  • A long anticipated journey to the amazing islands of Haida Gwaii off the British Columbia Coast.
This is the follow up video to 'Pacific Northwest' - • Pacific Northwest - pa...
3 weeks exploring the unique landscape and culture of one of Canada's best kept secrets. A rich marine biosphere surrounds an archipelago of primal forests and old growth trees. Haida Gwaii offers adventures on the land and sea and includes the UNESCO World Heritage Site of 'Sgang Gwaay'. The Haida people oversee these sensitive historical sites through the 'Watchmen' program that promotes respect and understanding of their ancestral heritage. There are 90 miles or 140 km of paved roads on the two main islands, referred to as Graham in the north and Moresby in the south. A local ferry connects these two main islands. Additionally, a network of forest service roads access more remote sectors. Arts and culture figure prominently in Haida life and the wonderful, Museum of Haida Culture in Skidegate, devotes itself to sharing this deep well of history and creativity. Gwaii Haanas is the National Park and marine conservation area in the southern third of the islands and is particularly noteworthy. In 1985, a coalition led by Haida elders & protesters at Windy Bay mandated an end to clear cut logging practices on Haida Gwaii and helped establish the Gwaii Haanas National Park and protection for their cultural sites. I visited Gwaii Haanas on a 4 day/3 night guided trip with Moresby Expeditions, which proved to be an awesome way to see the islands and visit the 5 significant watchmen sites, one of which 'Sgung Gawky' is a UNESCO world Heritage site. Many great hiking trails exist, including the Sleeping Beauty trail, Anvil trail, Golden Spruce trail, Rose Spit, Moresby Mountain & Pseuda trails to name a few. Haida Gwaii is accessible by ferry from Prince Rupert on the BC mainland or by plane into either Masset or Sandspit airports.
Mains towns include Masset, Port Clements, Tlell, Skidegate, Daajing Giids & Sandspit.
The highest point on Haida Gwaii is Moresby Mountain.

Wow! What a RUclips find. Excellent commentary and videography. It is doubtful I will have the opportunity to visit this place at my age so this video is very much appreciated.

I found this video not logged into RUclips on the smart tv so tried searching you from my RUclips account with my iPhon and it goes to Rivers and Roads. So I searched with the name of the Haida Islands video and found your Channel. It’s a good video and the self sufficiency advice is good although not required it can enhance a stay. I visited in 2023 and took my bike and was glad to have that added mobility. I was even asked where I rented the bike . I liked the Mount Moresby shots. Some of it looks recently glaciated. And I like your postcard references

Thank you for your comments and feedback. Searching RUclips and finding my channel is tricky as Im a small fish in a saturated ocean of media. Though I will keep plugging away and hope that in time the searching becomes a little easier. Glad you had a wonderful experience on Haida Gwaii, it is certainly a very special place.

Largely promotional. In the states, HG has a reputation of being a logged-out stumpland.
