This is just the video I needed - I have 1 of those chases you describe and I thought I should insulate it. But air sealing it makes way more sense. It's pretty large, basically the size of a hula hoop, so I guess I probably have 2 hula hoops worth of air sealing to do.
I didn't even know it existed, but I bought a little thermal camera and the insights it has provided have been helpful in this 50 year old house.

So happy to hear you got an "energy ah-ha" moment in the video and are going to apply them!!! Yes, the little stuff adds up and once addressed makes a diference everywhere!!!

Very interesting. I’ve been sealing my doors and windows but the results haven’t been as impactful as I expected and this explains why

So glad you got it!!! Human beings experience comfort about 60% - 70% through radiant heat transfer...meaning by the temperature of the surrounding surfaces...so air temperature is only 1 factor. The air temperature behind the surfaces that you live is just as important as anything!

Excellent and concise video! I've watched countless videos by the big RUclipsrs on this and yours is the best. The "how to" videos can be done separately. First, it's important to emphasize the problem (and the potential opportunity for improvement) and you did that extremely well. I've been pulling back some blown-in insulation and am appalled by the gaps in our ceiling. The house is only 7 years old and passed inspection. Some inspection! 😞
I'm just waiting now for the next cool front to move through to begin my work.

Thanks so much for your encouraging comments! More content coming soon! I've never seen a home that hasn't had specific "home energy" work done that is in good shape "air sealing" wise so consider it par for the course and now you have the insight to actually do something about it. And yes, I've been in too many attics in the summer to count...you can do a better job on the work when it's a little more reasonable of a temperature up there! Best with your home!!!

You explained it so well thank you. We just remodeled our house, there is lots of holes for all the new can lights and there is gaps. This is so important for us to take care of ❤thanks

I also have a leak around the chimney where waste escapes out the roof.

Hi 👋 . My name is Shaneka. I am reaching out for help with headaches, fatigue, excessive sleeping, clay/dirt/dust “soot” widespread throughout the home and in my nose, bad smells in the attic and throughout the house. I need help. We heat and cool with mini splits but get the natural gas smells. The fire department read hydrogen sulfide. There used to be a furnace in the crawl space one technician told me and another told me it was no longer there… There is an oil smell in the basement. I need some serious help. What do you think the problem could be in this house?

So sorry we didn't respond here. I'm going to work on a video specifically about indoor air quality!!! I'll ping you when it's live.
