As a Savannah local, I can confirm these are all super accurate! One other thing I’d like to add is tourists just being rude to us or thinking they know more about what’s acceptable in the city when we’re trying to do things. I had the worst experience with a tourist when I was doing a photo shoot outside of the St. John the Baptist church (the beautiful church that everyone loves to come visit). If you’re local, you know this is a hot spot for photos, especially wedding pictures, so there’s usually always someone taking photos there on the weekends. I was doing a photo shoot in front of the left side of the church (away from the entrance) and a tourist came up ranting to me about how she was offended by the fact that I was taking photos in front of the church because it was offensive to her religion. I asked if she was a member of the church, but she told me she was visiting, but she spoke on behalf of the entire catholic religion. I was appalled, as I wasn’t the only one around doing a photo shoot, and I told her I was a local and I’ve taken photos in front of this church for years and I even know a few of the members that run the church and give tours, and they don’t mind at all that people are using the beautiful building as a backdrop in tons of photos. I even went on to explain to her that I was also religious and I didn’t see how it was an issue since we were being respectful to the church and others in the area while taking photos (I maybe had a crew of 3 people and 3 models and we weren’t making a bunch of noise compared to the constant hum of downtown traffic). She berated us for a few minutes, yelling at us that it wasn’t right and that she was offended. I just carried on what I was doing and apologized that I offended her, but I wasn’t doing anything illegal (or even out of the ordinary) so I was just going to get back to my shoot. After she finally left, a few other tourists that were a part of her tour group came back and apologized on behalf of her because even they thought she was being ridiculous for ridiculing us. I’m just glad that I wasn’t the only one that thought she was being extremely rude and entitled. Please don’t act like you own the city when you are just visiting and respect the locals that have been here long enough to know what’s acceptable!
OMG, she's obviously never been to the Vatican; which is swarming with people and their cameras. I love Savanah and we keep thinking about moving to the area, especially Tybee, although our family is over in Atlanta. It sure beats the weather up North.
As a lapsed catholic, this entire scenario is ridiculous. I am ‘offended’ by the tourist’s entitled (& wrong-headed) behavior. But people *will* say & do things anymore that didn’t used to happen before social media. Don’t give them any more attention (& maybe pull out the pepper spray haha)

OMG! Thank you for this!! You are sooooo accurate on everything you talked about in your video. I was glad you touch on so many important factors especially reminding tourists about speed courtesies at crosswalks and driving through the square. Savannah is our home and I’m a 4th generation native. We live downtown near our family businesses so we have work, our kids school events and others things to do and it can be a bit challenging to maneuver around tourists at times. Thanks Again!
All true! Great advice! The pedestrians walking sloooooowly across the road with no regard for traffic is infuriating! And not thanking people who let you in - rude and I hate it. I didn’t have to slow down for you… this video should be required watching for all Savannah tourists.
One of my all time favorite cities. My wife and honeymooned there in 2017. We are Ohioans but are both from small towns that still have manners and appreciate history. We appreciated that so much. Shout out to Clancy's!!!
As a 9th-generation Georgia native, I applaud your accuracy. Most misunderstandings are rooted in cultural ignorance. Ignorance can be cured by education. Manners are everything as it doesn't matter what you have, it's what you are. No matter where you travel, they don't care how you do it wherever you came from, they do it their way.
True. In NYC, unnecessary small talk at the register is rude as it holds up the line. Not knowing what you want, having lots of questions, letting kids take forever picking out what they want…all rude. Keep it moving.
I adore Savannah , I go on the off time I suppose but I love the people, the food and just the air of being there. So much to do and see and I just can’t say enough wonderful things about it. That’s what we heard! I was there Xmas time 2021, and it was always closed when we were in that area (afternoon and night). Not sure if they had staff shortages or what. Maybe next time. We loved Savannah!

I live in St Pete Fl….Savannah is my second favorite place in America….I love it. I have made many friends with locals that I hit up every time I go, and there is always something to do.
Thanks for talking about the traffic around our squares. Great it like a roundabout because that's what it is. Another thing is on main streets like Oglethorpe and Liberty, unless marked otherwise, treat it like you would a divided highway. You can make a left turn, just yield to oncoming traffic. When there's a light, roll on.
We live two hours south of Savannah. Every day-trip of weekend is great fun! It’s NOT St. Augustine, it’s NOT Charleston and definitely not Atlanta. We love NYC, LA, Chicago, Miami and much more. Savannah is a fun foodie, historic, chilled town. Take a hop on hop off then walk walk walk, don’t wait until you’re thirsty, drink lots of water even before coffee. Mark and I can tell you the best restaurants but you should find your own special spots (they’re everywhere)! One last thing, thank you Mark for all the wonderful videos. I owe you a big beer!
Thanks! I'm a new local, and I had to learn the hard way dogs were not allowed on the beach, at least not in the past. Please remind visitors to be sure they are familiar with all beach rules. Please do not leave your pet in the hot car!
The rules are posted on ALL crossovers. People still bring their dogs, go onto the dunes- even though they are fenced off, and trash the beach. I go to Tybee as often as I can (20 hr trip) and trash collect as I shell.
Thank you for the great video. I absolutely love Savannah! I have been 4 times in one year and it’s gets 6:10 better every time. I’m trying to get my friends to experience it at the same time but the hotels are quite expensive if you stay in the main area.
As a local, the line for Leopold’s is totally worth it. We will absolutely judge you if you don’t eat at real restaurants, and don’t ask us about Paula Deen’s because none of us have ever been. She’s not even from here, she just adopted us. Everyone hates the bar bikes and we are absolutely judging you and your wedding party. Most crucially, these are real streets with real cars, look before you step off the sidewalk. It’s not Disney World. And like Wolter said, don’t mosey as you cross the street. We are yielding begrudgingly but are absolutely thinking of just running you over because you’re taking a leisurely stroll through moving traffic.

30-year Savannah resident, here. It's my adopted hometown. We're so proud of our city and we love visitors! They don't call Savannah the Hostess City for nothing! For driving around our squares, just remember that it's the same as driving in a roundabout. The vehicle already in the square has the right of way. Another piece of advice... Don't be offended if locals address you as "sir" or "ma'am". In the south, it is considered polite and respectful to address strangers and elders this way, so just know that the locals are trying to show you respect, not insult you.
As a local, the only thing that bugs me from tourists is not understanding the squares and right-of-way. Think of the squares as big roundabouts with parks in the middle. If a car is "on" the square, it has right of way. All cars coming "onto" the square must yield to them. To be fair, some locals are guilty of this too, but education has to start somewhere!
I'm a pedicab driver here in savannah ga we also take people on tours and other locations and show people a really good time so what annoys me is that tourist also are very rude to us just becuase we say hi to you its us being polite it doesn't mean we want something. Also the trolleys are not the only tour company in town we are becoming extinct so please next time your in savannah please take a tour on a pedicab and watch how much fun you will have
Please understand that not everyone is used to having strangers engage them in conversation. For some people, it is unnerving and makes them uncomfortable. I've seen it from both sides. I lived in or around Savannah for 11 years. However, my family is from the north. I prefer to take the northern point of view and maintain a very large berth of personal space. I have European people in my family, and in their part of the world, engaging strangers in conversation is just not done.
I agree. Not only when driving but walking downtown. It will be entire families taking up the entire sidewalk, walking -3 mph like nobody is behind them or people don't have places to be. It's deeply inconsiderate.

When turning on the east/west median streets, such as Liberty and Oglethorpe. You don't need to wait for the cross light. You're in the process of turning. Yield to traffic, but don't sit there for the light.
When we lived down in the Savanah area, we never heard it called "Slo‐vannah". As far as driving, y'all can't drive, no matter tourist or locals. As far as the bugs go, I never had a problem w/the skeeter. I, however, was eaten alive by the no see-ums and ticks. I can't reccomend "Huey's on the River" enough. We had to move and I do miss Savannah.
I was born in Savannah and sweet tea is normal tea-it's ok to ask for un-sweetened tea (bless your heart) and many places will ask if that's what you want but being clear upfront is always appreciated----another tip for tourists is the Spanish moss has red bugs so don't let the kids grab an armload
It’s an old wives tale that chiggers live in the tree moss- they don’t. But!… there ARE mites & spiders & plenty of other little critters that bite in there, esp. on the ground stuff.
You missed the 2 most annoying things. 1) Don't stop in middle of the street because you are lost or taking pictures. 2) Tour buses are like following snails and take both lanes...at a snails pace.
I've been to Savannah many times. My wife and I are both teachers and actually lived there for an entire summer for our honeymoon. Thank you for the great content about that amazing city. Something I'd add to your list: don't think that everything worth seeing in Savannah is in the historic district.

Savannah is so culturally diverse now it ruined its own culture of hospitality. People from Newark, Chicago, SCAD ect I'm a Longshoreman at the Ocean terminal off Lathrop. I literally just had this discussion at work this morning.
Agreed it's just another 'tourist destination experience' now. Everything feels processed and like every other tourist destination now. It's an expensive replica of itself now.
Since you did Savannah, I would love to see you make it down to St. Augustine to talk about the tourists lol because if you thought Savannah tourists were bad, St. Augustine may be worse. But it’s a beautiful city and it thrives off tourism so it’s a double edge sword
I appreciate to know the local culture and learn how to keep it that way.. If I wanted other places to be like where I am from, why would I visit? Slow is why I am there, I am there to learn and share in their culture not spread mine. That is anywhere I go. Too much of the same thing is boring! Again, why I am traveling would be for the above mentioned.
The only thing missing on the list is people walking out into the middle of the road and expecting people to be able to stop on a dime like 5 feet away
Sounds like the locals don't appreciate the tourists or the dollars they bring into their community. Taking a pass on visiting this place so that I don't accidently annoy anyone living there.
We are visiting savannah in 3 weeks. I’m super excited and don’t want to be typical tourist. I was actually nervous about the tea because I just can’t do sweet tea lol and I didn’t want to offend when ordering, so I assume it’s perfectly acceptable to order unsweetened. Looking forward to seeing your beautiful city.
I live in Savannah and only drink unsweetened tea. I’ve learned that people often don’t hear the “un” part when I say “unsweetened tea” and think I’m saying “hun, tea, please.” Meaning I’m calling them honey. I’ve learned to say “unsweet tea, no sugar, please.”
He failed to mention one of the most important things about Savannah. You can walk around with a cocktail of choice. The only other city you can legally do that is New Orleans!

I’m not into the supernatural at all, so a ghost tour, in theory, sounds like something I’d avoid. BUT I did one in Edinburgh and LOVED it. In fact, we did another one the next night because we enjoyed it so much. When they involve a lot of real history and culture and imagination and atmosphere - they can be awesome (imo).

New York is just as friendly as any city I’ve been in personally, I found the people to be as nice as anyone in savannah. So let’s not generalize. Also you all are not as “friendly” as you think. I’ve lived in savannah btw and I go up there frequently and was raised in GA.

Well yes, but forgetting your manners means different things in different places. If you bring the chatty friendly mentality to places where it means 'mind you own business' you won't make the locals happy either, so it's helpful (at least to me) to know that in Savannah you're supposed to act extraverted.
The best way not to upset locals is not to go there at all perhaps? I was in Savannah a few years ago on our wedding anniversary and had a great time. Beautiful city and people.
Do one on Tahoe City CA the greater Tahoe area, Squaw Valley, Truckee. Hint: Leave your TESLA at home! Driving up from southern Ca with no chains when it’s been snowing for a week! Over Hwy. 80, leaving your trash around. Trust me. The locals HATE the tourists! You’ll have to do it in two parts. Throwing your millions around ruining the local real estate market.
I miss Savannah, lived there for four years when I was at SCAD. My wife and I went through the city briefly a few years ago on our way to St. Simons and WOW how much has changed in the last dozen years!

As a local I have to say you got the slow driving part right on the nail. There's nothing worse than trying to drive to a jobsite or home after a long day of work and someone just slow poking around.
We love Savannah. Take a stroll down Google maps before going. Very walkable, great food choices. I would drive down from Columbia just to eat at Flock to the Wok.
😂 As someone who has lived in Atlanta suburbs( raised and baptized in GA) and then savannah , they have some never calling anyone slow. Nah y’all drive slow! Also I complain about bugs and heat, I’ve lived in Vegas and it’s the humidity that kills you so I’m going to complain about the heat. Also I’m an introvert I’m not trying to talk to strangers, sorry not sorry. But the food is great.

Do you have to drive in Savannah? I wasn't really planning on getting a car. Haha I also don't know how to pump my own gas. Don't laugh... I'm a Jersey girl! We're not allowed!
it depends on where you stay! savannah is not just downtown. there is a midtown as well, which requires extra walking. there's a mall that is 20ish minutes away. and tybee beach is about 15 minutes away from downtown/midtown. there is also an app called downtowner that is 100% free but only to certain area limits downtown! :-)
Outside downtown, you need a car. Inside downtown, you can get by without one, but hotel prices are high. If you take the train in, expect to arrive at this dingy depot in the middle of nowhere late at night or early in the morning. The nicer rail station was torn down years ago to complete I 16.
If you live in GA you need a car. Don’t listen to anyone. I rarely use my car, but you will want a car just to have freedom to go out and do things when you want, you also might want to drive to places. Renting a car might get expensive in the long run.
Leopold's is definitely worth the wait. The line moves quickly. Savannahians don't eat at Lady & Sons because they know the food is slightly below average. Also, don't go to Savannah and ask a local where you can see "Forrest Gump's bench." Most people don't know that the bench was just a movie prop and has been at the Savannah History Museum since then.
They left that bench there for about 2-3 weeks after the movie came out to generate more tourism. Then it went too crazy when it was impeding traffic cause ppl were out in the street trying to get pictures of ppl sitting on it 🤦🏾♂️

I can also confirm Savannah has great vegetarian food. The restaurants here taught me that any food can be good if made well.

In the south, it is considered polite and respectful to address strangers and elders this way, so just know that the locals are trying to show you respect, not insult you.

As a local, the only thing that bugs me from tourists is not understanding the squares and right-of-way.
Think of the squares as big roundabouts with parks in the middle. If a car is "on" the square, it has right of way. All cars coming "onto" the square must yield to them.
To be fair, some locals are guilty of this too, but education has to start somewhere!
I'm a pedicab driver here in savannah ga we also take people on tours and other locations and show people a really good time so what annoys me is that tourist also are very rude to us just becuase we say hi to you its us being polite it doesn't mean we want something. Also the trolleys are not the only tour company in town we are becoming extinct so please next time your in savannah please take a tour on a pedicab and watch how much fun you will have
Please understand that not everyone is used to having strangers engage them in conversation. For some people, it is unnerving and makes them uncomfortable. I've seen it from both sides. I lived in or around Savannah for 11 years. However, my family is from the north. I prefer to take the northern point of view and maintain a very large berth of personal space. I have European people in my family, and in their part of the world, engaging strangers in conversation is just not done.

I agree. Not only when driving but walking downtown. It will be entire families taking up the entire sidewalk, walking -3 mph like nobody is behind them or people don't have places to be. It's deeply inconsiderate.

The best thing I ever did in Savannah was visit the Masonic Lodge in the old Cotton Exchange. A fine group of brothers there.

When turning on the east/west median streets, such as Liberty and Oglethorpe. You don't need to wait for the cross light. You're in the process of turning. Yield to traffic, but don't sit there for the light.
When we lived down in the Savanah area, we never heard it called "Slo‐vannah". As far as driving, y'all can't drive, no matter tourist or locals. As far as the bugs go, I never had a problem w/the skeeter. I, however, was eaten alive by the no see-ums and ticks. I can't reccomend "Huey's on the River" enough. We had to move and I do miss Savannah.
Cars actually stop for pedestrians at crosswalks here, which is really jarring for someone who lives in the Midwest where you’ll get run over!

I was born in Savannah and sweet tea is normal tea-it's ok to ask for un-sweetened tea (bless your heart) and many places will ask if that's what you want but being clear upfront is always appreciated----another tip for tourists is the Spanish moss has red bugs so don't let the kids grab an armload
It’s an old wives tale that chiggers live in the tree moss- they don’t. But!… there ARE mites & spiders & plenty of other little critters that bite in there, esp. on the ground stuff.
You missed the 2 most annoying things. 1) Don't stop in middle of the street because you are lost or taking pictures. 2) Tour buses are like following snails and take both lanes...at a snails pace.
The traffic going through downtown on Bay Street grinds my gears😂
Just becareful coming to Savannah aka C -Port during the summer! It's not all a glamorous/hostess city as they show it to be.

I've been to Savannah many times. My wife and I are both teachers and actually lived there for an entire summer for our honeymoon. Thank you for the great content about that amazing city. Something I'd add to your list: don't think that everything worth seeing in Savannah is in the historic district.

That's because they have been doing road work on Bay street since 1985. Its easier to just use the squares to move around if you know them well.
Savannah is so culturally diverse now it ruined its own culture of hospitality. People from Newark, Chicago, SCAD ect I'm a Longshoreman at the Ocean terminal off Lathrop. I literally just had this discussion at work this morning.
Agreed it's just another 'tourist destination experience' now. Everything feels processed and like every other tourist destination now. It's an expensive replica of itself now.

We are visiting savannah in 3 weeks. I’m super excited and don’t want to be typical tourist. I was actually nervous about the tea because I just can’t do sweet tea lol and I didn’t want to offend when ordering, so I assume it’s perfectly acceptable to order unsweetened. Looking forward to seeing your beautiful city.
You can totally order unsweetened tea. But make sure you order unsweet tea. Because if you just say tea it will probably be sweet by default.
I live in Savannah and only drink unsweetened tea. I’ve learned that people often don’t hear the “un” part when I say “unsweetened tea” and think I’m saying “hun, tea, please.” Meaning I’m calling them honey. I’ve learned to say “unsweet tea, no sugar, please.”

I’m not into the supernatural at all, so a ghost tour, in theory, sounds like something I’d avoid. BUT I did one in Edinburgh and LOVED it. In fact, we did another one the next night because we enjoyed it so much. When they involve a lot of real history and culture and imagination and atmosphere - they can be awesome (imo).
If you like ghost tours, Historic St. Augustine, FL has some great ones and I'm not even a tourist :p

New York is just as friendly as any city I’ve been in personally, I found the people to be as nice as anyone in savannah. So let’s not generalize. Also you all are not as “friendly” as you think. I’ve lived in savannah btw and I go up there frequently and was raised in GA.

Well yes, but forgetting your manners means different things in different places. If you bring the chatty friendly mentality to places where it means 'mind you own business' you won't make the locals happy either, so it's helpful (at least to me) to know that in Savannah you're supposed to act extraverted.

The best way not to upset locals is not to go there at all perhaps? I was in Savannah a few years ago on our wedding anniversary and had a great time. Beautiful city and people.

Do one on Tahoe City CA the greater Tahoe area, Squaw Valley, Truckee. Hint: Leave your TESLA at home! Driving up from southern Ca with no chains when it’s been snowing for a week! Over Hwy. 80, leaving your trash around. Trust me. The locals HATE the tourists! You’ll have to do it in two parts. Throwing your millions around ruining the local real estate market.

I miss Savannah, lived there for four years when I was at SCAD. My wife and I went through the city briefly a few years ago on our way to St. Simons and WOW how much has changed in the last dozen years!
Overrated and miserbly hot in summer. Charleston is 100% better and only 2 hours away.

We love Savannah. Take a stroll down Google maps before going. Very walkable, great food choices. I would drive down from Columbia just to eat at Flock to the Wok.

Also I complain about bugs and heat, I’ve lived in Vegas and it’s the humidity that kills you so I’m going to complain about the heat. it depends on where you stay! savannah is not just downtown. there is a midtown as well, which requires extra walking. there's a mall that is 20ish minutes away. and tybee beach is about 15 minutes away from downtown/midtown. there is also an app called downtowner that is 100% free but only to certain area limits downtown! :-)

Outside downtown, you need a car. Inside downtown, you can get by without one, but hotel prices are high. If you take the train in, expect to arrive at this dingy depot in the middle of nowhere late at night or early in the morning. The nicer rail station was torn down years ago to complete I 16.
If you live in GA you need a car. Don’t listen to anyone. I rarely use my car, but you will want a car just to have freedom to go out and do things when you want, you also might want to drive to places. Renting a car might get expensive in the long run.

Leopold's is definitely worth the wait. The line moves quickly. Savannahians don't eat at Lady & Sons because they know the food is slightly below average. Also, don't go to Savannah and ask a local where you can see "Forrest Gump's bench." Most people don't know that the bench was just a movie prop and has been at the Savannah History Museum since then.
100%.... Though I would argue with Lady & Son's being only SLIGHTLY below average...
Agreed, but you can always tell them the name of the square where it was filmed! (Chippewa Square for those that don't know.)
They left that bench there for about 2-3 weeks after the movie came out to generate more tourism. Then it went too crazy when it was impeding traffic cause ppl were out in the street trying to get pictures of ppl sitting on it 🤦🏾♂️
