DJ Yella Speaks on World Class Wreckin' Cru Days w/ Dr. Dre

- www.vladtv.com - DJ Yella sat down with us at VladTV and gave us some insight on his life pre-N.W.A. The Compton born and raised producer began to dabble in music at a young age - he was in the marching band in high school, and began DJ'ing soon after he left. He then began performing at teen parties where he met fellow N.W.A. member, Dr. Dre. "You see him, you see me, everywhere," DJ Yella remembers of their times together.
In this exclusive clip, DJ Yella also talks about his World Class Wreckin' Cru Days with Dre, more specifically their 80's shiny suits that he says "was for the women." He then goes on to talk about the transition from the Wreckin' Cru to N.W.A., and how they easily jumped right onto "the bigger ship." Catch it all above.
"Straight Outta Compton" - a biopic about the fearless group - is now in theaters. - Развлечения
He's like the nicest nwa member lol. He's got that "outgoing grandpa" quality in him.
Nate TheDaddy hahah lol I know. He had a calling.
Sid dan soooooo...........
+Nate TheDaddy that's a perfect example of him being the "outgoing grandpa"
TF is that
He was all about the bitches , never about the fame or money💯
Yella seems like a cool dude. His character in the movie was funny as hell.
The actor who played him did a good job playing a seal on SIX
Hell isn't funny tho
@@jadthemagnificent it’s hellarious
Good to see dj yella can finally dress in all black. (any one who seen the movie understands)
SupRcHerrY funniest shit
yo
You mind telling me what the fuck happened to your situation? That Skateland scene was hilarious.
Or anyone who is an actually fan of the group
Underated comment 😂😂😂
DJ Yella didn't give a fucc about the No Vaseline diss 😂
he said that shit was dope 😂
Yeah to his defense he wasn't dissed nearly as bad as the others especially Eazy E. E was destroyed in that song I'm sure he didn't like it much even D.O.C. Said that.
+AFBN eazy didnt fucking care
He was only briefly mentioned in the verse "Fuckin' MC Ren, Dr. Dre, and Yella."
@@nofaygo7227 Yella boy on your team so your losing
Ayo dre stick to producing
..... Bruh smokey robinson u think u slick
yella: *makes a song called 'straight outta compton*
vlad: ''where'd you grow up?''
Husam Hanieh cube is t from Compton... what’s your point? They very easily could’ve lived in Watts or any other surrounding hood.
SneakySnake Clash Royale I’m sorry bro but you live a lie and we’re taught a lie in hip hop NWA were all fakes and Dre was gay and cube is from San Bernardino and all you have to do is search Alonzo Wright Vlad interview and he’s the one who met cube when he was 15 they were not good at all except EAZY E was the only street one and the gov got involved in there group Dre actually stole all his hot beat songs even on chronic from other people 2pac said it and other producers came out and said Vlad interview him and people in Compton know they all loved a lie except Easy e who died....gov is involved in a lot bro Micheal Jackson’s death is crazy to he was murdered and worked to death do your research on free mason aka illuminate spirits etc. if your atheist your probably like wtffff but wake up. Also watch vontoocuts 6hr video on exposing the matrix it has proof of everything in 6hrs just look at the like count as well 500k views to.

@@premesteeze you are an idiot
I have mad respect for Mr. Yella, but what's up with the beats phones on during the interview? Product endorsement? It just looked out of place...
Yella's role in the movie was hilarious.
I could listen to the OGs speak all day long... Interesting, interesting stuff.
Galan Destroyer real talk
A lot of respect to this man he goes way back and played a big part in the evolution of Hip Hop
We need more Yella interviews and some MC Ren interviews asap
After seeing the movie, I liked Yella even more. He was so funny and coo'. He just wasn't worried about nothin'. He's kinda giving me a clay-face tease though. Good interview.
The way he said Born & Raised you expected "On the playground is where i spend most of my days" after..
So glad I got to experience the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's.
How old are you?
@@dibbage 3000 years
It's crazy (not really since they're all producers/consultants) how accurate everybody got portrayed in the movie. Except Dre, I think they made him tougher than what he really is, but I get it. The Felecia scene had me dying! 😂😂😂😂
P.S. Yella was an underrated producer. The track he produced on Eazy's last album was sick! Too bad E passed before he got to spit on it.
Dymez its funny how nobody is buying that tough guy act the portrayed Dre out to be. Im not either lol, when he sock dude for his brother Ty I was looking like is that Dre doing that shyt lol.
+itzhim313 😂😂😂 Hell yeah, and standing up to Suge and his goons, pushing them and shit. 😂 Man please! This dude his only known for hitting females, and they ain't show him lay his hand on one the whole damn movie??? You know Dre gassed his character all the way up. 😂😂😂
Dymez - I was laughing at that through the movie. Dre took some bleach to this movie and cleaned the shit out of his character
seemed like dude was as funny in real life as he was in the movie! but they didn't depict him as important of a dj as i think he was to the group
Remi Cole Thats what I thought too, him and Ren was kinda left out the main story, they both were very essential to NWA success as well as Ren did a lot of raps and Yella produced alongside Dre on a lot of the songs
+Remi Cole The one question that I want asked is, "How do you feel toward the depiction in the movie in terms of your character?"
+MaddMike Ren is arguably the best rapper in the group but not an essential reason that the group formed or dissolved. Also, Ren did not achieve independent business success outside of the group. I also wish that his character was explored a bit more, but understand why it wasn't.
+Mina M The movie was very biased, Dre and Cube made themselves look really good and made everyone else look shitty.
Vlad with the terrible question out the gate... where are you from??
Lol like its the most important thing the listeners should know about and not the substance
Not all NWA members from Compton
J Rio he knows where he is from. its what interviewers do to get stories or background info.
+J Rio Most people who conduct interviews know the majority of the answers to their questions. That's why it's called "conducting" an interview. The questions are for the benefit of the audience.
+J Rio "Where you from?" and "Whose idea was it to wear those clothes?" were the only bad questions in an otherwise great interview.
when dj yella made the NWA mixes, the perfect beats.
"All about the women". Hell Yea!!!
From world class wrecking crew to NWA to... Porn.
Nice reference lol 😂
Watch a WCWC video and you'd think it'd surely be gay porn
Yella and Ren stayed down with E till the end. I stayed a fan of all of them, even in the midst of all of the beef. I bought anything Ruthless, Dre and Cube.
Tommy Vercetti - The content was falling though man, like a big ass rock. Every album got worse and worse without Cube's intelligence in the words.
Tommy Vercetti - We all did, but deep down everyone knew Cube was the guy. Not a coincidence that he shot out while the others stayed stagnant at the time. The first 4 Cube albums are certified classics. NWA were tumbling after he left and everybody was looking for that same vibe that never came back. 100 miles and runnin and Niggaz4life were decent efforts and had bangers, but not on Cube's level at all.
Nate TheDaddy Dre had the best beats, Cube had the best lyrics, and Eazy had the most charisma, that voice was the heart n soul of NWA.
Tommy Vercetti - Not sure about charisma as I am that he had a distinct voice. I think it was his voice that gave life to those rhymes. When I see old interviews, he didn't seem that full of personality.
Nate TheDaddy The music, that's what counts. I've seen video of them performing in the past few years, even with Cube - just isn't the same without Eazy.
I could listen to this brotha tell a "back n da day" story anytime. Cool dude.
WOW! He never mentions alonzo williams. At least give the man some credit where credit is due on the wreckin crew. smh.
Thats what i was thinkin... Unknown dj, !?!? 😏
Right!
He mentioned Lonzo.
Ice Cube was in Stereo Crew first, then CIA then NWA.
This reminds me of the movies CB4 & Malibu's Most Wanted - when you examine their moronic behavior (or lack thereof), ask yourself - 'What's the difference between them & Jamie Kennedy's character? Dre & Cube seem so much like 'BloodBath' (Taye Diggs character) in MMW..Straight ACTORS
The good thing with Yella's interviews is that you know he'll speak the unbiased truth, cause if a subject comes up that he wasn't sure about he told VLAD he wasn't going to answer lol
DJ Yella hella cool!!!
I wish Vlad talked more about the making of "Turn Off The Lights" with Michel'le?!
Is it a future dis?
*****
Michel'le spoke about that with Vlad, Yella, Alonzo didnt talk about it, unless they did and it hasnt been released yet by Vlad
One of realist left in the rap game
Yella turned natural rhythm into a few different careers. Synching downstrokes to porn soundtracks takes rhythm too.
😂😂😂😂
People always talked about what the World class Wreckin Crew wore, back in the 80's before gangster rap really took off, everyone was trying to look like Prince or Morris Daye and the Time. Fresh pair of baggies on and a shirt that the lady's would like would get you action back in the 80's, I use to wear my Baggies and had a Izod tiger shirt on with my break dancing bandanas and hats.
Hearing yella speak, the guy in the movie nailed his personality.
Good point. 8 Mile was a good movie. Too soon forgotten.

Darius Dickerson i agree dude has a great personality when being interviewed
One of his brova'z iz A dentist...use to live on my block in the 90's...
Vlad didn't even want to interview yella it seems like. Saying yup. Yea. Ok. Before yella even finished his sentence
I feel like in "Next Friday" pinky was supposed to portray Alonzo 💀
I give the movie a solid B. Not outstanding & not lame. Not enough time to include all the major issues that went on. Cube's son did a hell of a job! Dre and Eazy's characters did a good job as well. MC Ren's character (played by that skinny dude with the jeri curl in the movie "The Wood") didn't have enough lines. Snoops character looked nothing like him and only sounded like him for 2-3 secs.
They look pretty similar. Just like I prejudged it was the same actor, you prejudged that I'm white. Guess we're both wrong... Hilarious!!!
Wow, ok. I'm a 39 yr old black man from the east side of CLE. You sound like a damn fool. LOL
Negro please, I don't have to validate my "blackness" for yo dumb ass.
Lol black people haven't bean able to like each other since the 70s look at this shit here^
Love hearing the real story!
Yella is the coolest one out the group
Yella always seemed like a cool dude.
I'd much rather watch a movie made by Yella. He was there through it all but doesn't have a dog in the fight.
Now I see why he was always in the background and quite.
Hes honest tho,
but with a haters under-tone.
Dj Yella in marching band??? Ice Cube lived on the suburbs, Dr. Dre in glamorous outfits in '84. These guys aren't gangstas!! We were tricked.
That’s Hollywood for you. Nothing is real. It’s all entertainment.
Crazy to think that an under 18s club led to NWA, Dre, death row and more
"Turn off the lights" and "Rapped in Romance" are so good!
The most important question raised in the history of music: 'Whose idea was it to wear the outfits?'
Vlad u need to put more yella up plz !!! It's good to learn about the history
Only Eazy And Ren were what they claimed to be for the most part yeah.
Yella is part of 5150 nation, that's what's up
Wow, this was a cool interview
this full interview need to be on the podcast vlad
E We call him Yella, he is the best
He rocks the house on the DMX
When he's on the beatbox, he cannot miss
So listen to the beat, as he rocks like this...
It's funny bc Cube/Dre acted like they hated Jerry Heller. Yet, I saw a interview where Heller reveals he's 'real close to this very day' w/ Cube's mom. Heller kept mentioning that 'O'shea' aka Cube actually 'grew up in San Fernando Valley + attended Taft High School (valley rich kids).»»before I get called a hater, let me point out Cubes lyrics»»'just cause I'm from the CPR punk police are afraid of me' (f the police 1988)..'I'm that fool from SOUTH CENTRAL' (u kno how we do it 1993) FAKE THUGS
I think a Wu-Tang movie would also be a huge seller, because of all the different types of rappers in the group.
Jason Ross not even close to this tho
hell yeah it will be..
+ridalen. it probably wont be as good but wu tang was still way better
keith cozart who is to say it won't be better? It has not even been concieved yet.Wu-tang was better. What makes this N.W.A. movie good is that there are many different characters but the Wu does too so I think it will be better or at least just as good.Listening to wu stories, they have alot of behind the scenes, mixing with Biggie,Pac ,Nas etc..It would be a helluva movie....
E Haynes - Wu-Tang was a great hip hop group and had a hell of a run, but they aren't iconic figures like NWA. Maybe on some straight to video in a documentary style would work for Wu members, but a full movie? If anyone of Wu gets a movie, it'll probably center around ODB, who was the most univerally memorable of the crew and had a life crazy enough to carry a movie.
Yella was the fun one of NWA
Why would you end the footage like this Vlad?
It’s great hearing him break down what happened back then
Imagine Dr. Dre & Dj Yella performing as a duo in those black leather Run DMC outfits.
Got them Beats headphones on. you know it
They had that Roaches record, an answer Rumors...
Yo... The movie was good. They made MC Ren look like a lame tho and Dre was acting a little too hard for me. Cube was the nigga just like back in the day. The movie skipped over a lot but it was still good. But I still think Dre is overrated compared to other legendary producers. IMO
Jay TheJet my opinion i think they should never put that movie out ..
***** true that...
***** no classic cut that out
How is Dre overrated? He is mainly a producer and is worth well over 500 mil and has produced for and/or introduced some of the biggest rap acts of the last 25 years lol
This Dr Dre is overrated nonsense has to go lol. The man has repeatedly produced albums that are stamps in hip hop history.
Well, Lonzo was all about that R&B Slow Jam shit.
Great interview
Great insight
The chilled out nwa member
Yella is so awesome
awesome egyptian lover shout out.
So did Yella actually play the drums on "2 Hard Muthas"? Not credited for drums on the album.
Yes, he did.
World Class Wreckin Crew Dr. Dre and N.W.A. Dr. Dre are like...two completely different people. Cracks me up looking at pictures of the OLD old Dre, the one nobody knows about. Or remembers, I guess. The eighties, man.
justin williams - In the movie it was really glossed over and made to look like Lonzo forced them to wear those outfits and make R&B records.
justin williams - Seems foreign if you are young, but if you're over 35, you can remember. WCWC was a hot group in the mid 80s, they had several tracks that got a lot of bump.
Nate TheDaddy if your from Cali the Wrecking Crew was the ish, we had dances when I was in Jr. High school, that's all they would play in the clubs and a guy named Egyptian Lover, who was one of the first pioneers of LA Hip Hop, he could rap and make beats and DJ.
***** It's dope to learn about the history of Dre and Yella. Back when I was in 5th grade I thought Chronic 2001 was Dre's debut album. I didn't know anything about anything haha so being enlightened about the culture and the music of that culture is great.
Nate TheDaddy I haven't seen the movie yet, but it's excellent to know the history of the OGs. I hope the film is pretty accurate--the trailers don't even showcase Ren or Yella as impactful members of the group--but i imagine the Wreckin Cru was mad dope back in the 80s. The scene was more colorful then...Bambaata and Kool Herc wore some stuff man, but it didn't take away from the music.
What a cool dude
Hope he's doing well and is still happily married.
see no Run Dmc no N.W.A...
I remember seeing NWA in St. Louis when they first came out and Cube wanted to mess around with my friend's older sister, but she said he was too young. He was like 18 at the time...
moefromscene - lol, bet she wants that moment back
Nate TheDaddy I bet she do too...
Your friends older sister lame ass fuck
HAHAHAHA Vlad: Who's idea was it to wear them shinny suits Dj Yella: It wasn't my idea. I think it was his idea lol
SuperKaoticone - That was standard "I'm a star" attire back then. Kinda like how now young folks excuse these rappers wearing skirts with the excuse of "they got money" for everything. Same shit, and they're ashamed of it, that's why it was left out.
true
Yella is one funny dude.
It’s TYME for the real NWA movie , can we get the truth about shit , like this interview?
yellas clothing line fifty150 is dope i got a couple shirts
I think it funny how everyone gets hung up on the clothes. Look at prince and MJ, even Eddie. Rick James bitches...
Yeah. And they never claimed to be gangstas.
they should've stuck w the electro and a lot of negativity could've been avoided in the end.

Hollywood gonna see that theres money in these films! I wanna see a Mac Dre film. Nas film. I agree with the Wu Tang movie but, like some of u are saying.. DJ Yella and MC Ren were kinda left out of the film and the film was over 2 hours! So imagine Wu Tang has a lot of members so their stories would be kinda left out as well! But i hope to see more of these films documenting the lives of legends that people know nothing about!
good point "know nothing about" which will make people swear they know everything once the film releases
😂
I wish Dr. Dre and Ice Cube put the song *Real Muthaphuckkin G's* in the Straight Outta Compton movie
