Yeah it looks pretty fun but I don't get the combiner ship gimmick, is it like a reward system for not getting any deaths in the earlier half of the game? Do well enough and you get to use the full ship for the rest of the playthrough?
yeah - the mechanic also has a counterpart for the bosses, interestingly. once you're past the tube stages (i.e. in the last half of the game), if a boss gets away it'll combine with the next stage's boss. it's actually possible to go up against Ultimate-Tiger if all three combine.

It recently released on Switch as part of the Arcade Archives range.. I bought it and its great fun. Really good for Caravan mode.
