Since you’re reviewing the 11-inch, I assume that’s what the “nobody was complaining about the iPad’s weight” comments were about. But I’m going to interject here, because the weight reduction is an absolute 100% game changer for the 13-inch iPad Pro. I had the 12.9 M1 model because the 11-inch had the terrible LCD screen (not saying it was a terrible screen, just saying all LCD in general is bad to have on a premium device), but the weight absolutely made it a bad tablet. For that reason I was going to switch back to 11-inch once that got a good screen too, but then I saw the weight reduction in the keynote and finally went to a store to get a feel for both devices and instantly went 13-inch. Now you get the benefits of the big screen while still getting a tablet device that’s a pleasure to hold. This is everything the device needed.

I keep hearing RUclipsr’s say, ‘Nobody wanted the iPad to be thinner and lighter’ - which does cause me to wonder whether you actually use the thing as a productivity device. I use my 13” for real work - at home, at the office, and on the go and the 2018 absolutely needed to be lighter. You try standing in a work setting taking notes, etc. all day long. It gets heavy quickly. The M4 13” is a significant improvement. It’s almost comically light. And the difference that makes is notable and really welcome.
What I do get is that prosumers, gamers, and content consumers won’t necessarily feel the benefit. But I’d argue that’s because this device isn’t targeted at you. Get the Air instead and save your money.

I upgraded from the M1 11" I didn't get the 12.9" before because it was just a tad too heavy to hold for hours compared to the 11". While it's not a lot, the little changes pushed me to the 13" and I'm very happy with the extra screen size, larger magic keyboard and it's not too heavy to use as a tablet.

  • @gerardrosales

I think you said it best at the beginning of the video. For quite some time now, we've already reached the necessary performance to run the most basic and repetitive mundane tasks. This is the reason why even after being 6 years old, the iPad Pro 2018 with an A12X chip is STILL being compared to the iPads of today. That iPad release was just so good and stood the test of time. Any performance upgrade we get moving forward will have no problem to accommodate the basic tasks we just mentioned, but will just be for future proofing and improving other components of the SoC such as more memory, improved NPU performance, and dedicated chips for encode/decode.
Of course, there's also room for performance improvements not directly associated with the chip, but rather concerning thermals. Using your example, I play Genshin Impact as well on my iPhone 15 Pro Max, but all that power has to throttle simple due to the iPhone's poor thermal management compared to the competition. Even playing with just Medium Graphics with MetalFX enabled and Motion Blur off, I still experience the occasional frame drops even if I lock the FPS to 60.
Hopefully, Apple will continue to invest in better thermal management moving forward.

I work in technology and using iPad for any day-to-day work is a "pain". Basic things like file manipulation, working with PDFs, slides, presentations, videoconferencing I keep running into issues that are not even thought of in the real PC. Great video!! It helped us decide whether or not to upgrade my wife’s old iPad Air 2. She says she is going to keep using it until it breaks and save the thousand dollars plus tax.
I would like to ‘like’ an iPad, but after using my wife’s, even for simple things like helping her shop online, I much rather use even my old 2013 Mac laptop-hands down. iOS just can’t compete with the...I suppose ‘use-ability’…full featured power.. something like that, of a regular OS-at least for me. I don’t need a pencil, or have to stand up to use a computer device. My wife and I are two old retired dogs-she sits in her comfy chair reading, doing just a few favorite games, and for email. I, on the other hand, much prefer to sit at my desk in the study using a laptop, I have an iPad mini with a strap handle on the back for when I am lying down in bed reading ebooks, browsing RUclips and simple things like that. I am just waiting for September to finally upgrade my laptop (at considerable cost, unfortunately) when the M4 is going to be released. Also, I really need to upgrade my iPhone 6 Plus, but it still works for messaging and as telephone, which are my main needs. But more and more apps are not able to work on it, so I do need to upgrade that device.

If I need to do some work in apps like Xcode, Logic, Figma, etc. I will switch over to my My 15" MacBook Air M2. Other times I just feel like using my MacBook instead and I will use it when I feel like it. I also don't upgrade things until they aren't meeting my needs, it doesn't matter much outside of those cases. Even if something is markedly better, if what I have meets my needs, it's not getting upgraded.

But I love the iPad and I want the new one so much. I think it’s time for me to switch to 13” one because it’s lighter than ever. But the price tag is so high that I need another motivation : if it could totally replace my Mac (run Mac applications). Let’s wait for the WWDC and see what iPad OS 18 will be. The specs of the ipad pro are like a car with amazing zero to 60 but its illegal to take it on the freeway (it cannot use real mac OS version of apps)
just like the material they use for their cables that wear out super fast, they intentionally design their products to look grimy and be difficult to clean
ipad will NEVER get desktop parity, it will only ever have worse versions of the same software where you can "start" on the ipad but you're meant to transition your files to the laptop then the desktop, they expect you to buy 3 computers to do one task AND to re-buy them often
its been apples motive to make them easy to break, such as dust getting into the hinge and that connector breaking easily from simply opening up the macbook, then they charge you through the nose for basic repair that should be $3 or free, but instead they charge 80% of the original purchase price, which pushes you towards "well why not just get the new one"
and then you're back on their price ladder
"oh the basic apple thing is $599, but it has terrible ram and tiny storage
but for $600 more i can upgrade both
    but i also want wifi...so another $200
and they change the size of it slightly,.....and the pen doesnt work bc they moved the magnets slightly....
    rebuy the pen for $150
    rebuy the keyboard for $350
    and now you're at $1700
but wait....if i get the PRO version i get a better screen.....
so now you're back at the start with the basic apple pro thing @ $1,599 but it has terrible ram and tiny storage
    etc etc
and your initial "its only a $599" device
    is suddenly $2,700"
and you just went in bc a spec of dust got into the thing and broke it but "its not covered under the expensive apple care"
    and even if you're ok w a $2,700 ipad
    you still need the macbook
    and the desktop
bc the ipad os is trash
apple has always been like this for decades
its a scam company that hates its customers

Cant Do any coding ..a lot of the productive apps remove their full computer functions etc... there is no point of ipad pro it doesnt do anythibg more than what ipad air does so whats the point. I am probably in a minority here, but yeah, iPad does need to get lighter. Why? Because of the Magic Keyboard. The lighter the iPad, the lighter the base of magic keyboard can get. I bought this iPad Pro M4 with Magic Keyboard. It’s interesting device, I like it, but it still feels like a brick when I am taking it with me. Because the Magic Keyboard has to be heavy in order for it to not tip over when iPad is connected. So this is still an issue.

Hey Jimmy. First time I’ve come across your channel, and your straight-forward, common-sense analysis earned an easy subscription from me.
I also wanted to say that I think most reviewers have missed one important benefit to the new iPad Pro that even the average iPad user should at least consider. Virtually everyone with a smart phone uses it for photography, and any relatively recent iPhone can shoot photos in HDR (as well as display them in HDR on the phone). But until the arrival of this new iPad Pro and its spectacular OLED display, there has been no portable device that could accurately display photos exactly as they were captured by the phone. Try to display HDR photos on a pre-2021 iPad Pro, with its standard LED display, and you will get a very flat and dull SDR image, not at all indicative of how the actual photo came out. And even on the more recent, 2021-2023 iPad Pros with mini-LED displays and HDR capability, they are limited to a maximum of 600 nits, which while better, still can’t give you an accurate replication of what the phone captured.
So at least for me, the new iPad Pro is worth it for the screen alone. When I travel, I always take my iPad with me and use it at the end of each day to review the photos I’ve taken to see what I actually captured. You just can’t really tell how a photo really came out by looking at the small phone screen, even when that screen supports HDR. And I don’t think most people even realize they are capturing much better quality photos than they’re actually seeing when they view them afterward on a non-HDR laptop or older iPad. In fact, I noticed that many new iPhone 15 Pro users went online to complain after its release that their photos looked flat and dim. I suspect much of that disappointment is due to viewing the pictures on screens that cannot display them accurately.
It seems such a waste to take photos with a phone camera that is capable of very high dynamic range, but then never see those photos on anything that can show you what you actually captured. This new iPad Pro is a game changer in that regard, if only people were made aware of it.

However, I really would love to have that display… ;) I am not sure if I will upgrade or not - for now I am waiting to see if iPadOS brings any new features that requires the M4.

I’ve used tablets as my primary computers since 2018. That was when I bought a Samsung Galaxy Book on Ebay. It was a full-powered Windows tablet with an OLED screen, two USB-C ports, and a keyboard case that came with it. I’d be using it today if Microsoft would have allowed me to install Windows 11 on it. I finally settled on the iPad Pro and just picked up the 13” M4 model. The previous model did most of what I wanted, but the newest version will be much more future proof because of the processor. And I get to use an OLED screen again - only much improved over what was on the Samsung. At the moment, the only direct improvement I notice in the software is that Microsoft Word runs more smoothly on it than it did on my older iPad Pro.

Interestingly, after watching several reviews of the iPad Pro, it appears that the device is tailored exclusively for niche markets like photo editors, musicians, and those whose profession involves drawing. It's absolutely astonishing that many RUclipsrs consider 'professionals' to be exclusively those who edit videos, draw, or create music. On the contrary, there are majority of professionals who would like to use an ipad, and professional applications for them consist of mainly the full versions of MS Office, seamless file management systems, and the complete version of Outlook.

I am trading in my Mac mini M2 Pro for credit on my 11 inch M4. I barely need the power of the Mac, and I much prefer the iPad for my computing. Even video editing. I have a screen, trackpad, and monitor, so I won’t be getting the Magic Keyboard (yet). When I want to get things done, I will just use stage manager with my display.

Even if I didn’t do photo editing (and wanting to learn video) I still don’t think I’d want the iPad as my only computer
That’s because I feel like many important webpages will probably function kind of janky on it.
Like the webpages I have to use to apply to nursing school , pay bills, etc.
If those pages operate on an iPad anything like they do on my phone. For me that’s not an enjoyable experience.
Plus all the apps that are half baked or look odd like Instagram. Or don’t some sites like RUclips force you to use the app and not let you use the website at all?
When I get an iPad Pro I’m more excited to use it for editing in Lightroom than dealing with webpages that aren’t set up for it correctly.
(This will be my first iPad so I’m very excited. My only experience with one is renting an old one from my school)

I upgraded from 2018 ipad pro 11 to m4 ipad pro 13 and it so far has been great. The additional layers from RAM is great, and I didn't expect to like the thinness and the screen as much as I do. I also really love the squeeze, hover, and rotate support that I didn't have before. I was contemplating on the price tag for a while, but for how much I use it, I went ahead with the purchase and I am so glad I did. Also, the 13" Ipad has a better aspect ratio in my opinion for drawing. I noticed at first I was doing the same thing where I was zooming in a bit on the 11 in to do clean line art but after a bit it definitely was nicer on the larger screen. I was worried about the size being unwieldy or too heavy, but so far that has not been a problem.

iPad OS was released in 2019...thenin 2020, Mac transitioned to arm for 2 years. Since 2022, some pro apps STARTED porting to iPads and still developing. In 10 years time, iPad OS will have most capabilities of Mac OS including less cut down versions of pro apps...and with on device secured AI, those apps will be better. iPad is the future esp most kids and high school students now are familiar with phones...and no piracy allowed like there is Netflix app in iPad but not in Macs...and more and more will develop apps that are worse in website version.
Pencil pro is also awesome with those gestures, sure developers will make use of it in coming years.

I'm a sales rep and it really works well for my job with a few nagging irritations. So Jimmy, what do you think is going to happen at WWDC? Are they finally going to do the iPad (and its users) right and give us a more robust, feature rich OS or is it just going to be another year of trickle in features like maybe some new emojis that no one cares about?

    • @JimmyTriesWorld
      @JimmyTriesWorld  4 месяца назад +1

Think WWDC is going to trickle in a few more features and focus more on AI features. The iPad event seemed like the first time they directly mentioned AI so expecting some stuff on that too. The current Apple is very good at segmenting their product and making sure their product categories don’t cannibalize each other. Even if Apple made iPad OS close to feature rich as Mac OS, developers still need to have an iPad OS version of the apps and tools you want to use, so I think there would still be some time before power users would switch. But that’s just a theory 😅.

I traded in both my Macbook Pro M1 and a 2020 iPad Pro for an 11-inch 512GB M4. Two weeks ago I gave it a shot to do everything on my iPad (from video editing on Lumafusion, Logic Pro mixing, photo edits on Photomator and Affinity to everyday mundane tasks like watching content, e-mails, etc.), not really surprisingly but, even with slight performance hiccups, my 2020 iPad Pro did everything. I just love the usage versatility of the device, and the reality is that on this day and age, most tech companies are releasing more compact products like smaller full frame cameras, more content creators are using their phone cameras to make their videos, etc. This doesn’t mean that laptops and computers are getting irrelevant but mobile computing seems now like an alternative option for users.

The weight saving from going from 2 devices to this single is great for travel but I will add I have the m1 iMac at home for full computing os. The combo of iMac at home and m4 13 inch looks to be my perfect combo. Great video, let’s all hope the soft wear and os catches up with the iPads potential! Besides not having a full fledged 3D modelling/animation suite like Maya or Blender, I am curious to what else users want? The files app can pretty much do what the finder does, just in a different way. Affinity photo / Designer are amazing alternatives to photoshop and illustrator, With Luma Fusion, Resolve and Final Cut Pro doing a good job on the video editing front. I am certain if one takes the time to delve into what is on offer, they can use the iPad as a great computer replacement.

The biggest advantage iPads have over any Mac is convenience. It is the ultraportable device that can literally be taken with you everywhere inside the home or outside, something you can’t do with a MacBook easily. I’m tired of hearing the iPad is supposed to be a laptop replacement when it was never intended to be. Macs have exactly the same issues as iPads. An M1 Mac is more than enough for almost everyone. Saying the M4 is overkill is no different than saying the M3 Max is overkill for Macs. 95% of people don’t need anything more than M1, whether it be iPad or Mac. Because the iPad is good enough for almost everyone’s computing needs, there’s no reason for iPads to take over the MacBook’s niche.
