I always cried and still get upset when thomas dies at Fort Wagner, he was my favorite character although this cast was stacked to the tee! But the fact he was a free and wealthy man in this era and still went to fight was awesome
Everyone? Nope. Maybe the main characters die, indeed. But not all members of the 54th Colored Volunteer Infantry Regiment of Massachussetts (or whatever the exact name was) died at Fort Wagner.
@@Briselance Near half of the regiment was lost at the battle. However Edward did actually survive though and commanded the 54th until the end of the war as he was promoted to Colonel.
The climax at Fort Wagner is so epic it’s easy to overlook how well this James Island battle is handled. The fight choreography, 20+ years since I first watched it, as one of the best I’ve seen on film.
Denzel Washington did such a tremendous job in this scene, he fought like a wild animal which is just how his character would have. Everything from his fervent pace to his expression was just perfect. No surprise there though, he was excellent in the whole film.
Smeg Wilson I caught more of a trained berserker than wild animal. Three was no wild movement to his attacks, they were all controlled...except for that stick. That was good.
With no distespect for your opinion, these men fought like soldiers, not like wild animals. The first US Coloured Companies worked hard to show that they would be as disciplined as any soldiers could be.
This scene always freaked me out when I was kid. The enemy emerging from the smoke and you can hear the sticks breaking and such to be soldier in that war at close range shoulder to shoulder must have been terrifying. This movie really captures the intensity of what combat in the civil war was like. A masterpiece of a movie and a great tribute to soldiers past.
This one or if not the best Civil War movie...the details, the scenes, the music, the ambient, it has so dramatic and melancholic scenes no other civil war movie has
Andre Braugher came to speak to my BFA class at Rutgers U in 1994. He spoke about how he learned to act for the camera from Denzel Washington during filming of Glory and what a world of difference it is from stage acting. He was a very interesting guy with a lot of cool stories. Also he got up and popped open a door to the outside of the lecture hall and fired up a cigarette. One girl said "You smoke?" He said "Sister I'll be smoking til I'm dead." Everyone loved this guy.
They cheered because they have just fired the first shots in anger and drove them away. Enjoying their newfound status as veterans..they made a rookie mistake and didn't reload instead. They won the skirmish though! Give em hell 54th!
Also there are several continuity errors. Shaw never gives the order to "fix bayonets", and we never see anyone putting bayonets on their rifles, but when the Rebs close in, the bayonets are just magically attached on. Then there is the scene at the end with Private Tripp (Denzel) fighting with the Reb soldier, the rebel's hat falls off, but then it's back on his head in the next shot.
3:24 the rebel charging w the bayonet at our character who could shoot accuretly but was slow in reloading, gets off a shot at the last second. One of the funniest death scenes, in any movie, and i'm glad the director was able to include the dash of humor in this otherwise vivid battle scene.
I found glory to be a movie where I was genuinely anxious and nervous when the main characters were in battle sequences. However historically accuracy wise, there are quite a few places it could have improved. Uniform wise, it did well.
I feel like wars back were much more painful fighting with swords and knives on rifles. Wars of today you get shot with a AR-15 or sniper and boom you’re done. No pain at all. Idk I’ve never been shot but thats how I feel about wars backthen to now.
The Confederate Soldier choking Denzel Washington is initially not wearing a hat. Then it pans to a close up of Denzel and when it switches to a wide angle the Rebel soldier has a hat on.
I guess it more to do with the tempo of the scene (as in keep it fast and intense). I think there was a scene that the Colonel shouts fix bayonets and they do. But it will slow the scene down and ruin the "tempo"
Question for you history buffs: Why did the infantry mainly use one shot-muskets in the 1860? is not a pistol with 6-8 rounds which is easier to reload+ swords a more effective way of fighting at that time. Was the due to outdated tactics or something else?
Pistols are something you could have if you could afford one or are issued one as a cavalry man or officer. The single shot rifled musket was the standard kind of weapon used in the war, though early cartridge guns made their debut in the war. Breechloaders and even some repeaters like the Henry 1860 rifle and the Spencer, among others. But the Army Ordinance was reluctant to issue them out because they thought troops would waste ammo and they would forfeit all that investment in those muskets. So when a soldier had a cartridge gun, it was usually a private purchase and usually on the Northern Side that had the industry to produce such guns. Some were issued, but by in large, they were private purchases. By the end of the war, though, there was no denying the cartridge guns were better.
I would also ad that the vast majority of Civil War combat took place far beyond pistol range. Battles that were close enough for pistols are swords were the exceptions.
Because the General in charge at Army Ordinance must have been either Dutch or a Scotsman. He hated to waste the money on bullets. 2-3 shots per minute, fair enough. FOURTEEN TO TWENTY ROUNDS A MINUTE? WTF
It's range as well. Pistols during that period were not extremely accurate -even in today's world engaging targets 50+ yards away really requires a rifle. Musket's back then were becoming extremely accurate and had effective fire up to a few hundred yards. It is one reason for the large number of casualties during these battles. The American Civil War was brutal.
Have you ever shot a percussion revolver? They are quite accurate. But even so, range and power is limited. And the army invested in all those rifled muskets, that they didn't want to lose the investment and they kept competing repeating rifles available out of the fray with some exceptions made. And they were worried that if the soldier had a lot of ammo, he would waste it, instead of making his shots count, which would cost too much money to sustain an army in the field. Breechloaders were widely used in the war, like with the cavalry. Privately purchased repeaters and a few official adoptions happened, like the Spencer for the US Cavalry, but most soldiers would be firing a rifled musket of some flavor or another.
If you put me in a line-infantry style of war like that, I probably have the guts to stand there, but not the guts to hold fire until ordered so lol. Think about it, if only the commander on the enemy side ordered "fire" 3 seconds earlier your side is totally fucked and you would have died a sorta pointless death...
First engagement, being green troops meant that they only thought of what they had just done (in some cases killed their former masters), easy to forget stuff in that moment, unless you have tried it before.
Nope. Every once in a while they did get to be used. Officers going into close combat with their men wasn't uncommon. Even generals sometimes got into the thick of fighting. Nathan Bedford Forrest is said to have killed over 30 men by the end of the war.
