Want to sell your hand crafted items but not sure on the rules surrounding licenced fabrics? Keep yourself and your craft business safe with our guide.
You're so welcome 😊. The rules in the US are a bit different in the UK. I'm afraid it's not the area in which I have done the majority of my research. However, both referenced cases are from the USA as we don't have any examples in the UK.
Thank you! This was very helpful :) I wish to make my own fabric, say from animes, if I drew/designed characters or elements from those shows, does that fall under copyright? It's just I'd love to make some seriously lacking bags or even clothes from my favourite animes and sell them but first I'd love to make them for myself :P
If a character can be recognised from your image then it's still the property of the original owner. likewise if you drew a character and wanted to sell something made from the fabric then you wouldn't be able to use any associated names etc. Hope that helps.
I’m illustrating a book about crafts throughout the world - I have to work from pictures - I’m wondering how I find out if using a photo of brocade fabric in this book is a copyright issue ? Thank you so much for any information you have
I would recommend using the Google "search image" tool. Go onto the main google search engine. Click the little multi colour camera icon on the right hand side of the search box to "search by image" then upload the picture in question. This will show you the earliest example of that image online and you should be able to see who owns the image.
Is this completely true? I was told by other bow makers that if reported for having character stock it would be taken and you'd be presented with a fine. I haven't used characters in approximately 2 years because of this. 😔
Hi Naomi Vaughan, the problem is that there is a lot of conflicting information. As I said in the video, I was previously if the opinion that character fabrics can't be used. however having done the research myself and talking to other industry professionals I can confirm that this video is factually accurate. Lots of crafters who do not understand the rules fully assume what what they are told by fabric producers is true when they say it cannot be used for commercial purposes. This means that some makers would rather not research it and choose to steer clear. That is entirely their choice. If you would like further clarification then please feel free to contact me through our Facebook page and I would be happy to provide you with more information.
Really appreciate your research!
Glad it was helpful!
It says (In the UK) what about in the US? And thanks very much for your research and information!
