Hi! Loved the video, he’s fearless! I have a 4 year old that’s been backed but she’s incredibly nervous and we don’t have a lot of background but the way she flinches at whips and sticks sort of indicates she may have been abused. Do you have any tips on how we’d start introducing things to her? She rears and is terrified of all new objects which isn’t great when riding as she bolts.
Hi😊 I like to start building conferences on the ground in a quiet environment. If I have a horse who is afraid of whips I usually start by holding the lash of the whip and doing approach and retreat until I can touch the horse all over. Developing a young horse’ confidence takes time and patience, but there is nothing more rewarding than seeing a horse grow in this area. This is something I may do more videos on in the future. I wish you both success on your journey 💕🐴
So I’m getting a Tennessee Walker sometime soon and I know him pretty well because he is my uncles horse but I know he’s really scared of the whip because people have misused it on him before and I’ve watched my cousins try to desensitize him when I was younger and looking back on it now it was so wrong and probably traumatizing for him, what would be the safest and least stressful way to desensitize him from the whip specifically? Because if it’s only going to scare him worse I’d rather just teach him with pointing and clicks rather than a whip.
Hi😊 I think it’s great that you have your horse best interest at hart. Positive reinforcement can be a powerful tool when done correctly. Every horse is a unique individual.Without seeing you and your horse it’s difficult for me to give you exact advice. If you would like more specific help on this topic you can submit a video on my website under the rider critique section. I wish you success as you start this journey with your new horse🐴💕
how old is too old to break a horse of being spooky.... i jus acquired an 11 year old mare who is a good rider but is very spooky. ive been doing all the desensitizing drills but she doesnt really carry the knowledge into the next day
Hi 😊 This is a great question. The results of desensitizing vary from horse to horse. Horses who are older can take longer depending on their personality and past history. If a horse has a personality where he or she is naturally reactive, they may always be this way to some extent. Desensitizing reduces the severity of potential reactions, but just bare in mind your horses personality. On a positive note I have had several horses well into there teens who have gain confidence and improved after desensitizing.
I'd love to hear your experience if this helped you:). Also, feel free to share ideas or topics you would like to see in future videos!
You picked a great day! Windy days are the best!
Yes, it worked out great 😀
These are good tips, especially when you're getting into polo with polo ponies!
