before that.
the doors "Touch me"
Michael Björk ie. The most generic drum beat ever.
Philip Larkin shut the fuck up
Philip Larkin nah, the money beat is objectively the most overused drum beat in existence.
Hmm.. the Decemberists.. i like it
i like this band because i like to read books and
Nice try dingus.

What happened to the fan made music video by some high schoolers?
I'm walking on the sunshine, WOAH OHOH

homestar runner
Sounds like a little Amy Winehouse riff
also Lust For Life by Iggy Pop
When I first heard this on the radio around 2001 or so, I thought it was such a cool composition, but now sounds not so great at all to me. Maybe i heard a different recording, one that emphasized the instrumental part more. I guess his voice just grates now.
First of all, this song didn’t come out till 2005. Second, it rules
2001? Try again smart guy.
Am I the only one who thinks this song is kinda sad?
You are not. It's supposed to be sad. It's about a guy who plays sports because his father makes him do it, but he's no good at it and he feels he's letting everyone down
Dudes a flake
