  • Ah, the walkaway dress, is the vintage pattern really worth the hype? ‪@StephanieCanada‬ put out a challenge to try and find out. Today's video I will make the dress on the clock, to see how long it really takes to make this dress and if it's actually possible to start it after breakfast and walk away in it by lunch.
You may be interested to watch part 1, where I size up the pattern and prepare some of the materials for today's make: • Walkaway Dress Part 1:...

In the 1950's my mother made this dress and put pockets on it. I wanted one so she made a little dress for me too. She put donuts on one pocket and a cup on my other pocket. She called our mother/daughter dresses " day dresses". Enjoyed your videos and the donut fabric! Keep sewing you're doing great.

I don't have much experience in sewind clothes, but if this is your second dress, you're a natural! It is the best-fitting walkaway dress I have seen so far. Your adjustments really did the job. And as for the dangers of windy weather, I think this dress was meant to be worn with a petticoat, which solves the problem. And if you're not into the full 50s look, you could go for a slip under it, just to be safe. It is simply too cute to just take up space in your wardrobe

She's got a small figure, so that's more in line with 1950's sizing. This is the second video I've seen making this dress, and now I think I want one. I'd have to make it several sizes bigger, though, so I'll probably wait until I've got more progress on my diet.

It used to be a standard that ladies wore a slip or light petticoat. Always. My mom still gasped on this in the 80s. So... Maybe run up a lightweight petticoat with a frill at the hem. Modest and it will hold that dress out a bit and be super cute.

Victory. This is the best looking version of this dress I've seen on RUclips. Don't know if it's because you got to fit you really, really well or the weight of the fabric you used or what but it has the fullness and swing that is indicated in the drawn image on the pattern package. Looks really great on you.

In the 1950s, this was called a "house dress". It was made for ease of movement and worn for household chores. My mother had six of them, one for every weekday and Saturday. They were easy to run up and rather cheap to make. Saturday night was dress up for movie night, and Sunday was church day, remaining in dressier clothes for the steady stream of relatives that came by for coffee and cake or cookies (homemade, of course) and sometime staying for Sunday dinner.

@@alissagonzales735 How nice for you and your mother. There was a department store in our town which sold several of these. The woman who was in charge of the department was a French war bride and she hated working with the cheap cotton housedresses as, with her background in French fashion prior to WW II, she felt working in that department was demeaning.

@@onemercilessming1342 strange how people that don't have a penny to there name think they are too good to sell cotton day dresses. Yet my first husband who was a millionaire in the 60's from a well known family would walk around in his favorite old boots and a flannel shirt. Lucky if he didn't go into a restaurant in his water boots. Guess the ones that have $$ don't care all about fashion except when they have to.

@alissagonzales735 Have you no compassion for people whose social status fall, not from anything they've done, but the strange vicissitudes of life? Well, poor you!! I'm so sorry you feel you must denigrate everything someone else does or says or writes. The French war bride had worked with French haute couture in Paris. She was one of the people with whom I could speak French aside from the French line of my family whose gateway ancestor emigrated from France to the American colonies before the American revolution. Just so you know, working with the finest fabrics before the war must have been a difficult transition when one ends up trading in cheaply woven fabric made up into the cheapest of clothing. She was a kind and gentle soul.

I made this dress out of African fabric for my sister's wedding. I made it in about 3 hours and it came out great! Of course I did not make any French seams or other time consuming things and I have been sewing all of my life. I love your sense of humor! I watched the entire video just to listen to you! Keep sewing! It will get better and you will love it....even the hand sewing!!

@@TheMayu I started sewing when I was 13 (I'm 65 now). You will improve the more you sew. If you haven't got any, I'd recommend a good thorough Sewing Basics book. They are useful for referring to if you run into a problem.
Congratulations on the dress.....even though I've been sewing for over 50 years, I'm actually very nervous about making this dress myself, lol. Mostly because of the fitting issues everyone keeps talking about! Your dress really turned out beautifully. (And French seams!!! I'm impressed also)

Here's a tiny bit of advice about hand sewing... take your needles, scissors, etc. to your favorite well-lit corner, turn on your favorite movie, and sew away! You're just gonna give yourself a backache all hunched over at your table!

The grain and the cross grain is the only difference between parallel with the selvage and perpendicular. But it works well they will have similar stretch and finish.

Super cute dress. Fits perfectly in the neck and shoulders. On another note, why are you letting a cat dictate to you where you can sit? You own the air that animal breathes so take back your chair . The cat can nap somewhere else.

It really did come out nice. It seems like a shame not to wear it - maybe whip up some kind of light cotton half slip to wear under it? Women in the 50's wore all kinds of slips and petticoats, that's how they were OK wearing a dress like that.
Oh - and I hate hand sewing too! My thread tangles - but beeswax helps. It's still a pain, but it's a LESSER pain. ;)

Love the donuts! And cat! you look awesome in this! I bought the pattern and I keep debating on spending time making it. I really love your single fabic choice option. Everyone else I saw used two different fabrics, which looked mostly just 'okay' to me. I might try it without the neckline binding and just turn it under. I keep thinking the overall look could be a lot better with a different trim.

Your dress looks great! I wanted to share some tips that will make hand-sewing on closures suck a little less: Button hole thread, and beeswax. Button hole thread is larger, and sturdier, so it gives a strong attachment with a lot fewer stitches, just make sure you use a larger needle so threading it isn't a nightmare. Cut your thread to the length you want, then run it through some beesewax a few times, then press it with your iron between some paper or fabric scraps to melt the wax, and it will tangle a LOT less. This is true of all threads, not just button hole. I didn't learn this until I'd been sewing for 20 years, and it was a GAME CHANGER. I hope it helps you, too!

I’m impressed with your determination and your work. Just a friendly thought, it’s really not a good habit to sew over pins. It’s a risk that the needle can hit the pin and break not only the needle but your machine can be damaged or the needle fragments can hit your eye. Please stay safe and enjoy your sewing journey.

I absolutely love your fabric choice. Trust the dress. You have a great fit. Ideas of wind concerns, bike shorts. Try a petty coat underneath, after all it is designed for proper under garments. Lastly, complete the back skirt and step into it.
Please wear it out. Perfect to meet up at coffee shop or picnic in the park. Be brave!

Yeah you did it! 💥👍💗 Very cute fabric and color looks great on you! I like also the double camera effect as it's hard and not as enjoyable watching super speed. We sewists know it takes along time, sewing is up and down! Check out the costumer Lee-Am she showed Bernadette Banner the proper way to sew on hooks and eyes as she sews for the ballet too so they have to be secure. Set your hate for hand sewing before watching 😉 I call this a big win - lunch! 😀🇨🇦
