honestly, I'd be interested in reading fanfic with a well designed and talked about the ship but I would love to see this thing in a fight where you take every aspect of the ship and talk about them and there abilities
This video brings back memories of that game. The Winged Defender was my favorite Romulan ship, the D-18 Gull for the Klingons, the Federation Andor class, and the Orion Wanderer blockade runner (I called my blockade runner the Tombstone expecting it to die in my gaming group's massive battle and it was only one of two ships to survive).
Definitely one of the best ship designs in all of Star Trek. The fine folks at FASA really knocked it out of the park here, and your alterations really help sell it as a product of the Motion Picture era. I could easily envision these vessels as the pride of the Romulan fleet at the time, accompanied by retrofitted TOS Gallant Wings and Stormbirds (lest we forget the short-lived alliance and technology exchange they once had with the Klingons), Whitewinds and S-11 Birds of Prey (because no official retcons will ever sway me from my headcanon that the "Klingon" BoP was originally a Romulan ship).
This is probably the best version of the defender I've seen. Not my favorite Romulan ship, but I can see why everyone else loves it Definitely deserves more screen time.
I must have wrote too many comments already about this, but I love how FASA developed a whole Romulan TMP aesthetic off of the ST3 Bird of Prey being an original Romulan ship. IMO, this, the Bright One, and White Wind is a lot more compelling than what a lot of Trek games do - basically just bigger versions of the TOS Bird of Prey with more paneling details. Really amazing model. I actually 3D-printed a simpler model of this in stainless steel on Shapeways, but may have to update it!
Thrawn: *Look up from a tablet* “Vanto, Faro? You two Take This one.” Vanto: “You sure?” Thrawn: “Quite so. This vessel is more than obvious enough. My talents would be wasted re-explaining what it says so well on its own.” Faro: *Whispered* “He must be busy. He loves breaking down ships. Artistically as well as physically. Do you know what he’s working on?” Thrawn: “Victory... and sacrifice.”
I've been a Star Trek fan since the original series first aired on NBC. When FASA first got the Star Trek license in the 80's I became a member and bought all their ship recognition manuals. The 'Winged Defender' was my favorite when playing Romulan. We would get together in high school and play the table top game. My friends Hated! Me whenever I played this ship lol. It could punch up extremely well.
if those had been used as the copy&paste ships in the final Picard episode... that would have been a preferrable design to the grey plane looking ones and it sort of seems to fit the same role (small crew, big pew and nothing else)
I liked this ship, but my favorite FASA Romulan design was always the Whitewind. Was pretty stoked when I realized the Valdore was essentially the Whitewind design. 😎
It was also supposed to be closely related to the Klingon Bird of Prey, the two ships having been developed together during the short lived Klingon-Romulan alliance as part of what would have been a coordinated fleet doctrine
With the big heat radiators, the modular weapon system, those would probably be excellent test beds for newer, tactical technology. It also looks very agile, with ECM/Cloak it could still be quite useful if it had a special weapon, not as risky as a big D´Deridex vs. enemies like the Borg.
My favorite ship was a ptolemy heavy tug with a battle pod attached. It was just as fast as a constitution class but it presented a smaller target and required less crew. The main hull had 4 phaser banks with no torpedos. But the battle pod had 8 dual torpedo tubes and 12 phaser cannons providing 360 degree fire arc. Additionally if you equiped the weapon pod with a second matter-antimatter reactor you could use industrial replicators to create your torpedos instead of lugging around a bsy full of explosives. The second reactor could double the available power than a constitution class has available. And with tugs being ubiquitous at space station, this could be a very nasty surprise deployable in moments for anyone foolish enough to attack your star port. Imagine facing off with a fast small ship that not only has 4 beam phasers, but also 12 phasor cannons, firing anywhere from 16 to 64 photon torpedos at your attack fleet. I doubt even a dederodex could stand up to that much firepower pounding it consecutively. And the batte pods are half the length of a shipping pod so it would be easy to station 2 pods at a spacestation. If 1 is bad then what is a flight of 2 of them going to do to you.
This is also my favorite Romulan design. This ship needs a fan fiction film of some kind. I imagine 3 of these decloaking near Earth releasing star bombs causing devastation....it ends with a Miranda class carrying a genesis device under attack by the Romulan fleet trying desperately to stop the Federation from seeking revenge. Breaking up in the atmosphere of Romulus it detonates.
One faction in my sci fi setting that I'm working on are essentially huge sci fi nerds(its thousands of years into the future, so our contemporary stories are mythological or classical then) and their newest generation of warships are literally named "Warbirds" and look similar to this.
Outstanding work. I hope to see her in action in the future. If things work out well, maybe we could get a 23rd century era story as a kind of cold war type series. As for fanfics, I'll be looking forward to it ^_^
But I still maintain that the cloaking devices is not about the deflection of light as that doesn’t explain the power cost. In my own head canon I believe that what a cloaking device actually does is “Descend” the ship into subspace as is implied by the original series balance of terror. That episode is based on an old submarine battleship movie (I can’t recall the name. This would also explain why sub-space fluctuations are detected when scanning for Clogged Romulan vessels this way of detection is employed in many episodes and movies.

Resurrected Starships 38.2K subscribers The awesome Romulan V-30 Winged Defender or the Romulan Valdore class should have been the much better replacement warbirds in Star Trek: Picard instead of those newer crappy Romulan ship designs that most fans [like myself] weren't very happy about (all except the refitted TOS Romulan Bird of Prey). Nice ship. Two things. 1) This IS a very cool ship design. I prefer it to what we saw in Picard and have already mentally replaced those ships with these. 2) The "There is no ship in science fiction that looks more like a raptor" comment is wrong. See Hawk's starfighter from the 80s version of Buck Rogers in the 25th Century. JAMES
Having your main armament away from the ship body serves another purpose - incoming shots will be more likely to hit central mass - these spaced items are much harder to hit and also have to be disabled separately.
This is awesome! In my Star Trek Adventures RPG Game I'll want my players in a Lokmar Class refit (Phobos) fight against the Winged Defender. Any idea how I could accomplish this visually? Is there a videogame with this models in it? I used a modded Bride Commander game for the Loknar in the past...perhaps this would work? Any tips?
I think that the claw weapons are most likely heavy disruptors judging by the aesthetic. They don't have the look of torpedo launchers and it'd be a joke if they were projectile guns. Some size specs would have been nice to give us some perspective. It looks like it could be a one-man fighter as much as a frigate or cruiser without context.
The main problem i can see with this design is that any cloaking device fitted would be renderd usless due to the high energy output lighting it up like a lightbulb.
Much to my dismay, I can see this ship taking out a Constitution class with quick hit and runs with relative ease. An opposing captain would have to be really quick on the reaction time if the ship were to have a chance to survive. What could be the max warp? I'd wager bulkier Federation ships would flee and group with allied ships who can keep pace with a impulse speed manic.

I've been thinking about warp cores recently and they just don't make any sense. The primary characteristic of anti-matter annihilation is 100% mass to energy conversion, so where is the plasma coming from? When protons and anti-protons annihilate each other you end up with photons, electrons, positrons and neutrinos, no plasma to be found here electro or otherwise. In order to get plasma out of a M/AM reaction you'd need some sort of vessel around the M/AM reaction chamber filled with gas, probably ordinary hydrogen that could then be ionised by the gamma ray photons coming from M/AM reacton.
I wondered the same thing, Perhaps it has something to do with the left over Tritium, or perhaps the reaction is tuned to be less efficient on purpose to leave some material superheated left over - but there is plenty headscratching about Star Trek - like when when a ship explodes doesn't it make a big explosion. I'm not even sure WHY there even needs to be warp plasma in the 1st place when the thing creating the displacement effect is the Dilithium and any left over reaction mass could either be used for the impulse drives of dumped to space, but for some reasons Warp Plasma does something and that something is distinct from the Dilithium - so yeah... Maybe I need a warp mechanics refresher - I think I've forgotten a lot of this stuff. Though I do recall wondering how the hell a swirl reactor is supposed to work without wasting huge amounts of Dilithium compared to a solid crystal in a frame. I really need to look this stuff up again.
Ah yes, true of the type 1 and type 2, but this is a type 2.5 that comes out in 2302. Unforunately FASA also forgot the aft phaser bank and the ventral ones on the refit Enterprise. Oh well. :D
The D'Deredex is not what it could be...we need a new cruiser. Lookat the older cruiser designs in mothballs and see which ones we can upgrade to fight the Dominion and others... This begins the V-30 Mk VI upgrade. and the V302 new design cruiser using the V-30 as a base template... The first Mk VI using an improved Cloak able to evade the Federation and the Dominion and a new Plasma torpedoe require less power to arm but equal to the first Generation quantum torpedoes. It is a rude suprise for Domiionraiders and spy ships with the enhaved sensor arrays from the larger 'chrest feathers' around teh bridge.

What a cool design, I've never seen this. Man I would have loved to see this on screen. Great work!
The Winged Defender has been around for decades, but its unfolding process has given it a new lease on life.

When I played fasa trek, this was my favorite ship bar none. I'd really like to hear some fan fiction.

I like how the winged defender plays into the transition of the TOS bird of prey with partial or sensor cloak to the full optical cloak we see in TNG.
It was also supposed to be closely related to the Klingon Bird of Prey, the two ships having been developed together during the short lived Klingon-Romulan alliance as part of what would have been a coordinated fleet doctrine
Great job. Love this ship. This and the Nova class would be terrifying. Keep up the good work.
Love that design. Nicely done explaining it. Thanks much 😁

Most likely slower than most Starfleet ships, especially while cloaked. But uncloaked at impulse it could run things down.
