I remember those old color console TV sets. There were color knobs on them that you had to turn if there was too much red, green, or blue in the picture. The cathode tubes inside could be replaced.
It sounds reasonable. According to Wikipedia the red phosphor (Y2O2S:Eu+Fe2O3) was the bottleneck for the development of colour TV so it wouldn't surprise me that is was also the 'weakest link'.
@Morpun I doubt that. These videos don't teach you about all the logic of chemistry. Your college must have taught you WHY these reactions occur, and give numbers to them.

Just leaving a comment here to break the 10-month comment hiatus.
Great stuff, Brady!

It absorbs neutrons...probably more than any other element. It's used in the control rods of some nuclear reactors.

no pictures of pure europium unlike other videos?
I remember old televisions going funny when displaying red. Does this have anything to do with europium?
Isnt Europium also used at "Atomic Absoption Analisis"?(sorry dont know to translate it)
Really useful, thanks:)
Anyone know what the green and blue pixels are made out of?
Cheers.
5 europium stars, fine sirs.
