  • Rick Montgomery was born in West Virginia in 1948. He was drafted into the Army in 1969 and trained as an infantryman. He served in Vietnam in 1970 with the 2nd Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment in the 101st Airborne Division in the norther part of South Vietnam. He first served with B Company early in the campaign around Fire Support Base Ripcord, but was then transferred to the battalion's headquarters company, where he became a cook. While based in the rear, he regularly visited the firebases in the field, and even served meals on Ripcord while it was under siege in July. He completed his enlistment in 1971, and spends some time at the end of the interview discussing the challenges of returning to civilian life.
